  1. Yeah, I suppose the customizing wasn't expensive as it wasn't extensive, mostly replacing rear fenders and side trim. Like i said, not bad looking but I wonder if it got sneered at as a "poor man's Cadillac."
  2. Not a bad looking car but if a person wanted a Cadillac, why not just buy one? Was the custom really that much cheaper?
  3. Or it could mean 30 years since they started converting horse trailers. But yeah, if they'd been around for 60 years, I'd think they would mention that.
  4. x3 on getting in/out of low-slung cars, although climbing up into one also is getting to be a problem. I bought a new Fiero which wasn't hard to get into and had enough room, but was so low I had to step up to get out. 😁 I'm pretty tall and wide and the first time I took it in for service, the manager watched me get out and said, "Wow, a big guy in a little car!" 🤣
  5. Meh. I couldn't care less if Google tracks my searches. But if that worries you, have at it with Donald. The point is the answer to the OP question can be found with an internet search using whatever engine.
  6. Mr Google is your friend. According to several of his sources, Pennsylvania offered plates with the car owner's initials as early as 1931. I guess that qualifies as "personalized."
  7. Yes, I know that is the law in many states, perhaps all. Even if I agreed with it in the circumstances you list, none of those apply in this case. Like I said in reply to a previous post, what you quoted is my opinion based on common sense. I'm painfully aware the law seldom is.
  8. What you quoted is my opinion based on common sense. I'm painfully aware the law seldom is. I don't leave a lot of room at stoplights (probably should) but I do on the highway. Invariably some asshole will blow around and cut in front, causing me to have to slam on the brakes. 🙄
  9. And yet like the rest of us, he dies and goes to one of two places. Wonder if either has old cars? Depending on the cars, it could be the good place or the bad place. 🤣
  10. Seems to me if the Mercedes lady slammed on the brakes for no reason in the middle of a green light, she was at fault, phone or no phone. I'd guess the cop just didn't want to fool with it. Anyway, you may never get the whole story from Hagerty. As others have said, their concern is the numbers, so here's a few. It will cost them $15K to total the car. They said the buyback is 60-75% so they'll be at least $3750 out-of-pocket. You have an estimate of $4215 for parts and outside labor. You said you could disassemble in "a few hours" and reassemble in twice that. You might offer to settle for say, $5K if you get to keep the car. You might point out they likely will incur some cost selling the car to a third party. Depending on what they can get for it, they may not recover the $1250 or more difference between your offer and their buy-back out-of-pocket. That deal would hedge your estimate, cover your out-of-pocket, and/or pay you an hourly wage depending on how many hours you spend on disassembly/reassembly. It may not be a high wage but since you're semi-retired, it'll probably be for time you wouldn't get paid for anyway. It also avoids a salvage title if that's a thing in SC. OTOH, if you don't want to mess with the hassle and/or keep the car, just take the $15K and put it toward another.
  11. Thanks but I'll stick to cars with an occasional ride in someone else's boat - still have to tear up $100 bills but usually don't get wet doing it. Besides, there's less danger of cars sinking. 🤣
  12. Can't help with the top, but there are some beautiful boats pictured in this thread. Course, the joke is a boat is a hole in the water where you throw money - much like old cars. 😁
  13. The "inspection" is just to verify the VIN on the car matches the title. DMV employees are authorized to perform it as are licensed dealers, Florida notary public, police, and tax collector employees; out-of-state dealers must submit verification on their letterhead. I know DMV offices take credit cards and personal checks. Many if not all county tax collectors also provide vehicles-related services. They may or may not take other than cash.
  14. I've had mechanical failures with several vehicles but I suppose the worst was in a 1930 Ford pickup. I felt the rear bucking and pulling to the right. I looked in the door mirror on that side and saw the wheel spinning out past the fender. The axle threads had stripped and the hub/drum was working off. As it was a Model A, I was only doing about 30 so I was able to stop before it came off completely. We hauled it home and re-threaded the axle a size smaller, kinda redneck fix but it worked.

  16. Just curious, how does the M badge attach? It has the little lug at the top, apparently to keep it from rotating.
  17. But then, they also call the hood a "bonnet." 😁

    Old hood

Yep. There are aftermarket Model A Ford hoods with doors instead of louvers, but they have two latches per side rather than the handle.
  19. I'd be afraid to drive one of those replicas on the street with all the idiots out there. But it would make a cool little golf cart for running around my geezer community.
  20. Me too. But to be fair, it's an upscale house on 18+ wooded acres in a wildlife preserve with mountain and water views - location, location, location! $70/mo is cheap as HOA fees go but the property taxes and insurance are killer.
  21. You mean Pappy O'Daniel? 😉 Another funny scene is crazy George 'Baby Face' Nelson riding on the running board of a 33 Ford, machine-gunning everything in sight, including a field full of cows.
  22. "O Brother, Where Art Thou" isn't a car movie but it has my favorite car scene - a center-door T crashing through a burning barn, driven by a kid in a leather aviator helmet, sitting on a couple mail-order catalogs (remember those?), and with wood blocks tied to his feet to reach the pedals. 🤣
  23. Your whole fotki site is pretty impressive.
