3. Hi Bill.
I learned this a long time ago from an old Buick assembly plant worker. When Buick motors were painted on the assembly line. they were mostly complete. Any thing that sealed oil or water was attached and then painted. Water pump, fuel pump fuel lines all were painted engine color. Things like starter, generator and bracket, manifold, linkage, fan blade, were black or natural. Guess the even painted over gaskets. Cost savings probably dictated this.
Jim Schilf / palbuick@aol.com
 4. Russ;
NO. the block must be gutted, even the cam berings. Probably have to do rest by hand in cleaning tank.
Jim Schilf
 5. Hi Russ
I recently had my NOS 455 block cleaned of cosmoline. Had to disassemble complete block. A local machine shop heat cleaned the block of all cosmoline. They have a large tank that block is put into and heated to a very high temp. cleans everything. For the price well worth it. Works great on an older
block, cleans all rust out of all water passages. Looks like a new casting.
Jim Schilf / palbuick@aol.com

 16. Hi Greg
Why not try Midas or another muffler shop, if you buy their best muffler with the lifetime guarentee you can get a new muffler every couple of years. 20. This is not a hard job just tedious, you will have to first remonve the dash pad. There are several screws onthe underside that have to be removed, at the bottom of the corners of the pad there is a pin that
holds the pad in, be careful when removing, the dash can be damaged, us a good size screwdriver to remove. All the wiring harness will have to be disconnected, including any A/C vents and control wires, speedo cable, radio. When removing dash pad be careful of speaker wire. You will also have to drop the steering column, two bolts hold column to dash.
Use a shop manual.
Have a good supply of containers, or zip lock bags handy to save special nuts and bolts and screws.
A good idea as long as dash is out take clock out and have the quarts movement installed, save you the troble of taking apart later
I have some NOS parts for the LaSabre, send me your needs.
Jim Schilf / palbuick@aol.com
 21. I don't know if this will help , but I have a 3 speed trans form a 39 Cad, with a floor shifter set up. I think the cad box will bolt up tothe buick bellhousing but not sure i don't have and patters to compare. The front shaft may have to be changed, The cad box is an open driveshaft, and just about as long as the buicktrans with the long tailshaft. The only other trans is the Olds, it is a 6 bolt top, with an open drive shaft, any olds trans through the 50's
I had a 54 Special with the 3 sp trans years ago, and could not keep a trans, no such thing as speed shifting the Buick trans. After the 3rd trans replacement ,I could do the change in a couple of hours.
Do you want to sell car, I am looking for a 54 40 or 60 series with a 3 speed, 2 dr or HT.
Jim Schilf / palbuick@aol.com
 22. I located a good color paint for my grille a 1966 buick at a local hobby shop. small spray cans of a German silver color a very good match.
Try a local hobby shop , they have a larger range of colors than most parts stores.
Jim Schilf / palbuick
 23. To jaxops
Probably the replacement 70 wood grained dash inserts are mine. When I reproduced them about 7 years ago I could not afford to have the A/C panel reproduced. I had over 5 Doz originals, long since sold. I believe that Postons has a complete set for the GS's
The only part that will work is the A/c face plate.
Good luck
Jim Schilf / palbuick@aol.com
