Oil & Classics

I do know of a Model A that a guy bought, changed the oil from the non-detergent to detergent muilt-weight, then took it on a 1,000 mile tour. 500 miles, knock knock. Who's there? Piston slap. It was nice to be able to tell the noise was from the top of the block and not from the bottom. He drove it home if I remember correctly. (this was about 18 yrs. ago)
I personally would pull the valve cover or the oil pan and see how much sludge is in the engine. if very little I'd use the detergent oil. If a lot I'd use the non-detergent.
I don't believe in the babbit wear theory either.
  2.
I had brought this up before about the rules. At that time one of the things I mentioned was the ruling that you aren't to sell things available on the open market(short version). under that ruling, Coker Tire, tip sandblasting, eastwood, dennis carpenter, jc. taylor, and all these guys selling new tools shouldn't be there. Father Ron stated that is nice to be able to see what you you are getting in person. I agree with him. BUT, the rules state they shouldn't be there. Out of curoiusity, I looked in the program for this year and without really trying, came up with over 200 exceptions to this rule. If there are these many exceptions, what good is the rule? Why not let everyone sell anything they want to? There was one vendor in the white field, I was told, selling antique (non-auto) clocks.
Pets: in the papers to vendors, states NO PETS. Okay, we as vendors aren't allowed pets that poop in OUR spaces and we have to clean up after. Yet, People are allowed to bring their pets into the fields each day. Must be that it okay to have them if you aren't selling anything so that they poop all over the fields instead of consentrated in the owner's spot. !!I got it!! HERCO doesn't want just certain small areas fertilized. (I got it! No pets. Bring cows! They aren't pets. They're there for your food supply and fertilize larger areas. )
Handicapped carts: Stated in the rules, NO GOLF CARTS, no gas powered carts, etc. Then hows come they were renting them out to the handicapped. Last year the rule was the same an one guy was told if he so much as unloaded his off his vehicle he was OUT! Is it a case of if you are handicapped you can't bring a cart because Herco isn't getting aprox $70 (forgot the excact figure)a day for it? And what about all the bikes? Why aren't they stopped at the enterance to each of the fields and and returned to the owner when they LEAVE the field. The handicapped people have to put up with the little battery powered carts that don't go that good in the mud, and you can't hear them come up from behind.
Like I said before. The rules should apply to EVERYONE!!
There. I feel better now.

[This message has been edited by novaman (edited 10-13-2000).]
  3. in the white field it was someone's portable gen. that was running long into the night, one night. My camper's gen. exhuast points out towards the aisle and is about 8 ft from it. Then gets turned off at 10PM like the rules state. Next year, it will have a stack on it, as this year the camper was one week and 1 day old when left for Hershey.
I wish Hershey would enforce ALL the rules on EVERYONE the same. I don't like the, it applies to you, you, and you and not to him, him, him and him.
  4. Please tell what the injustice was. There are good number of us on here that are judges. You may not be able to reverse the injustice but, you may be able to prevent it from happening again if we know about it.
As judges we pay for the judges breakfast before the show, volunteer our time to do the judging, pay our own travel expenses and what do we get from all this. A little chip to go on a plaque that hangs on our wall. We are human and do make mistakes. I think i can speak for most judges, that we would like to know when we do make mistakes so we don't make them again. So you aren't "wasting" your time if we learn from this and can prevent it from happening again.
Hershey I feel is one of the hardest placest to judge. Yes, someone is going to say that Hershey has the better cars attend the show. I've got to say only sometimes but that's another story. What makes it so hard is the fact there are sooooo many people there it is hard to move around the cars. While judging I've heard people say "they're judging the car", yet stand in the way. you ask them to move and they'll backup one step. I judge chassis a lot, I've got to be very careful not to have someone trip over me or step on my hand, if I had put it on the ground. The people who aren't watching where they are going and bump me act like I committed a crime by being in their way.
Sorry about rambling on. Why don't you join us for judging school sometime? You don't have to become a judge just because you went to a judging school.
Please again, let us know what the problem was. I'd like to know what I did wrong, if it was something I did.
  5. If your VW isn't "stock", and the local club judges using the national standards, anything that you couldn't get from VW for that year VW, will have points taken off. Most local show don't use the national standards. I'm just fore warning you in case they do happen to use the national standards what to expect. There are also some local show that use the everyone takes home an award theory. The local show just have a wide verity of judging take place. I hope this doesn't keep you from going. Go, have a good time, personally just going to get an awards isn't what the old car hobby is about. It's the about getting together an talking about old cars, giving each other restoration tips, etc.
  6. As far as I know it has not been changed yet although there is discussion about changing it. I hope they do. I have a car waiting for the class.
  7. Why don't you register and become a regular member of the discussion fourm? You'll enjoy it.
  8. Hey Thomas, your picture made a nice dart board, Thanks. Really, it was nice to have your pictureand pictures of the others whose couldn't attend. It's nice to have a face to go with our fellow DFer's names.
[This message has been edited by novaman (edited 10-09-2000).]
  9. Salg, you can add me to that list.
From what I understand, $40 of each flea market space goes to HERCO. Times that by the number of spaces!!!!!!
The number of times the Herco poeple will out right lie to you!!
gotta stop and take something for high bloodpressure now.

