  1. The little 380SL needed a big brother, so over the course of a 1300 mile round trip I brought home a sight unseen 1977 SLC. Not completely sight unseen, a member of a Mercedes-Benz forum looked at it for me. 50,905 miles, but the reason it stopped there is that’s when the badly overheated engine decided it had enough. That was 1989 or 90 from what I can tell. An engine with reportedly 125,000 miles was included with the car. Current version of the story is that the dealer pulled the head and announced that the engine was done, and that’s all the information I have in that regard. And then happened what always happens. It floated between a couple other people, gathering the door dings common on parked cars until I decided I’d add my name to the list. The car is very nice cosmetically and I’m told the engine swap really isn’t bad. My experience with fuel injection is limited but the manuals for these cars are very good. More pictures below
  2. This photo is stolen from the Antique Car Museum in Iowa, as suggested by w Ranard. This certainly does look like the right car.
  3. Seems like the price of these old cars, at least the common ones, is on the way down. I’ve found many 50s American cars in daily driver condition in the $7000-15,000 range. My problem is that buying a good runner that only needs a little maintenance seems like cheating. You need to earn antique car through suffering, despair, false hope, domestic disruption, blood loss and learning French words.
  4. WOULD SOMEONE PLEASE BUY THIS BEFORE I DO! I have the engine, transmission and instrument panel from a MK I that I could use in it. I’ve talked to him and sounds like a decent guy. He keeps lowering the price. https://denver.craigslist.org/cto/d/denver-classic-1951-jaguar-mk/7727542934.html Hot Rod (project). Location Denver (originally from Phoenix - NO RUST in sills!) 5. Sounds like Carlsbad Caverns aren’t in your route, but well worth it if you make it that far. The International UFO Research Center and Museum in Roswell is a little oversold. But if you make it to Vaughn, almost dead center in the state , is the Chuckwagon (assuming it’s still there) located in a converted gas station. Appeared to be run by grandma and granddaughter. The best green chili enchiladas I have ever had.
  6. DeViouS. At least the have a sense of humor.

  8. I assume the selection of DSs is better on your side of the pond. Is it cost effective to ship them over? I don’t want you to go out of your way looking, but I would want a driver, not a show car, with the European headlights and air conditioning. I’m not buying one immediately (chasing down a Mercedes Benz 450SLC at the moment) but it is on my list.
  9. Alfas and Citroens are on my list too. My Dad had 2 DSs but sold them long before I had a drivers' license. I'd like to find a good driver.
  10. Get it running and take the lady for a day trip. I bet she’d be happy to have one more ride in the old Model A.
  11. I did find a snapshot of the Auburn. I know I took others but this is the only one that has turned up. This would have been taken in Montana in about 1992. Under the blue cover to the right you can see the rear fender of the 1913 Mercer Runabout.
  12. Thank you, I will do a little follow up. As far as I know his family sold off all or part of his collection starting in the late 1990s.
  13. Can a car get any more British than a TD? Maybe a Morgan. I’ll have one someday.
  14. Yup, if this was close I’d own it by now.
  15. I've got a Jaguar 3.4 litre 6 with a 4 speed that needs to go into something.

  18. I was about 5 years and my Dad made me a shirt, a bright red t-shirt that I wore until it was falling apart. Down the front he had stenciled the words Unsafe at Any Speed.
  19. $500 is more a suggested price. Penalties are applied, somewhat arbitrarily, if they suspect your car exceeded that amount.
