Picked up my 88' Reatta almost a month ago now. Been ironing out the wrinkles pretty easily thanks to all the information here, but I got an issue I can't find a direct reference to. Whenever I get down to less than 1/4 of a tank, the car will stall when accelerating from a stop. It will start up immediately afterward for the first 2 or 3 times, but after that it gets a little harder to start.
When looking the car over I noticed the green/gray goo spot on the radiator hose that usually indicates trouble with the ICM or Coil pack. I didn't think this was related, but not sure if these had been replaced or not I went ahead and replaced both just to be safe. In addition I cleaned the MAF sensor, IAC Valve, and EGR Valve.
Other than that it looks like the car was recently serviced and it runs beautifully for the first 3/4 of the tank. No other stalls, stutters, or hesitations. Maybe a little hard shift sometimes, but not bad overall.
It sounds to me like a fuel issue, but its odd that it doesn't present in any other way. I've had equipment do this before, and it has been a cracked fuel line in the tank, but never with a pump in tank design like this. Thinking it might be the fuel gauge, I kept track of my fill ups. When the gauge reads less than 1/4 tank it takes about 14 gallons to fill. Which makes sense for an 18 gallon tank.
So I'm not sure what my next step should be. Should I start checking fuel pressure? Drop the tank? Has anyone come across this before?
Any help would be appreciated.
