  1. I dont know if Buick used the same system. I had a GMC pickup with ABS and the front left brake caliper would hang. It was the ABS module. The computer wouldnt release the valve all the way and the brake caliper would stick a bit and get hot. We had replaced the caliper twice before we figured it out. There was a ABS eliminetor kit that we used to fix it since there was no ABS computers available just used ones that might also be broken.
  2. Owning that car is handicap enough. Im ok with him parking there.
  3. There are alot of guys on this page that have big Buick's like that Century your looking at and they will all vouch for how good they drive. In fact after reading several posters comments about the cars Im kind of looking for a big series 1940-41 Buick for myself now, hopefully a Century or even a Limited if Im really lucky (probably not though their hard to find). By 1937 or so the big Buicks were really good drivers with power and road manners that work on todays roads. Before then they didnt need as much speed because there were no highways and still alot of dirt roads. I think someone posted videos here of them driving there 41 Limited which will give you a look at what their like to drive and raved about how good it is on the road even after driving other cars. If it runs and drives you will like the Century even if it needs some fixing up. Dont worry about spending more than its worth that will be ok because you are having fun in the car. Get in and start having fun!!!!
  4. Price? Location? Will you ship? I have a Doodlebug with a Briggs engine but a Clinton is a rare find.
  5. Great-looking car, love the colors. Does the top go down? I always see customs with chopped tops and fake convertible tops that dont go down, essentially to turn a coupe......into a coupe.
  6. I called him and he hasnt taken it anywhere yet because his shop cant get to it for a week or two. Im going to try to go over there one day after work and see what else we can do. I think putting some fuel down the carb is a great idea and we will start there and see if its a fuel problem. Ill also ask him how he has the electric pump hooked up.......never thought of it stealing power from the coil before but that makes sense. But since it starts every time and then stalls out its probably fuel somehow. I wonder if his gas tank is clean????? I will do more checking and report back. We both thank you for all your help!!!!!
  7. Fortunately the Chinese cant import cars more than 5 years old or they have to 100 years old. They dont want to hurt their home car industry with overseas used cars flooding the market. I would think that even a crappy 57 Chevy would feel pretty impressive compared to what the junk their building in China might be.
  8. Six figure car when restored. Didnt one just sell on this forum for like $150,000????
  9. I dont believe there are any tarriffs on used cars that are already built. You should be able to bring it back in without paying extra. Probly a good idea to call a import broker and see what the real story is. You can find them pretty easy online and just call and ask.
  10. That seems like alot of car to me for $15k. Good color (most are black) nice interior and the big engine. Many parts are one year only stuff but that goes for alot of cars of the period so its not usually a big deal. Trim parts, a radio, stuff like that you can get. If it is mechanically sound that is the important thing because I think thats where finding parts can be tough for the 39's. Shocks are easy to fix even if you have to get them rebuilt. Ask yourself this question.......how long will you look for a better car that you like this much for less cash? A few dollars up front wont make a difference in the long run after you start fixing it up and you get a good car that drives good and can start enjoying the hobby right away. I always just get in and go and it has always worked out in the end for me. Plus this is a century not a special or super so its a better car for driving for the same or less money. Just my 2 cents!
  11. Welp we had no luck with it. Zip. The way he described it to me is just how it is. Starts right up runs for a few seconds then slowly dies. Pumping throttle sometimes helps but it always dies eventually. Acting like its out of gas but theres plenty of gas in it and it gets to the carb pretty easy. Electric pump fills up filter bowl almost instantly so fuel flows and gets to carb. Doesnt seem like an electric problem because it will start right up then slowly die out. Then it will start again when you hit the starter a second later. We can sometimes rev it up but sometimes it stalls before we can rev it. But it always stalls. So it has gas and spark. He still thinks vaccum leak because he said that sometimes the idle surges but if he messes with the controller knob for the power brakes it goes away. We couldnt get it up in the air to see the power brake booster or check hoses so maybe thats it. I still dont know how a vaccum leak could do that but it looks like everything else is working right. He did say that it drove perfectly to dinner the night before then he went to drive it in the morning and it was like it is now. He didnt touch anything and nothing changed. It HAS to be something simple. Hes pretty frustrated and says hes going to tow it to the shop and let them figure it out. I feel like I let him down mostly because I just stood there watching him fuss with it without being able to give any answers. I hate that. Hopefully he finds out what it is and its something simple. I just dont know what else it could be.
  12. I doubt they did it because they didnt have the right stamps. I think they used special characters so the numbers couldnt be altered or messed up because many cars were titled by the engine number. It probly was also part of warranty tracking even tho the warrantys werent very long back then. Also using I means that there is no confusion when you look at the number. It is always a 1. That looks like a nice car at a good price if its a century. Theres alot more in the restoration then the asking price.
  13. There was another Tom Lester car here for sale not too long ago. Did they do something special to the engines to make them run so good? Is there some difference they did on the cars that was unique to their shop? I love the Pierce BTW.
  14. Im pretty sure they do ask and thats why you cant get roll up windows anymore. Nobody wants that stuff and its cheaper and easier to make all the cars the same. Why should they waste time and money to engineer a car with roll up windows if only a handful of people is going to buy them? Its like asking why doesnt anyone make a good rotary phone with a cord these days?!?!?
  15. I have a friend in our local club with a 35 or 36 Packard sedan that will start but stalls out in a few seconds no matter what he does. Then it will start up again then stall out again. He has a electric fuel pump and he says theres enough gas going to the carb. He drove the car a few days ago and it drove fine but got in the car the next morning and it was acting up like this. No other changes. He thinks its a vacuum leak from his power brake booster. Could that be it? Do Packard's this old even have power breaks? It would probably have to be a really big leak. I'm going over there tomorrow to help him but I have never seen a vacuum leak make a car start but stall right away. Is it possible? Any advice? Thanks!!!!
  16. The girle men must outnumber the real men by alot because even Corvette's now come with automatics as standard equipment. As I get older I better understand wanting automatics in cars. I bet people were the same back in the 60s' and the 442 was not a cheap car for kids. Also if you were serious about drag racing a column shift car was usually lighter and cheaper than a console car so it would make sense to offer it.
  17. Anything is restorable with enough money.
  18. Western Union = SCAM!!! Every time no exceptions.
  19. Thats a very good looking wagon. I think the longer chassis makes for a better result when your building a wagon. Some just dont look quite right when their on a regular passenger car chassis. Very nice work!!!
  20. I had a chance to buy this one three years ago for $4,500.00. A few rust thrus on the fenders but it ran like new. Smooooooooth. New brakes and tires too. Could of probly put a new seat cover on it and drove it for a few years as is. Maybe I should of bought it?
  21. That seems like a heavy car for just a 6 cylinder engine to move around especially with a Fluiddrive. If its anything like the picture it is more than just a paintjob away from being ready to use. You will spend the cost of a paint job getting it running again and making breaks and suspension safe. Plus wiring. Plus radiator. Plus plus plus. It adds up. Take Rustys advice and buy one thats closer to running.
