  1. About the end of the Fall foliage here in Pennsylvania...had the Airstream out likely for the last time this year. Temperatures in the mid-50s and a cloudless sky...low sun on the horizon showing the 88-year-old paint in a fine light! Just rebuilt the distributor this Summer and got the vacuum advance functioning once again...runs beautifully and I can pull even moderately long, steep hills without issue in 3rd gear!

Having driven both routes extensively, I believe you will find the Lincoln Highway experience not nearly as rewarding as Route 66; while the markings and identification are mostly there for the older alignments (eastern states are much better at this; Pennsylvania & Ohio), the nostalgia, old landmarks and general feel for a pre-interstate experience generally are gone.  This is not to discourage you however, there are many, many nuggets of gems to be found along the way. I recommend Brian Butko's book; I used this as well as route maps from the Lincoln Highway Association website:

       If not already, I encourage you to peruse an article from WPC News dated May 1982, found here:

       You will find the model years were very nearly identical in terms of chassis and powertrain, with '63 being really the last Exner styled Imperial. Though notable changes did occur in several areas: 1962 received the aluminum torqueflite transmission, a new lighter, high torque starter, 1963 saw the 'Park' lever added to the transmission (earlier models relied on the parking brake); all years were pushbutton accentuated. The interior amenities/options were basically the same though 1961 was the last year of swivel seats.  All three years had the cool electroluminescent dash, ditto the 'flite-sweep' decklid option.  WWW tires went away in '62 I believe.  The 413 CID engine was standard across all three years with a slight drop in HP after '61. (350 to 340). 

     

      It may just come down to your personal preference as to what model year suits you best as it's practically impossible to state one year was materially better than the other. I like the '61 because of the FINS!!! Others may like the less dramatic styling of the '62 or '63. Hope this helps and good luck!

Wow, couldn't even have been bothered to take the leaf off the hood for the pictures...nice car and a Crown Coupe, but overpriced somewhat in light of the condition and the potential burgeoning headaches for the new user. Chock behind rear wheel, electric cooling fan installed and the ubiquitous Edlebrock intake and likely carb swap; wonder where the cast iron intake and AFB went.

As an update to my previous recommendation on upgrading the water pump impeller, my experience is no change in coolant level in the top tank, no coolant splashing about and overflowing.  I liken it to the Flowkooler pumps for more modern cars, which have vastly improved impeller designs over stock pumps. 

     

    These are no pressure systems, the chance of just an impeller change causing overflowing is slight; there would have to be something else amiss in the cooling system.  Since most of my driving is at slower speeds, (less than 50 mph) and the occasional parade, my thoughts were on increasing flow in these circumstances without compromising originality.  It works for me, no issues.  I actually learned of the possibility of changing the impeller from another forum member here in an older post.
