  1. Not me, but friend won a 64 Chevy convertible from a hot rod club in Connecticut,It was in the late 80s. It was a piece of shxt... A front clip brazed to a rear clip with a clakky 283 motor.
  2. A universal Cater BB updraft was the perfect fit for our old 28 Whippet. The ( Carter UV updrafts) were sized like,1,2,3,4 for motor displacment. The (1) 4 banger size is common. Parts are available too !

  4. I only know one joke and it's old. A guy finally feed up with his Model T Ford ,posted an add in the local paper that he will leave his car for free at the corner of X-W-Z at 8,A:M on such a date. When he got there,there were 7 other Model T's all ready there.. This joke was also seen in the banjo players world . That makes more sense! LOL.

You know back in the era(early) the wide fender lamps of the Pierce were illegal in some states for a while , like the Model A ford cowl fuel tank was in the beginning( though earlier cars had it). I would not take the regular NAF( normal as fxxk) position of head lamps as a detraction. The wide fender lamps was only a sales gimmick and had nothing to do with the quality of car( the Rolls Royce) in America. Drive an early Pierce Arrow,you might give up old cars completely,because you will never have one(economically) and bust your bubble...Fxxk a Dusenberg. ..
  6. Almost every state in the country has someplace that can do it if you take the time to search beyond antique automobiles. Silvering and Re-silvering is your search for platers . Re-silvering mirrors and hardware,etc Often it will be will be 2/3/times the price of an aluminum vaporized sealed modern reflective material that needs no attention verses the silver you should polish every season to gain the best re-flectiveness. Even in the 20s and 30s to the ,40s it was expected to have your reflectors replated or replaced as needed(every few years),if you did your proper maintenance and polished out the silver. Unless you plan not to use your car regularly,at night often,and are an extreme purest..go for silver if you can't sleep. But the god of your choice will not judge you, I will not or any other mortal judge you for not resilvering for the ultimate authenic-ness. I have never seen or heard an A.Hole ever in 50 years questions ones authentic reflective material on headlamps. Your time,money,and thoughts will be better spent on other details . If you only knew how many high end, high priced show cars had shxtty chrome(the worst and cheapest reflective material)reflectors,you'd barf. Let your ego of perfection take a back seat here and compromise for a better ,longer lasting ,more economical material. Stated with love and experience . D.   7. Depends on new wood or old previous nail trashed old dry wood. 1931 Ford redo top in the 30s, 12 oz tacks for material. Drip and trim finish moldings ,one inch flat head nails spaces 4 to 5 inches... adjust for crappy wood. Do not forget to seal all exposed edges with something to prevent leaks in the future. Every original top I replaced had some tar shit goop between the top material and wood or steel body panel edge and some kind of sealer done after the finished moldings applied ,(1923-1936) my experience.

I try and want to write hand written thoughtful letters to those in morning ,families and friends in distress.better a phone call if at all possible.   9. My only comment is the active want of a 1929/Essex Super Six or later series/29 "Challenger' 4 door standard sedan or 3 window town sedan or phaeton in good original or thoughtful restored,part or whole condition. Near turn key shape not far from mid state Connecticut.. Cash for a good car!
  10. When did (hidden hunter) start worrying about skin cancer and hats? Some folks bake them selves for 60 plus years and.skin cancer is not what kills them at 101. Or smoking a cigar every day since 1940.. We all have different make ups honey.and to call others crazy for not wearing a hat,really? Did.you feel this way at age 38? We(I) love you ,for sharing your warning,and probably from YOUR own experience later in life. But I am vitamin D deficient and encouraged to get lots of mid day (,peak,)sun(expose my skin,,)
  11. The iron housing is probably rim/wheel/ make of car specific .The lock o.d. may fit several applications over several years. Car known specific commands the higher prices. Chain and padlock works just as well.
  12. 1920s general ignition parts catalogs are rare and more often then not are non specific in any useful details..I.E Buick spark plug, 1908/1911= order part number 12,4 required 1912/16 = ,part number 14. Cadillac plug= ,number 9/ 1918-1924. Ford plug= 15 cents each. Kind of thing.
  13. On a serious note,since I was a kid, late ,August,September,October,November and early December are the most enjoyable times of the year for driving these vintage cars. Then ad slushying around Christmas day delivering gifts in an open car in 28 degree weather. Forcing the younglings to go and sing carols to aunt Claire,getting stopped by a cop at 1am and then ralling him into the holiday spirit
  14. What is a dress hat? We have wrecked period ,beaver skin top hats,silk collapsible top hats,Derby's ,Bromberg's, straw(boater/skimmer) hats by the dozens in 50 years . baseball caps,small porkpies,and cowboy hats survived. Hats come off entering and exiting is the rule in closed cars... ..
  15. It all depends...Lol.. Color,other options,body type?. In my opinion,if the cars does not have a luggage rack pending a trunk for travel,side mount,front fender mounted spare wheel is stupid. Just making a cheap model looking more then it is. Dual side mount tires on any car is pretentious!

  18. Evey day, is a day for a drive in our old cars. Darling. sweaty baby,Once you are home from your daily and or weekly work grind,trash your modern car! Use your collector car for gods sake and enjoy it. It should be second nature if you are a real enthusist. Fix it ,polish it,restore it USE it baby! .
  19. Countless times I have needed specialty,use one time tools ,and expressed the need,to so called antique car friends in conversation in the moment. They don't have it or respond with a vacant look. You finally struggle to get the job done,one way or another,and months or years later in car discussion ,with those same people ,they say, '"oh,If I knew you needed to do that,I have that tool or tools,you should have called me". Gurrrrr! I put them on the bottom of the help list,and on top of the grudge list. Then there is the ones who don't recall you loaned them special tools,never returned! You go looking and they have no recollection. Only to find out later,the big shot gave them to someone else,who you know. They don't offer them back either. Hum?. I have been waiting for the return of my custom tow bar for 40 years.. A Connecticut,cheapskate crooked lawyer (who had a 29 Essex coupe at the time) in Cheshire Ct,who bought a 1941 Plymouth station wagon from me for a song .He is the thief. You borrow a tool and keep it,your a thief and a creep! No question...
  20. Darling, old rubber compounds ,like every thing else in life are only going to last just so long. You can only do so much to preserve what you have ,with products and avoid wear and tear,but in the end,life is to short to worry to much. Sludge it up and it will make it look good on the top service but eventually the base matt thickness will give out. Just enjoy the beast,and keep it up best you can. We all will love you just the same when the running boarded mat's crumble. Life goes on... .
  21. I Hope (and know) Jay will recover fast and completely. There comes a time,what we do alone at 16 to 46 years old on cars,we should be more thoughtful pushing 70. Simple crazy azz eruptions in our youth we are not so quick to get out of. And if we do,the recovery if injured is times/ten after 50 years old,even for an old jock.!
  22. When ever you can, make the effort to take a veteran out for a spin.Or a disabled brother or sister,make the day of a special needs child. It is not hard to do,and a minor scuff ,if any will make your machine realy worth it's preservation x ten.
