    Toothy like a primer.

I'm glad you're using the correct formulation. The first thing I painted in 1988 was this radiator shell that had pitting the area of the hood ornament. I still have that piece today . I would use it as a display when I did the shows. This is how you level pitting without.using a bunch of putty I don't know how many hundreds of people in 18 years ran their fingers over it and smoothed it out. Hopefully I will get to Hershey this year

  2. This is my 55 which was a total rust-bucket. Entire car inside outside top and bottom is primed with the silver first , epoxy primer for surfacing and the color and the clear. the clear is a clear used on the bottom of jet aircraft to prevent stone chipping. If this thing winds261735831_IMG-211455chevy.jpg.f6c44f2d1ef341a35b1ec3e06c4c2e63.jpg up in a field after I'm gone might have a chance of surviving until the next guy gets to it

  3. That was reason for this post. If they had stayed with what the developers designed things would have been a lot more successful. It amazes me that so many companies followed suit. Some of these companies have never restored a car or actually painted one.By painting your chassis with the black you are essentially painting it with concrete and wood floor sealer that breathes. They offer a clear version. Paint clear over a piece of metal and put it outside it will develope what look like viens in a leaf and after a short time rust. This is the reason that it will peel off in sheets.

Sometime around the mid-seventies Mobay Chemical Corporation developed Bridge primer that was one of the most powerful primers in the world. It was based on a simple principle that if you eliminated moisture and oxygen you cannot create rust and whatever rust was under it cannot continue. Resin produced at that time from Bayer chemical was compounded with aluminum flake. Rust is oxidation and the aluminum flake which is critical in this primer , Bridges coated with this system had a 20-year service life in the harshest climates. On my projects the last 30 years I prime everything with two coats of this silver primer then I go from there. In the late 70s it found its way into the automobile Hobby. It was sold as a rust preventative and a metal filler because it leveled pitting nicely. One day The powers-that-be decided that they are painting the bottom of their cars they would prefer black rather than silver and the black was born. The powers that be at that time didn't know what a carburetor was They also decided to change the resin, pigment and the solvent. When developed by Moby it was designed as a three coat system. Two coats of the silver primer and a color coati. . This photo is the Pittsburgh Homestead High Level Bridge 14 years less than 5% corrosion

  5. I retired from Mastercoat 6 years ago. We stopped shipping to Canada because of all the grief that we encountered from Canadian customs. they actually confiscated one of our packages for the hell of it. Sent forms for us to fill out that we were an actual company. So we stopped shipping to Canada. This covid situation certainly hasn't helped for crossing the border

The most powerful chassis system for anti-corrosion and anti-chemicals and acids is the 3 coat polyurethane system. The primer consists of an aluminum pigmented moisture cured primer that was formulated for bridges in the mid-seventies. This heavy body primer does an amazing 8000 hours of salt spray, and once scratched rust will not travel beyond the scratch.

AG 111 polyester urethane was specifically designed for the New York City subway system to combat corrosion and graffiti. Polyester urethanes are the most expensive but they offer maximum chemical and acid resistance..

In 1988 I introduced these coatings to the hobby under the master coat brand and set up for many years in the white field at Hershey. There are other brands in the marine trades that offer these types of coating systems or derivatives thereof. I hope my knowledge of industrial coatings might be helpful to other people that are preservationists.I have since retired I hope I have not broke any forum rules by mentioning any brand names. Pat
