  1. Well, at least you got a good story out of it! I bet not many people can say their car has been started by a military dive team.
  2. And here we are 100 years later and cars can go for decades and hundreds of thousands of miles with oil changes and basic maintenance. Really amazing how far we've come. I wonder how long the car was out of service during the yearly overhaul? If the owner bothered with it anyway.
  3. Is that why Mr. Lentinello left Hemmings? I noticed they got a new editor for Classic Car a while back.
  4. Might be worth a wooden nickel!
  5. If those photos were taken with a period film camera they could pass for a hundred years old! Only thing that gives it away is the signs and guardrail!
  6. The service manual for my Rambler says to use a 160 degree thermostat if using alcohol antifreeze, 195 for the green stuff. I guess the idea was the alcohol would boil away slower at the lower temp. I'm just surprised that people were still using the alcohol into the 1960s. Must have been cheaper?
  7. It's named after Sherman and Peabody's machine! Available here: archive.org It's a cache of all sorts of websites, it's handy for finding deleted threads and things like that, if it could get to them in time.
  8. I think part of the first page had been cached by google, I looked at the wayback machine but it hadn't been archived there unfortunately.
  9. At this point I'll click on them just to see how bad the real car is. Always funny to see what basket case some guy is trying to unload. Another annoying one is the low prices where they list it at $0.
  10. I wonder how well listing an ad does in the magazine vs their website. The site has a wide range of cars listed, the market may have moved there.
  11. Yeah, it is a fine line. It is a slippery slope that eventually leads to taking cars off the road (hopefully in the distant future). At the same time, enough people abusing the program might lead to the whole thing getting shut down for everyone.
  12. I bet this one was purchased and covered up by the oil companies because it worked too well. Same with the mythical 100mpg carburetor. 🙄
  13. Looks like most of the midwest and west is no inspection or emissions only, which typically doesn't apply to antiques.
  14. I think this is the real reason behind it. Some states are stricter than others but here in Idaho classic/antique registration is a one-time payment last I checked. The idea is you only drive it for shows, maintenance, or occasional pleasure, but people will just ignore that part and hope the police don't see them driving to work every day in their 1995 Toyota. What's nice here is the DMV lets you use year of manufacture plates on a daily driver if you pay the same fee as a regular plate.
  15. I have a subscription to Hemmings Classic Car and it's been arriving on time. I typically get it around 1.5-2 months early, got the March issue a couple weeks ago which is pretty close to normal.
  16. My favorite photos are old street scenes and businesses, it's always interesting to see all these cars when they were just everyday transportation for most people.
  17. Here's the local Hudson dealer in the late 30s. It later became the AMC/Rambler dealer and this location was open into the 80s. Unfortunately it's just an empty lot now, but the Peterson company is still in business. And here's some demolition work:
  18. If any of you have a Motor Trend OnDemand subscription, they have a series called 'Seduced By Speed', and the first episode is about the Dale. It's only ~40 minutes but I thought it was interesting. https://www.motortrendondemand.com/show/seduced-by-speed/12628/
  19. Those 'Tile' chips are still around, I'm not sure of battery life though. I believe Apple is coming out with something similar, those might be worth looking at if you use their products already.
  20. I agree. I can't tell you how many times I've come across an old discussion on a forum that would have been helpful to ID something, only for the pictures to be gone or some of the posts missing.
