    Bonding moments

I brought my Meadowbrook over to my parents house, like I said at the beginning of this thread, and I was talking to my mother while my father was doing some sanding to help me with my door. In the back yard there has been a 1957 Chevrolet 3100 since before I was born. My father used to haul rocks and stuff with it. It was this God awful faded yellow with the white grill and bumpers. He never really worked on it so it just sat there. My mother said that recently he has started working on it. I guess watching the progress I’m making on my cars has inspired him. I remember when I was a kid, maybe 8 years old, riding with him to get a loaf of rocks and we turned this sharp corner at the fire station and halfway through it his door swung open. Without missing a beat he held onto the wheel as he kept turning, leaned halfway out of the truck and closed the door. Every time I turn that corner I think of that time.

I took some time and flushed the engine through the hole. I know it didn’t completely clean it but at least it cleaned it a little more than it was. And I found a channel in the block that was blocked so I’m excited about the idea of it running cooler.

Every time something gets fixed another thing breaks, but that’s the “joy” they say. I had the wrong carburetor on the car since I bought it. So I got the right one and just rebuilt it. While I was testing it and revving the engine I saw the radiator hose collapse. So I finished testing the carburetor and turned the car off. That’s when I saw the steam coming from the engine bay. I looked and saw that I had blown out a freeze plug. So now I have to fix that before I can road test the car. I’ll clean the block out a little while the plug is out.

    A haunting question

My girlfriend and cousin were heading down a road that had an old insane asylum on it. It’s a pretty dark road and nobody was around us. As we got closer to the asylum all of a sudden these 2 round headlights, like an old car from the ‘50s, came racing up on us. The car got so close all I could see was the bright headlights shining in the mirror. Then out of nowhere the lights turned off. I thought it was some jerk messing with me so I hit the brakes. You could see the brake lights down the road but there was no car back there. And there was nowhere it could have turned off the road. I stopped the car and we looked behind us as I hit the brake lights, the car had vanished.

I have cleaned the draft tube and oil breather. It didn’t look dirty but I was surprised to see the stuff that came out of the mesh opening. I had heard from someone that they had a similar issue where the oil passages were clogged so I got sea foam and put it in the oil as it suggested. So far I haven’t seen much in terms of oil consumption and it may be coincidence but the smoke seems to have lessened.

    Seafoam Hydra Trans Tune

Ok, day one of the sea foam.. I put the pint into the transmission like it said and started the car. Before today I couldn’t get it to shift out of first gear. I had one day where it went to second but after that it wouldn’t shift again. So today I pulled the car out and stopped in front of the garage, put it in reverse and backed up a little then shifted through the positions in the transmission. After about 2 minutes I moved the car, mainly because I was bored and because it’s a little loud without the right exhaust on it and I didn’t want the neighbors whining. It immediately shifted into second. Online it said to drive it about 30 miles. Today I put on about 10. It wouldn’t get higher than second gear. I don’t know if the sea foam cleaned it enough to get it to second or if it was a coincidence. My cousin and his girlfriend came over later on in the day so I took them and the wife out to show them it shift. It wouldn’t shift out of first. Then after about 2 miles of it revving it clunked into second. After that it kept shifting into second. So I’d say my results are inconclusive as of day one.

    both flashers blink on dash

Cahartley, are you saying yours was a connection issue where the bulb wasn’t getting a good connection with the socket?

    both flashers blink on dash

I was always told that when both flashers blink it indicates that a light is burnt out somewhere in that circuit

    Seafoam Hydra Trans Tune

I’m pretty sure that when I put a replacement part on the transmission from a parts car it had dirt or something in it and when the fluid pressure came through the part it pushed the obstruction into the transmission. My hopes is that the sea foam will dissolve the obstruction and it will run like it did before I replaced the broken part.

    Synthetic Oil Question

I was asking more for my knowledge. I was told that mine should have it.

    Scam Alert

I’ve noticed that scammers have found their way into this site too. I was looking for a carburetor and got 2-3 messages here saying to text them. I don’t text someone the second they say hi to me, I’m a gentleman.. but I didn’t write them back on here and they didn’t reply. I made a thread about this just last week.

    eBay Motors

I bought my ‘52 Cadillac 75 on there last year. Traveled 10 hours each way to get it. I’d love to say that it worked perfectly for me but it’s not in my genes to have things go smoothly. If I could get it to shift I’d be driving it every day. When I did have the transmission working it went from 0-50 like a new car but much smoother. I competed with I think 3 bidders. My favorite cars are the ones that they sell on hemmings without pictures. Nobody seems to pursue them and when you reach out to the seller they are excited someone actually called them. I bought my ‘51 Meadowbrook that way. $800, only problem on the body was a hole in the floor pan.

    Synthetic Oil Question

Are there any synthetic oils that have zddp so you don’t have to mix a bottle of it into the oil?
  14. I can’t believe it... there are as many scam robots on this site as craigslist. I put a post in the Parts Wanted page on here and I have gotten 3 messages saying they have what I am looking for and to text them. I’m not texting somebody that I haven’t talked to so I message them back and they don’t respond. I looked at their profiles and they had all signed up a day or two ago. Is there a way to report members you suspect as being robots? When you try to look more in depth at their profile, luckily, my internet explorer won’t let me continue because of “too many pop up pages.” I never thought on this site we would be experiencing scammers.

