After all you went through to keep it and keep it going, it's got to hurt some to give up.  Sorry to see it go and hope you're doing well.

    Hi Digger,

I’m doing ok. I have two cars in storage, the Ford and the Corvair. The plan by now was to have a property with onsite storage, but that has been delayed. It just doesn’t make sense on paper to keep paying the storage, especially since the price keeps going up. I don’t always do what makes sense though, often I’m ruled by sentiment. I run her regularly and am keeping her in good shape. I think of my dad with every drive and have mixed emotions about selling her. I figure if the right person comes along, it is meant to be. I priced her fairly and would let her go to the right person for that price.

I’m sure you all know if I was in a hurry to sell her, she would have been sold by now, just like the rest. I’m waiting for it to cool down here in FL and may take more pictures and properly market her for sale if the storage fees don’t stop rising.

    1957 Skyliner For Sale

Hello, I’m selling my Skyliner that has been in the family since at least 1991. Low miles and I have dated gas receipts my father wrote mileage on, so there is a log. My father was a collector and mechanic. This was one of his favorite cars when he passed in 2019, and I couldn’t bring myself to sell it. He had hundreds of cars over the years and I sold 10 of them when he became ill.
This is an older restoration that shows well. Original 312 engine. No rust and runs very well. Always garaged and spent it’s life in mostly southern states of California, Central Texas and recently Florida, with a short stay in Oregon. Not driven in the rain and the top works.
Price is $35,000. Additional photos and/or FaceTime tour can be arranged. Sold as is, located near Orlando, Florida, no tire kickers please and ask your wife’s permission before calling. I’m a fair seller, AACA & Skyliner members, and a few members here know me from some of the cars I sold in the past and/or have seen this car. I’m hoping to find a buyer that knows and appreciates these unique cars, so that is why I’m starting here. Please send a message with your cell and I will text you to schedule a call. Thank you!

    Matt,

Better to say your Buick was used by a Colonel or a Brigadier General. Anybody 2 stars and up aquired a Cadillac or a Packard. We owned a 1940 Cadillac V-16 a few years ago that was Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz' west coast car. It came out of Harrah's Collection. Also had a 1941 Cadillac Convertible that was purchased on December 3rd 1941 by an Army Air Corps Major. Who trained B-17 crews in Colorado. Some cars have great stories.

Fredericksburg, Tx has an amazing museum in honor of Nimitz. It was his hometown. It’s a great place to visit also!

Correct, but the seller could apply in Illinois before he sells the car.

Or apply in RI for a bonded title as a last resort to see if he can get it titled, if he already bought it. download?language=en

@Terry Bond this one is for RI. I thought it also posted a link but I see it didn’t. (I tried again and it’s won’t let me, so one needs to Google it.)

So far we've learned nothing about how RI handles the issue. Instead we've heard various (and often confusing) info about Texas, PA, NY, MD, even Australia.

Apparently you didn’t read my posts where I 1) Posted a link to RI bonded title info and 2) Posted a copy of the form.

The OP does not state whether

he is thinking of buying the vehicle

    or has bought it.

The OP states he lives in

    Rhode Island which has new

    vehicle title laws that went

    into effect March 1st, 2024:

Can someone explain to a hick living down under this whole title thing? I can buy a car from anywhere without any documentation and get it registered in my name by presenting it for an "identity check" where the numbers are run on a national database for its status as "stolen" or whatever. I would have thought you US guys would have similar.

    Steve

If you buy a car with no title in the US, there is no guarantee you can get it titled. It’s best not to buy cars without title, but if you already did, there is a possibility you may be able to title it.

The bonded title process mentioned above is the only realistic way I know of to get a non-titled car titled, at least where I'm at. There is some risk involved, though, and as I recall there's a fair bit of time that has to elapse before legitimate ownership is certified. Less stringent states might have a wider range of options.

Bonded tiles should be viewed as a viable option only if you've already purchased the vehicle, i.e., as a last resort.  Don't knowingly buy an untitled car thinking you'll get a title through the bonding process. If you've already bought the car, this can be a learning lesson for you going forward.

    Agree 💯

  9. I literally posted Illinois’ bonded title process above. I’ve obtained titles for cars before. Depends on the state’s laws, what documentation you have, a vin inspection to prove it’s not stolen, and a bit of luck and persistence.

  10. I can’t wait to get my ‘63 Spyder 4 Speed Vert running and take it for a spin. I come from a family who had Corvair’s as long back as I can remember. I have found the right person for the job and am on his waitlist. Nader just makes them more fun to talk about.

My grandfather, who was an engineer, had an Ultra Van and was always working on Corvair’s. I went to several Ultra Van rally’s with him and my grandmother. He wrote tech memos for the Ultra Vans they still use.

My dad had a Rampy, Greenbrier and the ‘63. Here’s a pic from the 80’s (bottom), and a recent one of the same car.

Collector cars and other collectibles are considered tangible personal property. So when they're sold for a profit, capital gains tax is owed by the seller. Tax at the federal level is 28 percent, while state tax varies depending on the residency of the seller.

    28 plus 14 = 42..

    It s#ck to pay taxes..

Yes I have looked into it.. That is why I still have the Darrin s..

Here is why they sell a car to give the money to a Charity..

One other approach is, rather than selling the collectible, donating it to a qualified charity. With this route, you'll receive a charitable-giving related tax deduction rather than a capital gain. The exact amount of the deduction will vary depending on what the qualified charity does with your collectible.

Keep maintenance and other receipts to andd to the basis and don’t forget the step up when you inherit, assuming the estate you inherited isn’t in the millions.

    So. How was the ham?

It was good, but not worth the trip to ER. 😆My son ordered it from some famous place. He was going to put it in the oven but got sidetracked and I thought I’d “help”. 🙄

We have a three year supply of leftovers in the freezer because “a whole one wasn’t much more expensive than a half”. 🤷‍♀️
