Dr. Don,
Can you please post a picture? I have 6 or 7 original screens, but want to see the attachment closer. Also, I got your window template. Thank you.

I sent you a PM. Thanks so much for the reply.

How many would you like? I have probably 1/2 a dozen. I don’t know if they are repros or NOS. I don’t have any of the attaching hardware, but I’d love to know how they were attached. We acquired these from Jerry Kurtz’s collection.

Hi all,
I am working on my 1937 Studebaker Dictator sedan. I’m looking for the springs that keep tension on the front vent windows. The original springs fell to pieces when i took the windows apart for new glass. Not sure if other cars used similar springs. They are 1/2 inch long with 1/2 inch outer diameter and 1/4 inch inner diameter. I did purchase some die springs from McMaster Carr to try, but would
like originals if I could find them. They have more tension than the McMaster carr springs do. Thanks for looking.

John,
I didn’t reach out to any of them yet, but that was my concern. What a pain. Rex, thank you. I’ll check into McMaster. Tom, that is how mine looked after unbolting them. Is it possible to have a machinist make them?

Hi all,
I’m working on my vent windows on my Dictator. The springs for the vent windows were so brittle, they just fell apart. Does anybody have any springs? They are part number 266130. They measure 1/2 inch OD, 1/2 inch long, and 1/4 inch ID (roughly). They were used on cars from 1937 to 1946. Please let me know if you have any or have any leads. Thank you.

There’s a little restaurant in Lancaster called The Pretzel Hut, that sells Moxie. It is an acquired taste but I love it with a good soft pretzel!

I’m looking for a NOS coil for my 1937 Studebaker dictator. Also, most anything studebaker is on my list!

I sent mine to a gentleman and lady on the west coast. I searched the forums here to find the name. I think it was Clean Sweep on the west coast. Kent was the gentleman’s name.

Hi guys,
I wanted to follow up on my rear wheel seals. I ended up making my own seals using the cutter Gary recommended. I found 3/8 inch Nitrile cork from a supply company in Ohio. Using measurements I found from a wheel bearing and seal supplier plus the original NOS seals I had, I cut the seals to the correct inner and outer diameters. I then sanded the seals down to the correct 5/16 thickness. This worked well and will last a long time.

Hi Guys,
Ok, so I removed the axles from the car. Before removing them, I measured the end play. I had 0.013 inch end play - too much. The bearings were worn, so I will be replacing them.
When I did my front bearings, I used Sta-lube’s heavy duty drum brake grease. It is the thick, yellow, stringy grease that packs well. Is this what I should use in the rear as well? My only reason for asking is that the 37s have grease zerks for greasing the bearings. The Sta-lube wheel bearing grease is not the kind you can pump into a zerk. It is much thicker.
Also, what gear oil weight should I use? I read that GL-4 hypoid is recommended but what weight?
Thanks guys.

Thanks Gary. I appreciate the torque value! I’ll write that down for future reference. I think I will make a second one if I can’t reuse one I currently have. I have found 2 NOS inner seals, so that’s a plus! Thanks again.

Hi guys,
While replacing my rear brake shoes, I decided to pull the axles and check the outer wheel bearings. I’m thinking I should replace the cork seals. I found 2 of the inner seals on eBay, but only one outer seal. Part number 510735. Does anybody have one or two available?
Also, what is the torque spec for the large axle nut? The service manual just says to tighten it. I’d like to torque it appropriately.
Thank you,
Nate

We have a number of straight 8 blocks available in our parts inventory right now. I don’t know much about the condition, but they are saved. I’ve toyed with the idea of rebuilding one just to have it around.

I was looking at that. It looks like the tool is for new drums/shoes. I’m trying to find one to buy so I can use it in the future, so maybe I can study the instructions and see if there is adjustments for drums that are turned.

Thanks Rex. That’s a huge help. I also found a post from Jerry Kurtz from a few years ago that describes the same procedure.

Ok. Yes, I noticed the change in the 1937 shop manual. I have the 35 and 36 manuals which have similar pictures but show equal length lining. Now, I wish I could find the AAMCO tool to adjust them per the manual. I will adjust them on the car by feel - as I’ve done before. Thanks for discussing this with me. I probably overthink this, but it’s fun to study these old cars. Good luck on your 39!

Yes I read your post before. Were your shoes reclined with old style Asbestos lining? I have a set of shoes here and it looks like old style brake shoes with what I think is asbestos. I’m hoping to use the older style rather than newer harder lining. So, you think they originally had a shorter primary shoe?

Hi all,
I am rebuilding my front end and have a set of asbestos brake lining/shoes that I want to install. The service manual shows the longer secondary shoe towards the front and the shorter primary shoe towards the back. Is that correct? If you look at the 1935 and 1936 service manuals, the linings are the same length on the primary and secondary shoe. In the 37 manual, the picture of the brakes changes to the short and long shoes. Does anyone know for sure before I put these things together? I'm planning to install as the 37 shop manual shows. I wonder why they changed to a shorter primary shoe in 1937.

Craig Riker in Ohio did mine on my 37 Studebaker and they are excellent and it was a reasonable price.

Thanks Frank,
that’s my plan! Appreciate the info!

I’ve considered having my original ones rebuilt. Has anyone had experience with that? It’s a little costly but retains the original fluid shocks instead of gas.

Original Shock absorbers wanted for 1937 Dictator 5A

Hi guys,
I’m working on my 1937 Dictator 5A. I’m looking for the original hydraulic shock absorbers. The ones on my car are replacements and don’t have the drain plug to drain and refill the hydraulic oil. They don’t have to be NOS, just an original set for the front and back. Thanks,
Nate
