  1. Thank you for this information. It is very helpful. M
  2. No they are not the same. The 6 digit number used on the Bill of Sales and Certificate of Ownership are the same, but they are not on the vehicle. The car was bought new in 1962 by my father.
  3. Thank you for the information. I am happy that my dad bought the Mercedes new and he was the only owner. However, It seems that back in 1962 (when the car was bought), NJ must have issued a separate 6 digit serial number to each owner on their Certificate of Ownership. I can't find this number on the car anywhere, yet this number was used with the registration and insurance cards. There might have been some mistake along the way with paperwork? Still hitting one road block after another. Not sure exactly where to go from here, but there has to be an answer somewhere.
  4. Thank you so much for the suggestion and the link. I will take a look. It has been very frustrating .
  5. On the Bill of Sales and Certificate of Ownership there is not a VIN number, but a 6 digit Serial Number on all the documents (begins with 00). There is also a Key Number on the Bill of Sales. The VIN number is etched or stamped above the grill of the car, but it does not seem to correspond with the Serial Number on the paperwork. I really don't understand it and I have not had luck finding anyone yet that does. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
  6. Having a problem with getting a new title for my father's (who passed away) 1963 Mercedes-Benz 300 SE Convertible. It is on a desk at the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission. They said that even though I have the Original Bill of Sales (my father was the original owner) and the "State of New Jersey Division of Motor Vehicles Department of Law and Public Safety Certificate of Ownership of a Motor Vehicle" paper, the serial number and the VIN numbers don't match and I would need an explanation. I have contacted several people and even Mercedes, but I am hitting dead ends every time. The car registration and insurance use the 6 digit serial number as the VIN. Any suggestion or words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated. Thanking you in advance, M
