  1. Very nicely restored scooter, It was nice chatting with you the other night. I believe you said it was in a museum after restoration. Mechanical items like this can give you problems after setting for long periods of time. Good luck on your adventure with the Doodle Bug. Jonny D.
  2. I sure enjoy riding my new rider Doodle Bug with a little more power. I was afraid to ride my restored bug in fear of damaging it or breaking it. It also lacked the power needed to haul me around😐. My first long ride on the Boone River trail in Webster Iowa was fun and a good shake down ride for my new Bug. Some of the little screws that hold the side panels on came loose and some were lost. I will have to lock tight them I guess. I needed easy access to adjust the carb and never had them come loose on my other Bug. Another pic of before it was finished, I moved the brake to the left and put a twist throttle on. It seems a little safer when the throttle comes back to the idle position when released. Happy holidays Jonny D.
  3. Scooter is put away because of our Minnesota weather and back to winter project, my long term 1956 ford project. I work on it when I can enjoy it, I don't like to make work out of my hobby. I am not sure what I will do with it when finished, I have a older street rod that needs some up dating and tender loving care. Here is a pic. Later Jonny D.
  4. We went to the reunion and it was a great time, lots of scooters and old and young friends. Lots of riding, eating and chating. I brought some parts to sell and one of my Doodle bugs and sold the Bug and most of the parts. I did buy a few parts I needed to finish my rider Bug. Later Jonny D.
  5. The bug is running and I have had it out for shake down rides. That little 3 HP engine really runs strong, I myself would not feel safe with any more power. Did the pin stripping and installed the side panels, just need some decals, so pretty much finished. We will be off to Webster Iowa this week for the annual Doodle Bug reunion and am looking forward to it.
  6. Photos of of current build and it's alive but not ridden yet may need some carb tuning.
  7. The steel strap on the engine plate is made of tool or spring steel and is very tough, It was broken loose at one end and now is rewelded. The Bug is almost ready to ride now and is going to Webster Iowa this fall for the reunion. I will try to put up a picture at a later date. Yes I believe this scooter was probably Briggs & Stratton version. I do not have the original engine so will run what I have a 3hp Briggs. Jonny D.
  8. My new project, it will be a driver quality with a little more power (3hp). I think is an early 1946 frame with the steel strap welded to the engine plate rather than a formed rib for added strength ? It has a new down tube and some other frame repairs, a little more prep and then paint. All fun stuff Jonny D.
  9. Very nice find, it looks very original and only a few missing parts. Maybe a good cleaning and then decide what direction to go with your bug. Almost to nice to restore, they are only original once. Thanks for sharing Jon
  10. Nice find, what are your plans for it? You may want to check out The Doodle Bug club of America, there is a lot of info. on the bug and where you may fine some parts. They have a reunion every year and will be held in Webster Iowa on Sept. 15-18 2021. Jonnyd
  11. 2020 Annual Doodle Bug reunion coming up September 16th ---19th, in Webster, iowa Keep posted for any changes at wcdoodlebug.com jonnyd
  12. Annual Doodle Bug reunion this week and week end in Webster, iowa jonnyd
  13. I have found that the bottom of the main body of this style carb to be badly warped and will not seal and also the power valve may also touch the floor of the cast base. I remachine the bottom of the main body and spot face of the power valve sealing area. I then check the depth of the power valve recess in the cast base. To do this I screw in the power valve (hand tight) with the gasket then mount the carb base with out the gasket and check the fit. Machine the depth in the cast base as required this area needs to fit well as it seals the two idle well holes and the power valve vac. hole. The well in the cast base on the 06h seems be shallower than the newer bases and power valves can vary in hight. my findings, jonnyd
  14. Tom, The trip to the AACA meet sounds like a good plan to keep the Doddle Bug alive and well. I fired my Bug up and went around the block, getting it ready for the meet in Webster, Iowa. Here is pic of my first Doodle Bug, I think 1955. It was in pieces when I bought it and I just hot rodded it.
