  1. looking to part with any of those parts Larry? Might be a few things I’d like talk to you about if so? great score!!
  2. We built a new gas tank for our 27 Standard because we couldn’t find a used one. Glad we did so 🤞🏼 We never have to worry about replacing it again! It’s coated inside and out and all brand new! Well “mostly brand new”, we reused the necks!
  3. Not mine but I saw this fuel tank on eBay, someone filled in the normal area the fuel gauge would be and relocated a sending unit. Seems it’s for a late 20’s Buick. just thought I’d share should someone be looking.... https://www.ebay.com/itm/1928-Buick-Gas-fuel-tank-great-shape-HOT-ROD-STREET-ROD-RAT-ROD-even-a-28-Buick/223951228381?hash=item3424888ddd:g:6DUAAOSw32Fec3GZ
  4. Update: ok I haven’t painted the pointer yet however I did lay in the EBS Coatings Paint and I am happy w the results. I do not think this will ever cause an issue again with the letters coming off since the etching is deep and it allowed quite a bit of the paint to adhere. I hope everyone likes the results and I am planning on painting the pointer tomorrow! If anyone has any questions or would like guidance on doing this project please don’t not hesitate to reach out to me and I will be more than happy to walk you through it the best I can! Etching really is a VERY easy project!!
  5. The original was black? i didn’t realize that, I’ve only seen everyone doing them in red! Hmmm, maybe I should keep it black then! I’ll try to decide this week and get it finished up and installed! ill share final pics when I have it finished up ! I am def going to lay in black KBS Coatings into the etching and am thinking I’ll go w the #3 Red, although I do like #5 at the bottom!!! we will see.....
  6. yeah that’s what I’ve seen from others unfortunately! Etching is easy and I’d think most of us have everything needed in their homes right now and don’t have to purchase anything other than making up a stencil!! Im glad you like it, I’m looking forward to cleaning it up a little more and finishing it up....get rid of the remaining black primer and lay in the correct KBS Coating and finish it up with a red paint on the needle! ill share more pictures when it’s finished up... in the meantime: which red do you guys think would be best for the pointer needle? lets say left to right is 1-4 and the one under those four will be #5?
  7. Thanks Mark, I appreciate that! You can do it, it’s actually easy!

  9. Ok update.... I did a little thing last night! I finally got the nerve up to etch my actual fuel gauge face/dial. Prior to last night, as you can see earlier in this thread, I had etched a paint can lid. Honestly, what was preventing from doing the actual fuel gauge was......FEAR!! I was scared to burn through the fuel gauge, I was scared that my wallet would sustain a big hit if I had to purchase a replacement, and I let fear get in the way of me messing it up and not having the original fuel gauge and frankly my pride got in the way! With life as we know it changing before I’m out eyes, our every day life that is, with the now pandemic Coronavirus (Covid-19). Wonder what happened to Covid-1 through Covid-18?? Something to think about huh?! I kid I kid.... Back on topic, I followed the same process for etching that I did above on the paint can lid however this time, at the suggestion of my oldest rug rat, I did 5 trial runs on the bottom of a soda can as it was the closest thing I had on hand that had approximately the same thickness and finish of my actual fuel gauge. I thought that was a fantastic idea!! Using the bottom of a soda can allowed me to determine how long I should do the etch. I did 5 etchings a one minute intervals, 1 min, 2 min, 3 min and so on till I capped it at 5 minutes. Honestly for my little 1.5 amp 6 or 12 volt (I USED 12 VOLT!!!) there was not much difference between 3, 4, or 5 minutes! I wanted to do two things: •Not etch right though the material I was etching. •Etch long enough to have a recessed area that I could then lay some paint into the letters. I have not decided which paint I will use but most likely it will be the black KBS Coatings moisture cured paint that I used on the outside of my newly built fuel tank. (The black-ish color in the letters now is a light coat of black primer I used just so the letters showed up easily for the camera and a little primer never hurts!). i still need to clean up the paint from the edges of the gauge dial, even though the edge is really not visible when the gauge is installed it’s more of a pride thing as we all know. If I don’t clean it up and know it’s there it will drive me crazy. I do have adult ADD!! 🤓. I also need to paint the needle itself but I thought I’d update everyone.... So without further ado:
  10. Oakley Sumpter was a good friend of my Grandmother’s when I loved with her in MD. I take it has cars were fairly well known?
