1. I did a “inspection sticker” search on this form as this has been previously discussed and below is a post I made in 2011 regarding the PA sticker locations. “I spoke to Robert Hoyt (link above)and he is extremely knowledgeable on inspections stickers. He says that 1959 was the year PA went from the passenger to the driver’s side for the sticker locations. He will be at Fall Carlisle, space F-97.”
2. This guy is the king of stickers and his instruction sheet tells you where the sticker is located. I know for 1955 they were on the passenger side lower corner in PA, also possibly in 56. I believe they moved to the driver side lower corner in 57. Give him a call maybe he will help? http://inspectionsticker.net
3. There are many morons that walk amongst us. I was called an idiot on Saturday by a family that appeared to have just crawled out of the mountains. Trailered 2 vehicles to the Swigart meet. Late afternoon I went to get the trailer ready for loading only to discover a vehicle parked 3’ from the rear door, even though there was a large parking area alongside. Had the vehicle make, color and license announced to no avail. After an hour they wandered back to leave and I asked them why they would park in a car trailer loading door. They jumped in their vehicle, drove 25’ and hollered out the window “you idiot you could have pulled straight out”. Yes I guess I could go straight and run the trailer over the double stacked railroad ties onto the highway however I would prefer to load my vehicles first that YOU prevented me from doing since YOU were blocking the trailerdoor. After they left a couple in a small pick up drove in and parked on the trailer parking area exit road. They said to me “is this a good place to park”. I said it is perfect if you want to block all 6 of these car trailers in. They responded “so you think I should move”?
4. Peter, There are many interesting conversations that take place in the hospitality room ask Wayne . Though this picture has been around for a long time that certainly is an interesting take on the amphi’s use regardless of who dreamed it up.
5. For years I messed around with pouring acid in batteries and checking the level every few months hoping not to blow up when charging. I am up to 19 batteries am glad for the sealed units. From their website: AGM Battery Technology was originally developed in 1985 for military aircraft where power, weight, safety, and reliability were vital considerations. This "next generation" technology delivers increased safety, performance, and service life over all other existing sealed battery types. AGM batteries deliver and absorb higher rates of amperage than other sealed batteries during discharging and charging. Ted, sounds like you have my kind of luck. At least you got 4 years out of it. I have had decent battery life since using battery tenders. I did get 11 years out of one.
6. I spoke to Antique Auto Battery today and according to them they do not use a Optima battery as the dimensions are larger than most car batteries of the day, plus the terminal posts are not in the same location. Optima uses a gel filled technology and their manufacture uses a AGN technology and they make batteries for military vehicles. There are manufactures who make a fake case and top for a Optima battery but it would be easy for judges to spot as it is larger and the posts are in a different location. I have bought a few of these AGN technology batteries from Antique Auto Battery and one is going on 7 years old and still has plenty of life leftand looks exactly period correct.
7. I use it to winch in and out however you need to make sure the trailer has a little tilt back on it for going out. Sometimes a little push is needed going out but once it gets starts rolling all is well. I generally just walk beside the vehicle and steer it if necessary but if the winch is located in the middle of the trailer it typically pulls straight in. Either a wireless remote (preferred) or the cord control (usually long enough) works fine.
8. I have never regretted not having a side door and with the new trailer I ordered a few years ago didn’t order a side door and the old trailer didn’t have one either. I use the trailer for a few different vehicles, some large and some small and have even hauled two small ones in it so the entire side would need to be a door. I use a wireless winch to pull them in which works for me and I would think would be cheaper and safer than trying to cut a door into a trailer not factory made for it (additional framing supports, etc).
9. If you have a battery cutoff switch check that as they can get corrosion at the contact areas which is hard to see. I spent 2 years tracking down an intermittent problem with a vehicle that would not restart after it was up to temperature. Also had another one that would make the vehicle sputter like a coil was bad.
10. This is news to me that you must count the truck weight in the overall weight as the total weight would easily be over 10K with a trailer carrying a vehicle? My enclosed trailer weighs 4,300 pounds alone. I pull with a ¾ ton Chevy pickup. I just got back yesterday from a 2,800 mile tow with a 24’ enclosed trailer with car from PA to Florida with no issues (again). As usual I did not stop at any weigh stations and most saw me drive by. Trailer is rated 10K and with car it is right at 10K. I have over 60K miles towing and have never been stopped. As per the federal DOT a private carrier must have “not for hire” with 4” lettered signs on each side of the trailer to identify it as a non commercial carrier.
