Nobody knows what this is?

I can't seem to find any information on this piece. I even emailed Frank Fritz about it, but didn't hear back. I'm guessing it's from the 50s or 60s. I'm too scared to plug it in, so any input as to what this does, especially the glass slide out piece below the can, would help immensely.
