  1. Its cleaner than when its was first opened. Some sludge in there on the top.
  2. Some debris found in the valley. A couple of dime-sized pieces of metal(?) were found in there.
  3. Here's the cracked head. Ouch. What caused this?
  4. We are going to try another compression test with manifold off. Keeping my fingers crossed. I'm Stateside. Anyone have an idea how much for a new intake manifold and a good place to buy one? I've been using Boos-Herrell so far and I like what I've gotten but I'm not sure if they have it. I took a quick look in their catalogue and I saw everything else but that.
  5. Lots of sludge in the engine too. The mount for the filter on top was cracked as well.
  6. After spending the last four months trying to get my 1938 Zephyr going, the crushing blow came today. The oil pan was dropped, cleaned, and put back. The spark plug wires replaced. Oil filter and oil sending unit was replaced. We put oil in it to test for compression. Something wasn't right. Pulled the intake and its toast. Doesn't look good for the rest of the engine.
  7. Maybe if you machined down a tack puller? They are pretty cheap and you could grind it down so its a little thinner.
  8. Mr. Butcher, your advice was a great help. We dropped the tank. It looks as though I may need to get a new one. There was quite a bit of rust inside and the dividing walls were corroded. It was a lot easier than we thought it was going to be--thanks to you.
  9. Thanks a lot! I'll let you know how it goes.
  10. How did you drop the tank? It looks kinda tricky. The way the neck goes through the frame and into the sleeve and then the actual tank, it doesn't look easy. I've got the car up on jack stands now but its looking like we might need to do it on a hoist.
  11. I really appreciate all of your insight. This all new to me but I really have a passion to finish what my grandfather never got a chance to finish. It will indeed be a beautiful day when that V12 fires up again. I had a chance this summer to see one running at Greenfield Village. Mr. Butcher rest assured that dropping the pan was the first thing my mechanic did. There was all kinds of mud in there. Its all underneath the car too because there was oil leak somewhere. I've been crawling around under there the last month trying to get it all. I am very fortunate to be working with a very thorough self-styled "driveabilty expert." I would not have gotten this far without him. There is however a long road ahead. It is a black 1938 Zephyr Sedan. Thank you for now. I may need your valuable insight in the future. The LZOC is very wonderful resource and I am glad it is here.
  12. I was told that if I wanted to keep everything original that a lead additive would be necessary.
  13. My grandad's 1938 Zephyr has sat neglected the last forty years. I have a good mechanic going through the engine. He has been working on it off and on the last five months and he's almost ready to turn it over. What kind of fuel should we use? Can we use regular with a fuel additive? I used vinegar to descale the radiator. Is it wise to do the same process in the upper engine or should we use some other agent? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
