Good eye Tim!  In a world of look alike cars these oldies sure stick out.  While they may not be highly regarded by some...

    Terry

This is exactly how I became enamored with old cars back in the 70s. I fell in love with a 56 Olds 88 because it didn't look at all like what the other guys were driving. All the talk about attracting youth to the hobby sure is illustrated by the encouragement shown here! Go Tim! If this one isn't available, you can test the waters of research by following the threads provided above or picking up a copy of Hemmings Magazine and seeing what's out there. Window shopping is a great way to pass some time and learn a thing or two. (My wife and I had a well-used Maverick when we were married and it served us well.)

  2. When my dad was only about 10 years old, he would wait for the coal truck to come because the drivers refused to back up Grandma's narrow driveway. Dad would grab the phone book sit on, run out, and by leaning on the phone book and partially standing he would back the truck up the driveway for them! And yes, Grandma confirmed this as true and not one of dad's "enhanced" stories!

  3. I've laid up quite a bit of that wainscoting and know that you can lay them end to end if your lengths aren't long enough and those butt joints virtually disappear when the finish is applied. Historical buildings may look like all the boards are full-length, but there will be lots of end-to-end joints. That adds a bit of character and shows it's the real stuff and not plastic or faked plywood panels. I'd cut around the blemishes and make lengths to correspond to the structure and go for it! Just a suggestion...

  4. My first car at 16 years old in 1977 was a 1951 DeSoto Custom 4-door. My first high school car that actually ran? A 1956 Oldsmobile Rocket 88 in 1978. One story from that occurred after a football game. My "tank" as it was referred to was the primary transportation to pizza and a buddy of mine was racing me to the car when I saw that he planned on jumping on the hood. I yelled for him to stop but it was too late and that rocket hood ornament cost him 8 stitches to his inner thigh! It was a great car, nonetheless!

Australia is the only country in the world where we have an Annual Holiday for a Horse Race. The first Tuesday in November is "Melbourne Cup Day". Because this is always a Tuesday it seems un-necessary to go to work on the preceeding Monday, making it into a four day weekend.

I had to smile at this item. Here in Delaware, Ohio (USA) we have the annual Little Brown Jug Race which is one of the jewels in the triple crown of harness racing. Although not national, the whole area closes down (schools, some businesses, etc.) for race day which is on a Thursday making things susceptible for Friday closings as well. I used to kid my employer that we had to work on Good Friday but got a day off for a horse race! Looking forward to more Humber installments.

What about those Amish? They use the roads and pay zero gas taxes. No registration or inspection fees on their buggies either. (Written tongue in cheek,  I very much respect the Amish. We have several Amish suppliers.)

I was born in Amish country (Holmes County, OH) and I think they should be taxed by the amount of road apples left behind. It was a great place to live (really)!

Speaking of "SALT", did you hear that effective now, Denver is changing from Mag Chloride  to  "Brine", to be laid down before the snow comes.

Our area of Ohio started using the liquid brine a few years ago. They put it on the roads as a pre-emptive strike. The mechanics around here immediately starting seeing increased rust reminiscent of the 70s and 80s that they hadn't seen in a while. Exhaust companies celebrate!

Also, we have a '16 F150 4x2 sitting out front with a locking axle and nothing else. Advertised online, in Lancaster Farmer, and Commercial Truck Trader, and big painted price of $19980 on our lot. It's been here for a few months. Not trying to sell it (but feel free to contact me!) but it's a real life example of pure simple and pretty darn cheap, yet no one shows interest because they "need" 4x4 and a crew cab.

What kind of mpg does this truck get? My old faithful Ranger ('97) still gets around 25.
