  1. My daily driver for the past 19 years. I’ve put about 15,000 miles on it just this year. My 53 Studebaker is languishing in my garage due to lack of funds.
  2. I’m a furniture maker by trade. I love oil finishes. Sometimes I’d need something strong and more water resistant than just oil. I mix equal parts of gloss marine spar varnish and boiled linseed oil. (Boiled means it has driers added to it) Then I cut it with turpentine. The first coat is cut more than the next coats. I like the first coat to sink deep into the wood. The key to any oil finish is to wipe off the oil until the rags are dry. The varnish does not change the look or feel. It does help with water though.
  3. My 67 GMC had a 351 V6. The truck was a vacation vehicle and had an Alaskan camper and pulled an airstream trailer. I’m a carpenter and it’s now my daily driver. It no longer has the V6 in it. 7 miles per gallon and top speed of 70 downhill was all it took to change things up.
  4. I’m a huge Stude lover. Doing a 53 right now. I have to be honest when I say I’ve never been a fan of the bullet nose. But this is actually well done. It’s the rear quarters that makes it successful.
  5. https://www.undiscoveredclassics.com/ search this website. Lots of great stories.
  6. Looks like the trucks you’d see in the old Godzilla movies.
  7. In 1941, Exner patented Bob Bourke’s 1940 design when he was fired from the Studebaker account. Makes me wonder how many of his designs were actually his.
  8. My nephew is 29 now and I’ve tried getting him into older vehicles. He’s into 80’s and 90’s cars for kicks but really just likes modern fast cars. I’ve tried
  9. They put the Tri star on the early 53 C/K models. Mercedes sued and Studebaker removed the emblems early in on the 53 run. But it’s a good indicator of an early 53 model.
  10. I can’t argue with the Muppets photo! i loved those old guys on that show. I’ve been practicing ever since. Looking forward to getting a cane so I can shake it at people and mumble some unintelligible thing about kids.
  11. The Hudson Big Boy is on my list of trucks to own. I currently drive a 67 GMC as my daily driver. I’ve had it for 18 years. At some point I kept looking round for something else. I’ve always loved the look of these trucks. Maybe next year I’ll put out an inquiry to see who’s willing to part with one.
  12. Just today I took a piece of my truck to get color matched. Why? Because I know the name of my paint color but every time I looked it up on line the color was slightly different. Now I don’t have to worry about it. Automotive paint dealers have volumes of books to look through.
  13. Nothing a bandsaw and hand planes can’t do! (A little over simplistic with tongue firmly in cheek) If the wood is intact, templates can be made. If the wood is not intact but body panels are there, templates can be made. From there it’s all craft.
  14. Understood. I’m a furniture make by trade. I restore historic homes and I do work at the Gamble house in Pasadena as well as the Huntington library in San Marino. Wood doesn’t scare me but I don’t have deep pockets to do a full blown restoration on this car. I suppose I would be chasing a rabbit down the hole to try to tackle it.
  15. I can’t help but to think about getting her running and clean her up. Fix the structural things and drive her! Is this feasible with what you’ve seen with this vehicle?
  16. Beautiful car! I lived on Beech and Merdian for 8 years back in the 90’s. I’m now in Pasadena. I’m fond of Buick’s and Cadillacs. Although the Cadillacs are always unobtainable for me. Do you know if the motor turns over?
  17. Barry. The one in Louisiana has three pedals. I’d think about that because they don’t come up often. Automatics are the norm.
  18. I just sent this link to a few of my friends. I’ve been looking for a vehicle for my Austin house. If it had AC I’d be booking my flight to pick it up. AC is a mandatory option so says my better half.
  19. http://www.coachbuilt.com/ I find this site to be endlessly interesting and informative. I found that my former shop in Pasadena, where I made furniture, was the shop of Walter M Murphy. Thought I would share this one with you all.
  20. I’ve got the woodworking skills but I’ve got a project going. Too bad the timing is not right. Great car!