  10. What we need is for Peter to rig the buy/sell forum where you have to answer: buy /sell , then you can enter what it is for the title. for the description part, it won't let you post it unles you fill in a form with price, State, name, email, phone, etc. (the SalG Form). Either that or get and aduio message they have to listen to while posting topic. Someone like the "Nanny" outta get their attention.

    Planitary Drive?

if the drive you are talking about is anything like I think it may be, your every day car if it's an automatic transmission has one. By the way, it's planetary. think of the gears as our solar system. in the middle you have the Sun gear (actual name). this gear as teeth that mesh with what is called pinion gears. these gears are sandwiched between the sun gear and a outer ring gear. now it is a case of are you turning the sun gear which turns the ring gear or vise verse. The number of teeth on the sun gear, pinion gear and ring gear wil give you your gear ratio. This is all hard to try to explain in text. Email me if you still don't understand. Don't worry Father Ron, I'll end up getting anymore info posted for others, if more explaination is needed.
  12. I'm looking at a copy of American car ID numbers 1950-59 as I post this. If you look at your VIN on your door post the first letter is engine code, the next number should be a "7" for 1957.
the engine codes are. C=292 cu.in w/ 2BBL carb 212HP & manual trans., D=312 cu.in. w/ 4BBL. carb 245HP Auto/OD trans., E=312 cu.in. w/ 2 4BBL.carbs 270HP any trans.,and F=312 cu.in. w/SC 300HP any trans.

    Daily drivers?

    I second TodFitch's reply.
  14. Beware of SalG!! It would be nice to know what kind of interior, NOS and other parts you are looking for.
  15. Thank you Rick for hosting the DFer's at you restoration shop during the holy week of Hershey. I think everyone has an enjoyable time.
  16. one reason for quick judging. We finally were not short of judges at Hershey for a change.
  17. The results are not posted on this website. As was said, you'll hear from headquarters if you won anything. Yess, it'd be nice to have results posted here but the behind the scenes work can't be done quick enough for immedate results. the judging documents will still be changing hands tomorrow (monday).
  18. At Hershey, the flea market/car corral runs from Wed. thru Saturday. The car show is only Saturday. At any AACA national show the class with 60's & 70's cars start with class 27 and up ( i don't have my judges manual unpacked yet) There are always cars from the 60's and 70's in the show and in the car corral. You're a little late for this year, but plan on attending Hershey next year. Dates are Oct 10-13, show is on Sat. best way of seeing the cars is to get there about 6am and go to the east side of the stadium and watch all the cars go by you. The show field is crowded with people and between 1,500 to 2,000 cars.
Oh by the way, you better start making your motel resrevations now if you want a shot a getting a place anywhere close to the show. Otherwise you'll have an hour's drive from the closest room. I'm not kidding!!
[This message has been edited by novaman (edited 10-08-2000).]
  19. His appearance might be slightly shaved on here(see best judges breskfast ever under the general fourm)But, Father Ron does have an answer for us and I'll let him post it.
  20. Deering: I didn't catch your comment before about Yenko Chevys. The Yenkos were a Chevrolet Camaro or Nova that was delivered to Yenko for the modifications before going on to the dealer. It was a limited quanity option from Chevrolet. Now before i insert foot in mouth, I'm not positive on how AACA is handling them as I'm not invovled in judging those classes which those cars are in. (another part of judges learning more from each other over time.) I personally mess with the '62-'65 Chevy IIs.
[This message has been edited by novaman (edited 10-07-2000).]
  21. Yellow field report: They were being towed IN on tuesday afternoon. Field a a total mess for whole show.
Blue field: fine on Wed. didn't get back there later.
White field: about 1/4" to 1" thick mud on thursday dried up pretty good friday afternoon.
chocoalate field : ? didn't make it over there. the Choc. annex: soild blacktop

  22. I can't remember the figure but I think it was close to $2,000 raised for the libary. Not bad considering it was started with $100 for (i forgot his name) and $100 for Father Ron to shave thier staches. Other guy did it at the $100. Way to go Father Ron!! You made it a good fund raiser.
  23. Thomas, Were are the german girls in their bikini's. Oh, I forgot. For them to be leaning all over one of our cars they'd have to be nude so they wouldn't scratch the car with a fastner. I don't Peter wouldn't let us post a good picture like that on here. Anyway, nice car.
  24. Been there, checked it out today. Rain gear was packed two days ago. Be real, what's the chance of Hershey without some rain??

[This message has been edited by novaman (edited 10-01-2000).]
  25. If it was me looking, I'd start with any of the fields except the Chocolate or Chocolate annex. I would save them for last as they tend to have more vendors with parts for the earlier cars. I wouldn't count them out, just save for the end. Looking at a past show program the vendors your looking for will mainly be in the white field and the new Yellow and Blue fields.
You should stop at one of the striped tens as you enter a flea market field and get one of the show program book/"guide". It lists all the vendors, borken down by what they are selling (their main stuff) and also listsed by name. It will quicken your search.