  11. See above but yes you get the concept of how to get 6v and 12v out of two 6v batteries but refer to my diagram above for correct wiring in series or parallel
  12. I have a second battery tray but my goal is to mount two 6v Optima batteries side by side in one battery tray! I’m never parting w the car so having two batteries isn’t a big deal to me but the dual output Genny and the two batteries should fix me up perfectly!
  13. No Sir, converting the generator to a dual output so everything will be retained on the 6v side but it will also be able to output 12v as well. Changing over to two 6v Optima batteries wired in series so one battery will run the 6 v side of the vehicle and then combined batteries will take care of the 12v side so it will retain the stock look aside from having two batteries. Everything can be removed easily if needed and besides the generator being rewound no other modifications will be made. AND if needed I can switch out the modified generator out and go back to a stock purely 6v generator if needed! Best of both worlds in my opinion.
  14. Or you run two separate systems, a 6v and touch nothing in the car so it keeps its originality, AND a separate 12v system to run modern items of your choosing! This is the way I am going.....
  15. I have a customer that sold Jay Leno a 1911 and 1913 Packard, both cars are on his “Leno’s Garage” YouTube page.... My Grandmother was good friends w the gentleman “Oakley Sumpter” that restored the 1911 many moons ago..... Cool story with a local connect......
  16. Morgan I would never tell someone else what to do with their car, after all it’s their car! I might not always agree with other people’s decisions but in the end, it’s their property and their hard earned cash! I’ve worked in the automotive business for 20 years and I see people do some amazing things to their vehicles to make them their own, I also see some that makes me think “what the hell are they thinking?!” But at the end of the day, it isn’t my vehicle! Nor is it my $$....
  17. I have decided to do a due output within my generator housing! So I will be keeping the car, it’s drivetrain, all of its gauges and stock lighting running on the 6 volt side of things. then the 12v output will run anything else I want to charge or run, up to about 20amps.
  18. Shoot me a text tomorrow and let me know if we are good so I can finalize everything and settle up with Ron on all his hard work for us Hugh. Ill get my parts to you as well.
  19. the three small rectangles above the stencil where I was testing how long to hold the Q tip on the metal to get the right depth of the etch. It doesn’t take long to deep into the metal I can assure you that, and the amperage if the power supply, or in my case the battery charger, will slow down or speed up the depth of the etch! i am going to do this same process on a friend’s small aluminum vial that she wears on a nceklace w her recently deceased daughter’s cremation remains in. She wants her daughter’s name and DOB and DOD on it, I am happy to do it for her after showing her my test etch on the paint can lid shown above. ill be honest with you, I have not etched my fuel gauge face yet as I am a bit nervous since they are made of unobtainium and I only get one shot at doing it! i am going to do some practicing this weekend and might get enough nerve to go ahead and do the fuel gauge, if and when I do I’ll be sure to post the video and pictures as others have asked!
  20. Hello Mark! i too am working on the face/dial on our 27/27, I had some templates made up for the gauge and it’s my first practice run on a paint can lid. The route that I am going seems to be a bit different than most folks, I am acid etching the original face of the gauge with new markings. This process will allow the paint/coating to sit inside the etched area and shouldn’t flake or wear off. That’s my thought process anyway! Here is my first practice run on paint can lid:
  21. Dan the 2020 AACA Hershey Show/Meet is Weds October 7th through Saturday October 10th 2020. Are you local to the area? We are technically in two locations however we keep the car about 2.5 to 3 hours from Hershey. I too am looking for the interior fabric or a company that makes the kits for the ‘27 Buick (27/27). The Previous caretakers, sounds better than owners as we are all Stewart’s of these beautiful works of art, seemed to do nearly everything to our Buick aside from the interior! I know the Widow whom we got the car from and she talked me that her late husband liked the authenticity of the original interior! Our interior isn’t hateful however it’s heavily worn in spots, such as the upper corner of the front seats, and the color is faded. Our interior is like a Navy Blue in color, well at least that’s what it seems it was! 🤓 We are also looking for a generator for this car 👇🏼 should anyone have one they could part with?? Please?! 🙏🏼🙏🏼
  22. Congrats 56Chief!! You’ll find invaluable information here amount these fine folks!! Lord knows I wouldn’t even have my 1927 Model 27 (27-27) running and driving by now if it not be it for them!!! Seriously.... Enjoy the process, it’s a lot of fun and the knowledge of the folks here amazes me every day!! Don’t be afraid to ask questions, trust I’ve problem asked all the same ones as have many more before us! Again, enjoy here and I would highly suggest making it to the Annual Hershey PA AACA Shoe held every Fall, if you like old smelly cars like the rest of us, you’ll be drooling before you get down one isle at the Hershey show!!
