  1. I have a friend that has a 37 Ford with the small 60hp flathead V-8. The car started and ran great, but after it was warmed up there was no way the engine would turn over. Six Twelve Batteries, starters you name it. We lived on a hill so one day when it wouldn't start we pushed the car to the end of the street and turned down the street down the hill and popped the clutch, that car skidded all the way down the hill and stopped. So we put it in neutral and pushed it into a parking space, a couple of hours later we went back down and it started up fine. Couple of months go by and he drives the thing to my house says he's had it. I disassembled the engine to find the last Flathead expert installed Forged aluminum pistons, but clearanced the engine for the stock alloy steel pistons. It didn't take a metallurgist to figure out what had happened. A re-bore and new pistons. Still going strong after 40 years now.
  2. B-52 Jet intake cowl and fairing; 1959 Cadillac front turn signal and running lamp housing; and 1960 Buick headlamp housing
  3. The twin booms with rudders on the P-38 are the twin rear pontoon and taillight fins on the 48-49 Cadillac; The intakes for the engine oil coolers is beneath the prop, and can be seen in the 1949-50 Oldsmobile under the headlamps;
  4. Some look good and some look bad. My favorite; That roof will appear on 58 Chevrolet and Pontiac. This Cadillac was designed specifically NOT to have skirts
  5. Don't know why you are telling me. I was in the middle of it.
  6. So what you are saying is all these mods are illegal. That tells me they should not be on the road. Since you are in Ca. how are you getting through emission testing, especially the visual part? It's hard for me after having been in the industry for so long, and part of the time in emission certification trying to meet standards that were given to us that some outfits try to undo all that hard work. Emission wise it makes our products look bad.
  7. Yes I would. I would also be interested if the mods are Emissions legal. Do you think NISSAN likes to spend money on multiple intakes for a VQ to fit in different cars. They don't.
  8. Modern cars are designed to make it difficult for the shade tree mechanic to work on them. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yes and no. There is usually no rebuilding of parts and usually no parts to rebuild something with so it's diagnosis and replace. My doctor friend once said to me, when it comes to trouble shooting he had it easier than me. I asked why and he said with a patient you have the ability to talk to them and ask questions like where is it hurting or what symptoms are you having and a car can't do that. The good news today is cars DO talk to you and that makes things easier. There is plenty of room to use a straight upper intake like Nissan used in the 350Z (same exact engine) but instead they chose to use one that wrapped back over the rear plugs. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Actually there isn't enough room for a 350 intake, and the engines are not the same. Your Altima has different camshafts to go along with that intake to provide a broader torque curve for your car which is heavier than the Z. The Z relies more on peak HP than the Altima. I have the 4.1 version in a Frontier which has different cams and intake manifold for even more torque for towing. BTW that engine has been on the ten best engines ever built list for over ten years. I realize the spark plug change on the rear cylinders for a novice can take a long time, but with the proper tools it's no great task. Since the spark plug change interval is 100K..... for some people that's ten years, heck it's not like changing a IMS on a 9 series Porsche. The important part while your in there is to change the little coolant and vacuum hoses while you have accessibility.
  9. If he has repeatedly a problem that a dealer can't fix with a paper trail he's got lemon law protection.
  10. Try your back in the day mechanic on a 1940 HydraMatic!
  11. I was in the business over 50 years. We were called technicians. Grease monkey if you didn't know what you were doing.
  12. The 301 is a good low performance engine that can make very good mileage as long as you drive your car in a reasonable responsible way. For what they were designed for they are a good engine. Their weakness is the crankshaft, and the Siamese intake ports limit the head from breathing, but then again this engine was not designed for performance. I do know guys in the PONTIAC clubs that have made over 500hp. from this engine using Pontiac 301 Trans Am Turbo charged blocks which have internal beefing. The best applications for replacement real Pontiac engines would be the 350- 400- 455 from 1970 to 1976 because they have all the things you need like 5 motor mount holes instead of the 1959-1969 blocks, also the 1964 389 and 421 blocks of the "B" body cars still use a trans mounted starter so you would have to look out for that. The 1964 "A" body 326 and 389 do have block mounted starters.
  13. 1949 and the very early 50's Oldsmobile was considered G.M.'s HOT car division. The 1954 F88 with it's 324" V-8 is the car G.M. should have given Oldsmobile the green light on instead of the six cylinder Chevrolet Corvette.😉
  14. But she's not a period image of the 50's
  15. It is Marilyn Monroe, and it's her own Blue 1950 Pontiac Chieftain Deluxe 2 Dr. Sedan. It's the second car she owned. On the 20th Century-Fox lot 1951. interesting in todays world people consider her chubby. I happen to like a little something to hold onto instead of just skin and bone.
  16. What sort of a job was it that made you hate it so?
  17. If you've never seen a car before think about a first impression. If a car is presented as this car below it could completely turn you off for that make model of a car. So this car would be a hate for me; Now for a "like" car below;
  18. Yes, but if he used a 350 Chevy in his Buick he would turn his Buick into a Chevy. The engine IS the Brand.
  19. Yes, many manufacturers replacement parts switched to rollers. Sometimes you had no choice but to switch which is easy to do. Most of todays cars wheel bearings are not serviceable/cannot be cleaned and repacked with grease or adjustable. Many people don't realize this and the recommended replacement is 40K per service manuals.
  20. I would switch this topic to the BUICK section.
  21. Ever wonder what you’d buy if money was no object!
  22. There are two ways to interpret this; 1. Oh honey it purrs like a kitten 2 Oh honey listen to this engine, it runs like a dog. If I was in charge of the release of this add I would have the Spaniel in the foreground eliminated. I bet the Ford guys had fun with this add.