    RTVing intake and head gaskets

I was always taught that you do not use any sealer on the head gasket or the intake gaskets. Due to them being metal they crush into the imperfect surface and create a good seal. But I was just watching a restoration show and they were using sealant on those gaskets. Whats the right answer?
  16. This is my first time replacing a pressed seal so I’m looking for some guide lines and tips. It is the pinion seal at the front of the rear axle on my 51 Meadowbrook. When I went under I saw oil sprayed in a straight light around the front of the axle. I called Andy Bernbaum since I’m going there Monday to pick some stuff up and they said it was the front seal. Is there an easy way to take it out? How about any lubricants/sealers for installation? I’ve never taken apart an axle, am I in for any surprises? I’m also going to replace the differential gasket as that leaks too. What’s the best way to clean the differential once I have it open?

The car pulls to the right even when the brakes are not applied so I’m sure it needs an alignment. I’ve been driving it for the past 5 years. I haven’t tried to clean the oil breather yet but I think I did when I first got it on the road. It’s probably due for a cleaning again. I suspect that I have a leak from the valve cover that’s under the intake. I can’t see it very well because it’s directly under the intake manifold. I stuck my phone down there and blindly took this picture.

    Rebuilding 1951 Dodge

I have straightened out the brakes and overheating. Well, the brakes hold pressure and don’t drag although I do need an alignment because it always pulls to the right. As for the consumption.. I can’t say it’s always because this was the first time but I have driven about 150 miles and put in 4 quarts of oil.... Whenever I travel about 50 for more than a mile or so I lose oil like crazy. When I decelerate it smokes. Could increasing the viscosity oil help that? I have been using a 30 weight lately. As far as I know the engine has never been rebuilt. It isles like a dream and it drives without problem. I figured I would bring this up and get some advice from more knowledgeable people so I don’t hurt the engine. This car has been my baby for 5 years. Before me the car hadn’t been on the road since 1973 and the owner before me wanted to rat rod it. I like it as a stock car that I can take the family out and about in.

Water Pump Plugged in My 49 Dodge Coronet

Based on the looks of the distribution tube it is probably rusted through so that would possibly need to be replaced. I’m not sure if the engine runs for any length of time but in my ‘51 Meadowbrook I powerwashed as much of the rust out of the block as I could, replaced the water pump, and flushed the radiator forward and backwards then put water in the radiator and a tub of wood bleach. There’s a lot of discussion about wood bleach on here. My car constantly overheated so I put the bleach in and ran the car for about 5 hours total over the next couple of days. Then I flushed it and repeated the problem. Now my car doesn’t overheat. I’m not sure about the mechanics of the wood bleach and correct me if I’m wrong but it seems to eat the rust.

    1952 Hydra-Matic Shifting

I broke the control valve panel on my ‘52 Cadillac. I took the one off my parts car, same year, model, and transmission, and adjusted the bands. The car wouldn’t shift out of 1st gear. So I took it back out and cleaned it. Everything moved perfectly and smoothly. Now it shifts from 1st to 2nd, but I can’t get it to shift to third. I’ve tried to adjust the T.V. rod according to the book and it didn’t help. I loosened the T.V. rod nuts so it didn’t create any pressure and that didn’t work. Am I missing something that I can adjust? I see nothing in the shop manual that talks about this. Any advice would be helpful. And yes I know that many people say to rebuild them whenever they have the slightest problem but I’d like to try to fix this in car before sending it out to someone. Thanks!

    Hydra-Matic won't shift

In my ‘52 Cadillac, Hydra-Matic, I have a problem getting it to shift. The fact is it won’t shift. I just replaced the valve body because the old one had a bent T.V. shaft. When I tried to take it out I snapped the front cover. After I put it in it wouldn't shift anymore; prior to replacing it it would shift 1-4. I was suspicious that it may have been dirty after I installed it even though it appeared very clean so I took it apart and cleaned it. When I took it apart and found that the T.V. couldn’t go in all the way because the piston inside was stuck. I fixed that piston and everything moves freely as it should. There is no dirt or sludge inside it. The bands were also just adjusted. I took it apart again and cleaned the governor and blew air into all the holes under the control body. But I can’t get it to shift into second. I get up to 15-20mph and the governor won’t let it go faster and it doesn’t shift. I’ve driven it with the T.V. rod connected and disconnected and still the same situation. Before I changed the control panel it didn’t have a T.V. rod and shifted 1-4. I don’t know what else to try and really don’t want to have to take the transmission out and rebuild it just yet. It reverses fine and takes off without slipping. I know that everyone on here likes the idea of rebuilding, and I do as well but I am on a fixed budget right now and can't afford to rebuild it and I don't really have the space to do in my garage. What exactly does rebuilding the transmission do that isolating the problem and repairing that specific item won't do, besides remove any chance of an item inside being broken? I appreciate any help. And please don’t say the transmission is trashed like I have seen in every transmission thread I’ve read. Thanks!

    Hydra-Matic won't shift

I worked on the transmission and got it to shift to 2nd gear but it wouldn’t shift to 3rd or 4th. So I took the control valve body back out and found the 3-2 Detent Plug stuck. I fixed that and now it won’t shift out of 1st again. Do either of those books talk about that?

    Hydramatic repair

Not to take from Bob’s thread but I put the control panel back in and it shifts to second. But I can’t get it to shift to third of fourth.

    Hydra-Matic won’t shift

I cleaned the control valve body and now it shifts to second gear. Will not shift to third gear though. I'm assuming that is linkage that has to be adjusted. I can feel it clearly shift into second gear.
