  1. Are you going to make us wait and guess like you did with the last one? dave s
  2. I wish you success living in a bus in CT! The winters may get a little hard especially running to the outhouse if you don’t have indoor plumbing. Hopefully you can get the engine running soon. Driving a stick shift is easy once you get the rhythm down but a school bus can be very tricky on wet or icy roads. It may seem like a heavy vehicle but they are very light on the rear wheels and slide around on ice and even wet pavement. Take your time learning to drive it in big empty parking lots. Have fun with it and finish school! dave s
  3. Telephones, whether using for texting or calls should be disabled when the car is in motion. They do it on GPS systems ( or use to anyhow) why not on phones? They should also equip radios with a device that turns the volume down and admits a tone when an emergency vehicle is approaching with its lights and siren going. Maybe then people would pull over to give them access. I say this because I had a good friend bleed out in an ambulance that got stuck in traffic, the driver said he could not get people to let him thru and they were moving at about 25 mph. Technology may seem big brother like in many cases but there are ways it would help society be safer, especially from idiots. dave s
  4. The Forcht bank in Lexington KY has a way to use the fork.
  5. We purchased a new Chevy vega new when we were young and had very little money. It started smoking 3 blocks from the dealers lot. I took it back and they said drive it as that was probably oil in cylinders from assembly. Drove it for two days, checked the oil and it was down a quart. Took it back to the dealer and this time they said they would put a new engine in it. When I picked it up a week later I made it a couple miles from the dealer before it started smoking. I took it back and told them to keep it. They made me a great deal on a Camaro that I put over 150,000 miles on with out a problem. dave s
  6. I’ll would join you two for one night but I’m afraid we would be known as Moe, Curly and Larry from then on! dave s
  7. Great story and amazing group of people, kind of just shows you how kind good people are. I guess it also shows it pay to be lucky instead of good looking. dave s
  8. Too bad the genius at the head of Studebaker weren’t half as good as the designers. But I still like the style, design and drivability of my 38 Studebaker State Commander. dave s
  9. It may have a face only a mother can love but that’s not a reason to under bid to the extreme the seller will not even respond. If your like mom and love the style go for it. But go see the car in person then give a reasonable offer basis on what you see. dave s
  10. We had just moved into a house we built on acreage when a lady rode up on her horse with a plate of cookies welcoming us to the area. We had no idea who she was but there was a phone number on the bottom of the plate. We called it and asked how we could return the favor with brownies my wife made and put on the plate. The lady said she was going by our place soon and would pick it up. A very used station wagon pulled into the drive and the little old lady got out looking as someone that had been working hard. We noticed her license plate was unusual so we asked her about it. She and her husband loved Brookfield Zoo and any animal that is not adopted for upkeep they adopt. Her father started one of the largest banks in the USA. She had her 75th birthday party at the zoo and we were invited. These people have more money than I can imagine do to hard work and luck being born to the right family. They give back to not only the zoo but to schools, local food banks, the township and many other organizations. They have their named engraved in stone as major contributors to several museums in Chicago plus symphony hall and the opera house. The third and fourth generations are continuing to give like the grandparents. I would never call people like that filthy rich, if someone has a lot of money I am happy they can enjoy it the way they want to enjoy it. dave s
  11. Ed, if you are streaking in the house and a neighbor lady complains to the cops, when they come to the door tell them to arrest her. She’s a peeping Jane! LOL dave s
  12. Married 52 years (not sure why she puts up with me) and had one old car before we were married, an Austin Healy and 3 MGB's, a Ford F3 pickup and the Studebaker. Between these cars she put up with four Nissan Z cars and a Honda S2000. I feel very lucky to have such a lady as my partner. dave s
  13. I’m missing something in this discussion. To me, and I’m not being egotistical, it is the responsibility of anyone driving a vehicle (car, bike, truck, motorcycle or whatever) to drive within the law but more importantly drive defensively! Watch out for people, bikes, other vehicles it’s prudent for your own and others safety. When I see a jogger or someone walking on the side of the road I move over into the other lane as long as I can. If I can’t I move over as far as possible and slow down a bit prepared to slam on the brakes. I think Peter said he was walking his bike, in most states people have the right away by law, especially at an intersection. If I see a person waiting to cross the street, even in the middle of the block, and there is no opposing traffic coming and it’s reasonably safe I will stop and let them cross. It doesn’t delay my trip by much and it gives the person a safer crossing. Peter got hit by a person that needs to learn a few things before being able to drive a 2 ton lethal weapon. Hopefully he has insurance and stopped so Peter can get some restitution from the turkey. Peter, mend quickly and if this guy isn’t a member of AACA make his mandatory membership part of your settlement. dave s
  14. If it is truly a rust free or just minor rust you are comfortable fixing, I think the only consideration is the fact your better half is not too enthusiastic about it. Is there enough room for you to sleep in the backseat because that’s where you maybe for a while! Go for it my 38 was comfortable for a short stay. dave s
  15. A verbal agreement is still a binding contract in my book and maybe legally also. I personally would not do it because my word is my bond. dave s
  16. There would be no list. Only Bugatti. What about Studebaker ! dave s
  17. ... , it’s all over but the hangover ... ! Ed. hangover probably caused by drinking that Canadian stuff instead of good Kentucky bourbon like Woodford Reserve or Barkleys dave s cograts on the new house. how many garages?
  18. What John and Walt said but also have a big cheap cigar in your mouth. dave s
  19. Using Walt’s and others advice I found a paint shop that put a matched paint color of acrylic lacquer into spray cans when I rebuilt my 38 black Studebaker after an accident. I was able to paint it myself. I then used rubbing compound and buffed it out being very cautious not to burn thru the paint. It worked very well for a daily driver. dave s
  20. It was lot 137 but they are unique to a 38 -40 Studebaker State Commander or President. They won’t fit a Willys (willeees! Or Willist - now the debate can start again LOL) dave s
  21. Gunsmoke, the nuns I had as teachers in grade school used a wooden pointer with a rubber tip on them. They had a knack for being able to hit the edge of the desk and just barely touch your hands. It made a loud sound and just barely hit your hand. One time the great white whale ( large nun in an all white habit) did it to me and the stick broke. It whacked my hand and cut it. The nun was horrified and immediately took me to the nurses room to be bandaged. I could get away with anything in her class after that, still have a trace of the scar. Now back to our regularly scheduled car talk. dave s
  22. Yes Kerry, Friday is the new Saturday and that makes Thursday the new Friday and Monday becomes the new Sunday meaning you only have to work on the old Tuesday, Wednesday and half the new Friday, as everyone always tries to get out of work by noon on the last work day of the week dave s
  23. Maybe so George as they didn’t even have the make in the description. Just had antique headlight lens. dave s
  24. I was bidding on a pair of Studebaker State Commander or President Art Deco headlight lens. I was high pre-bidder until it went live another bid came in and the bidding was closed. The item wasn’t up for open bidding more than 10-15 seconds. That auction company was not doing the sellers any favors with closing bidding that quickly. I was prepared to go to $150 the winning bid was $80. Bummer. dave s
  25. Try to tell that to an English teacher wife! Not only had you better pronounce things correctly but you better have the correct grammar for your sentence. Her pet peeve when someone wants something and says — “Can I have ….” Only you know if you can. It is suppose to be “May I have ….” So may I please be excused from this exercise in futility? dave s
