Any tips on removing rust in the water jacket. I was thinking of installing the head then using a hose flush it.

I have three stones 45 30 and 60. They are from an antique valve seat grinding kit. Which stone should I use first

It disappeared when I used a wire brush and brake clean. Any ideas on filling the deck.
-
Good eye but it is just buggered up from my efforts to remove the valve. A tool probably slipped and gouged the deck a little. Hopefully the head gasket will cover it.

I can’t get a grip on the stem with vice grips. Should I file it so I can get a wrench on it.
-
Some progress. By using the tool I was able to get the valve to move partially. The tool (made in China) crumbled. I was able to get the valve to spin with the tool and a cheater bar. Unable to do so otherwise.

I purchased this tool, however the collets keep slipping or breaking. Is there something I’m doing wrong?

I can bring it to work. At work we have milling machines and a lathe. But I’m not sure what I can do at a shop that I can’t do at home.

The mig welder will not stick to the valve. I even tried to pre heat it with mapp gas. Perhaps the carbon content of the metal is to blame. Another possibility is I have the worlds cheapest welder. I tried to weld the nut first but it wouldn’t stick to the stem. I’m sure if I brazed it would stick but I’m out of gas.

I taped the valve stem and put a nut with jb weld on it. I didn’t hold at all. Perhaps there was some oil or it has been cold and needed longer to cure.

That will not work. I am looking for a stock motor.

There is nothing above the block.
-
If all else fails I’ll break out the welder.

I am located in central New York

I was able to tap the valve down and use a pry bar to move it up a little. After doing this twice I got very hopeful but it is still stuck. I got the bottom of the valve stem to clear the valve guide by a 16th of an inch or so. I’m not sure what is the best next step. I could either continue tapping it down and cut off the excess at the bottom. Or I could try to push the valve up from the bottom using a bolt or something. I could try to drill out the valve entirely, but I would need a stronger drill bit or I could use a carbide and grind it away.

Where are you located?

Because I use this car every day I want to have another motor ready for when this one gets tired

I will try to use the valve guide. If the new valve is too loose I can knurl the stem.
-
If the valve guide is damaged how can I replace it. Is it threaded!?
-
I tried to get it to turn with a pair of vice grips. I tried to cut above the marks. I’ll file it. Is there a way to press the valve up.
-
Should I tap and drill the valve. If I can get a bolt head on the stem it could be helpful.

I decided to do a ground up restoration on the car. I need to disassemble everything get everything down to bare metal repair what is needed then paint and reassemble. I’m going to see if I can get the parts car running and driving.