11. Bob was truly great guy who loved all types of old vehicles and road trips. I had the pleasure of meeting him several times and he even chose my 55 for a feature and cover for Cars & Parts. I was once at a banquet but didn’t have a ticket and he insisted I sit with him. That was Bob. We had a great evening talking old cars and his profession which his knowledge was second to none. Thoughts and prayers are with the family. We lost another matriarch in the hobby. Very sad. <O:p
12. Wayne, I drove by the Hershey Lodge this morning and the large tent is still up and there were a dozen cars still under it. RM’s semis are still here and I saw a few of the Reliable car carriers still parked at the lodge. Email me your credit card numbers and bank letter and I will be more than happy to run over and negotiate a deal on a “classic car” for you.
13. Known and respected by many in the hobby. His stories were endless. Extremely knowledgeable to say the least. I believe his restoration shop now owned by his son David is bringing 5 vehicles to Hershey on Saturday. Al would be proud. http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/york/obituary.aspx?n=david-a-prueitt-al&pid=167424672#fbLoggedOut
14. Steve Ames (owner of Ames Performance Engineering who sells and reproduces Pontiac parts) bought the Cameo. It couldn’t be going to a better home. Steve has an amazing collection of original low mileage vehicles from Hemi’s to judges, Thunderbolts, Ferraris, Lamborghinis, etc. Three buildings of jaw dropping cars that I saw years ago. When they interviewed Steve he said the Cameo would stay as is.
15. One of the most opinionated subjects in the old car hobby. I have been running Mobil 1 synthetic in my 55 Pontiac (and all my old vehicles) since 1994 with zero issues and the engine has 74K original miles and never been apart. In my opinion all carbureted vehicles will put a certain amount of gas into the oil and synthetic can handle this better than conventional oil, including the acids from the combustion process, plus they take the heat and cold better than conventional oils. They corrected the leaking seal issue 20 plus years ago. In reality you really don’t need the zinc, again only my opinion and a lot of oil engineers. 16. Sorry not for sale. Not to hijack the Buick form but I just completed a 3 year restoration with close to 3,000 hours and just gave it the road and water test. I haven’t even taken any finished pictures yet. Just renewed the marine insurance on it and I am going to start using it. Have a good weekend.
17. I am heading to the meet shortly and will be busy helping out for the next 4 days (cleanup Sunday) so any questions from here on out won’t be answered here. Anything that needs immediate attention and is deemed critical the meet chairman’s phone number is posted above. Hope to see you there. Weather will be hot with no rain as of now in the forecast.
18. To clarify: a few food vendors will be open the day of show on Saturday under the grandstands. For Thursday and Friday there is a decent dinner a short walk just outside of Gate 1. Charlie: car counts are down. There are approximately 775 cars registered not counting all the PA vehicles so we are around 800 total. At Gettysburg a few years ago we had close to 900 and the last time we had it at the Carlisle Fairgrounds (I believe 2003) there were 1200 registered. <O:pHursst: yes you can park at the fairground starting on Thursday. If you need a ride to a hotel go to the motor home by building T and one of the region members will see you get a ride.
19. All the food vendors will be under the grandstand at the food court. A few will be open and enough to keep the lines manageable. I believe the ones on the end that make the huge ham and cheese sandwiches and excellent soup will be there.
20. Some questions that are very important to me. 1. Will there be a car corral and flea market on Friday? Yes: 8:00 am till 5:00 pm daily beginning Thursday, and from 8:00 am till 3:00 pm on Saturday 2. Will the packets be available at the fairgrounds on Friday or only at the host hotel? Host hotel. Available on Saturday at the fairgrounds 3. Do we still enter at gate#2 on Saturday? For the flea marker of Saturday show? Either way we will have people posted plus signs to guide you.
21. Here is a new Pontiac factory power steering demonstrator for 1955 that a friend gave me, complete with all hoses, wiring, clamps, solenoid, paperwork, instructions, etc. A dealer installed it for comparison purposes for a vehicle with and without power steering. Tempted to install it but probably won’t.
22. We are in the process of reviewing and finalizing many things such as traffic flow, parking, meet logistics, signs, direction of arrows on signs, etc, etc. Regarding your question: Enter Gate 1 for trailer parking which will be manned by Gettysburg Region personnel until 6:00 PM Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. If arriving after this hour there will either be additional Gettysburg Region personnel in place or signs directing you to the trailer parking area. Gate 1 will be open throughout the event with hired security officers overnight.
23. Charlie, We discussed this at the last meeting a few weeks ago and rather than misquote the time (plus I am the youth activity chair) I have a question into the appropriate people. Hold tight answer coming.
24. From discussing this with the meet chairman and from my previous post below we would like a few VW’s to consider. “we certainly understand that VW manufacturing is a part of PA history so consideration would be given (possibly a Rabbit car and pick-up) to a few select VW’s for display with signage noting the PA connection”