  15. Doodle Buggers Annual reunion Sept. 10 - 15 in Webster, Iowa. Jonnyd
  16. Doodle Buggers Is anyone working on or restoring there little scooters ? I had finished mine in March, but the weather has been snowy and rainy so haven't had a ride yet. I haven't even put gas in it yet. Since March I have resumed work on my long time project, a 1956 Ford station wagon. It is about 2/3s done. I really need to put gas in the Bug and get it running, The engine is fresh and I have run it on the bench and runs good except it hesitates when given gas. The carb has been gone through completely and I have another original carb that I have tried with the same results. I have timed it with the head off and bringing the piston before top dead center, measuring to factory spec. I think is 1/4". If anyone has a thought I would be grateful. thanks Jonnyd
  17. Shelly How is the hot rod Doodle bug coming, any pictures. Jonnyd
  18. Shelly I meet a fellow at a scooter and motorcycle meet in Humboldt Iowa a few weeks ago that sells parts for and rebuilds Doodle Bugs. He may have some new or used parts you may need or some good information to share. His name is Jim Juon cell #515-460-3854. It looks like you are missing the kick stand that could be handy while parking and some controls for brakes and throttle. Just a few basics and you could be up and hot rodding. Jonnyd
  19. Shelly, Have you found any more parts for your Bug? It looks to have been striped down and made into a little hot rod. What is your plan, build a rider or restore it? I restored mine and now I don't want to scratch it. You do have some important parts, frame, wheels and jackshaft. Scooter Man may chim in and have some good info and questions for you. Have Jonny d
  20. Very nice scooter Matt, It is probably a very small market and is a nostalgia trip for most. There are a few in museums that are well restored. It maybe the peak has past on these little gems and we may have to lower are expectations. I may have to just ride mine and enjoy it. I have a line on another Bug in a friends rafters, its been there for a long time, but may have to rethink getting it. Jonny d
  21. Back from Humboldt Iowa swap meet, I had brought some things that were related to scooters and cars to sell or swap. I had my Doodle Bug along and put a price tag on it to see if there was any interest. Lots of lookers but no offers or great interest. I did sell or trade every thing else. Had a table next to another Doodle Buger and horse traded a few things with him, he makes and sells parts for our Bugs, very nice fellow. Looking forward to the fall Doodle Bug Reunion. Jonny d
  22. All done, well very close. Just the fuel line, Hiawatha badge and a few other details. I hope to take it to Humboldt Iowa if the weather cooperates. It has a few details that are not correct like the top strip on the front fender. I have the strips pointing in the same direction, doesn't it look like it's going faster this way ? Ha Jonnyd
  23. I purchased this scooter at an estate sale in Minnesota. A friend of mine was helping with the sale and knew I had a Doodle Bug as kid and asked if I might be interested. Guess what, I bought it. I paid a fair price not cheap and not crazy ether. It had the frame, wheels with bad tires, handle bars, both fenders and the original 710ALSB Clinton engine with kick start. No controls, kick stand, jackshaft, gas tank or mountings. The frame had been badly black powder coated. Have since done every thing to get it into as close to original running condition as possible. According to Jim Juon , Vern ?, and Jim Kalua it is an original B model. It had the Hiawatha emblem but we could not fine the other badge with mdl info. This pic it the current status .
  24. Frame is now sand blasted, primed and painted red. Hope to have together for the Bike-Scooter meet March 22 ? in Humboldt, Iowa
  25. Thanks for the tip, I have contacted Fox grip and waiting for a reply. In the mean time I have painted my side panels and a friend has a striping tool he will let me borrow. I will wait a while for the paint to cure and do some practice striping. I have also taken the handle bars and front tire assembly apart. I have straightened the handle bars and tweaked the fender and are ready for paint. Wheel bearings are new as is the felt. This has been a fun indoor project with our cold winter climate here in MN.
