  1. Thanks Matt, the price is a little steep for me but I built the car to drive and if it’ll help save the engine it’ll be worth it. Steve
  2. $8.33gallon, yikes. Put a helium sole on that right foot. 😄 And I agree, changing the rear ratio is not the best solution. I recently did some touring in the Texas hill country and needed the 4.30 rear gear.
  3. I already have cost information, $3500 for everything needed and me doing the install. I’m looking for actual real world experience to see if it justifies the cost. I’m not aware of any over the counter ring and pinion setups for REO’s and with a whopping 80 horsepower the lower gearing is useful around town. Highway speeds would benefit from overdrive though.
  4. Do you have your original tank? If so here are two options, https://www.gastankrenu.com/ Gas tank renu, I have no experience with them but others report good things. https://www.rockvalleyantiqueautoparts.com/products.htm Rock Valley will build you a stainless steel tank using your tank as a pattern and they will make any modifications you want. They built me one for my REO.
  5. Changing the thermostat will have no effect on your overheating problem, UNLESS the thermostat is not opening properly. The temperature rating of the thermostat is the temperature at which it opens up and determines how fast the engine comes up to operating temperature, that’s all. I think you have a water circulation problem. You stated that the engine was boiling over and the lower hose was “just a little warm”. If the water in the engine is 212 degrees F the lower hose should be to hot to touch. You also stated the radiator “looks clean”, what does that mean? I’m leaning toward a bad radiator. Steve
  6. Well at least his description didn’t try to overwhelm us with all the virtues of his wonderful creation.
  7. I’m considering putting a Mitchell overdrive unit in my 32 REO. Does anyone have any experience or wisdom they wish to share for this or any other overdrive? Thanks, Steve
  8. Location? Pictures of engine.
  9. Thanks for posting. Another reason to go to Auburn.
  10. Thanks Paul, all my hard lines are new cunifer. One would be very difficult to replace now that the car is assembled. Is it ok to use the alcohol on the flex lines?
  11. Got ‘er done!! Thanks for all the suggestions. I filled the tank with water and left the hose in the filler neck with the water running. When I drilled the holes the running water pushed the shavings away and off the tank. Very little made it’s way into the tank and flushing it out a couple of times gat it all out. Then I took the easy way out and took the tank to a nearby radiator shop and had them solder the plate on. Next step will be to finish cleaning up the outside and coat it with something. Tube level sensor in the new hole and fuel pickup and vent in King Seely hole. Original KS pickup missing. What’s the best way to get out any residual water? Alcohol? Thanks, Steve
  12. Paul, What is your recommend way to clean out the hard lines if I decide to change back to DOT 3/4? Steve
  13. All the DOT 5 I’ve used is purple although some brands are different. And yes DOT 3 & 4 are compatible.
  14. I’m not familiar with the battery setup on your R&L but is there a way to just tap off 6 or 12 volts to operate the lights?
  15. Thanks. 1933 REO. It does appear to have a coating. I’m going to try to steam clean it tomorrow so I’ll have a better idea then.
  16. I have to get the fumes out so I can cut the hole for the sending unit.
  17. This stuff seems to work good for me. Holds 30 psi oil pressure on long drives in 90+ F temperatures.
  18. I’m going to weld a plate for a modern fuel sender on my tank. What’s the best way to purge out the fumes?
  19. Same problem I’m having. Next time it will be DOT 4.
  20. Do you have a wiring diagram? Are you installing a pre- made kit or building it yourself? I rewired my REO using color coded wiring from Brillman. This allowed me to make some modifications. Added electric fuel pump, turn signals, and added a better fuse panel in a more accessible location. Except for the alternator it looks bone stock.
  21. I’ve used that one from Brillman and was satisfied with it.
  22. 1931 REO Royale has laminated safety glass.
