  1. Matt, I’ve been wanting to tell you about the hood. Once you put the new rubber corners on from Ray, you really don’t have to worry about it, but I do because it can cause some serious damage if the wind picks it up and happens to fall off. I was at a Lincoln picnic and I saw some guy that had a broom handle sticking in his hood, it look pretty tacky and I thought what would look a little classier. I am a collector of vintage valve sticks probably have over 30 of them around here so I grabbed some that look nice, I carry two with me and I slip them in just like the photo. It has kept the hood from falling down and it doesn’t look too bad. And it might even start a conversation on what is that. I think it works well a little bit of insurance.

Sorry to hijack... It's fuel related... mechanical and electrical pumps both not functioning properly.

On my 33 Chevy every time I got 15 miles away from home it quit running. That was when I first got the car. It ended up being the fuel pump. Nothing wrong with it other than when you put a diaphragm in it you want to squeeze as much diaphragm as possible into the pump. Just laying the diaphragm on the pump and putting it together will allow the car to start and run and go for a while and then run out of fuel. It’s kind of weird so when I finally took the fuel pump apart, I compressed the arm to pull more diaphragm into the inside and then tightened it up. I have 7000 miles on that fuel pump. It works great no electric assist. You might try that it might solve your problem. I thought it was ignition for a while. Once again like you, AAA got me home. I don’t like doing that.

I forgot to mention I did the same thing with the Lincoln. I took off the electric fuel pump, threw it away and only have a mechanical pump. I probably have 3000 miles on that with no issues.

  3. Matt, I haven’t had time to read everything but that generator will un bolt and slide right out. There’s just one gasket between the generator and that front case. It only goes in one way I believe it sets on a key shaft of some kind. You don’t have to fool with timing chain or anything like that. All that stays in place, you don’t have to take the front apart. You don’t have to take the engine out. I’ve had mine off once and it wasn’t too bad, I’m old and I didn’t need a cherry picker. And I want to say the water pump was still attached to it when I did it. Maybe I’m stronger than I think.

I should add I had the car on the lift so I’m thinking I dropped it out the bottom. But I did not drop it. Two people would be the best.

  4. Hi

A friend of mine has a 1925 Dodge touring four-cylinder. He’s having some starter issues. Apparently he had sent the starter to someone on the northern west coast and they change the brushes. The starter turns over fine by itself if you take the spark plugs out of the engine it will turn the engine over, but as soon as you put the spark plugs back in, it doesn’t have enough to turn the engine over, just a click. And that is connecting it directly from a battery to the starter bypassing all of the other cables in the car. do any of you know of a knowledgeable good source that can rebuild that starter? Or any suggestions on what that might be. It does have a good ground and like I say, going directly to a battery to the starter will not turn the engine over with the spark plugs. It will with the plugs out.

    PS

The car is located in Central California South of Stockton, Tracy. It would be nice to find somebody semi-local.

Lynn,  tsk tsk.  That JN Duesenberg is owned by the Bahre family since Bob passed away.   If you knew anything about Bob or his family you would know that is tremendously unfair

Well, unfortunately, I don’t know anyone that owns a Dusenburg. My experience in the last 20 years of going to Concours is, when I see a high end car and I go visit the owner to talk to him about it, there’s a 99% chance it’s not the owner it’s someone who takes care of the car does it off and the owner shows up later that day. It is what it is. I would’ve liked to have met Bob.

  6. You know, I would rather have your car, than either one of those two. More than likely they’re just trailer queens and more than likely their owners only know how to write a check. But you on the other hand are a hands-on type guy and you thoroughly know the inside and out of that Lincoln. And if something happens to where you have to adjust or do something on the side of the road, you’re going to be able to do it, chances are they won’t. Anyway, don’t sell your Lincoln short. It’s a great car.

  7. A few pages back there was a discussion on rear view mirrors, I cant remember who suggested this suction cup type mirror but I have to say it has been the best $20.00 I have spent in a long time.  My Lincoln coupe is really hard to see out of, especially on the right side.  I stuck this on the passenger window and have driven the car probably 400 miles of more and it's fantastic!!  I can see very well on the right, I can even park it! Sooo Thank you!!

As for the 2530 bulbs (50/32 candlepower) that @AB-Buff is recommending, I use them too but I use new production ones because I drive the car enough I don't want to burn through a bunch of NOS.

That’s pretty interesting. I have bought the new ones from China on Amazon and I tend to burn them out, even had a couple it didn’t work out of the box. So nothing like good old made in the USA even if it’s 70 years old. I’ve had the two in there for a couple of years and they still burn bright and haven’t had any issues. I do carry a couple of spares, but I haven’t had to put them in. Maybe I am just fortunate?

it’s an easy fix. Make sure your reflectors are in good quality of silver or I had mine aluminum coated not quite as good as a perfect silver but they don’t oxidize. There’s a guy in Oregon that does it. I have his contact info somewhere if you need it. But, go on eBay look around for a little while and find some 25–30 pre-focus bulbs there 52 candle power. When you’re driving your car at night set your headlight on passing. I am wondering if you still have that feature. The passing mode is your left headlight stays on low beam and the right one goes to high beam. You can see fantastic. I don’t mind driving mine at night at all. See pic

  10. The same guy that bought his Fresno stuff sold what was in Niles. or moved it, he still has piles of stuff.  I'm sure a lot of it was scraped.  Too bad.  A lot of it was not marked and hard to identify, it would have taken years to identify the stuff and his daughter need the $$ and she was asking a lot for the inventory, If you had paid what she wanted it would have taken 30 years to get you $$ back so I think he just helped her sell the stuff and split the $$

The link on that business card goes to some Chinese place but I think the phone still works.
