  1. I've rebuilt many Ni-Cad packs with Ni-MH, but as you say, charge them then remove the batteries from the charger for best life! I did the "upgrade" to get more use per charge (higher amp hour ratings of the new cells). The replacement Ni-Cads will work as well as they did when you bought the tool if you buy the same amp-hour cells.

I did buy two cheap 18 volt batteries off Amazon to see and yep, cheap = not many amp hours. But, if you just need a Dewalt 18 volt tool now and then for a few minutes, then perfect.

Point I'm trying to make is; in 1962 you wouldn't have heard half or more of the songs they played in American Graffiti.    is

Must be a California thing. Richmond stations continued to play the 50s songs up into the 70s. I was listening to them when I was in high school. Then they were oldies stations to take over. 😉 The late 50s songs finally went away from the oldies stations in mid 80s there.

For example, if you listen to 60's on SirusXM take a note of all the songs they play. Take the top 20 billboard songs of 1960. You will find that these stations only play and repeatedly play the same songs over and over and only play less than 40% of the top hits of 1960. When someone says they listen to 60's music on those formats what they are saying is they are missing 60% of the songs we really listened to. Funny thing is their selections are not indicative of where the songs were rated in the ratings of the time.

If you think that's bad, the 50's are even worse. Try listening for a top tenner form 1950-1954. These stations seem to think the fifties music started in 1955.

Yep, that's why I never signed up after the initial trial period on the wife's car. Same thing over and over, just like the local radio stations. I have to seek out further stations, many low power FM  (LPFM) stations play a wide assortment. Since they are low power you have to listen on the web. My friend runs one in Charlottesville, WREN 97.9. He says they very rarely play the same song in a day. 50s to 70s is their range. But, as you say, 50s starts in 1955 right, Elvis?🤣

     I know, 5 months later I reply. Ha!😁

I even remember some putting newer tv’s on top of the old ones to keep using the stereo! Lol

I did TV repair back then at night, and it was extremely common to see a portable on top of the console I was called to fix. And then when the console was too expensive to fix I would be back to fix the portable in a year or two!

What is the purpose of having the front parking lights lit when the headlights are on when they are only needed when parked?

To have some light if a headlamp goes out. Safety. No longer a motorcycle coming at you, but a wide vehicle. But, they are still used as parking lights when you want them to, like parked on a side street. Not needed when moving.

Now three pages later, the real reason NOT to use "parking or marker" lights when driving is when it gets darker the driver will forget just the parking lights are on. I see this all the time in city and suburban driving. Only when the car gets out in the country does the driver notice he cannot see. Sure, you think, I'll remember, then the kid cries, the wife gets you in conversation, you yell at other drivers for flashing their lights at you (what's wrong with those people?) and finally, hey why can't I see the road, my lights are on, just look at the dash.....😮

I'd be leery of putting anything like a sealant over a fresh paint job.  I'd probably wait 3 to 6 months before doing anything.

And the paint manufacturer will confirm this! Paint needs to evaporate to cure, along with oxidizing and other reactions. Old paint recommendation was six months to a year.

  6. If I LIKED a collector/second/sunny day car I would never sell it because of fuel milage. It is Smiles Per Mile I want.  Do you hear of happy boaters complain of the cost to fill those fuel tanks on large boats? Or airplane owners? It costs money to enjoy hobbies. Period.

10 MPG. Just how many miles do you drive your collector (etc) car in a year? I doubt it is 10,000 miles. More like 1,000 or less for most people. That's 100 gallons so under $500 for most of the US for a year's enjoyment. Maybe soon close to $700 for premium in California. Just look what Europe pays! Cheap here!!!!!!

Does one also look at how many quarts of oil the pan holds? Oooh, 7 quarts, can't afford to change that every year....😲  I need a 4 quart car (4.5 for some models of Prius).

I just do not get the complaints. Of course I wondered how many people took a bath during the oil crises in money lost in car value just to get a better fuel mileage car to drive to work vs cost of fuel? I'm sure many would have been money ahead to keep their car. You have to do the math to get an answer, not seat of the pants "oh *&^ I need another ten at the pump".

The instructors were calling them marker lights because they could be used so others can better visually see your vehicle when use of headlights are not warranted or required.

And there is the flaw in your argument again. Repeating BAD advice does not make it GOOD advice!😲

If one wants to be seen, nothing works BETTER than turning on the headlamps.

If your instructor taught you to hold the car on a hill at a traffic light by riding the clutch, would you repeat that advice?

Again in the semi truck/trailer game there are marker lights. They are seen on roofs of semi trucks (and pickups that think they are semi trucks 😉) and sides of trailers. On passenger cars? No. OK, we do call them side markers on cars, but they are designed to come on with the headlamps, since they are part of the tail lamp system. We DO NOT call those red things on the rear of the car rear marker lamps!🤣

I can bring up that new vehicles have electrically applied parking brakes. How do they work in an emergency? Actually I would really like to know that, if I ever buy a car new enough to have them.🤔 But not for discussion here.....👍

  8. Have you tried using flux? That is what it is supposed to do, clean surfaces for the solder to wet to. There are two common types, the paste type from the hardware store for use on copper plumbing and such. That can be "acid core" aka contains zinc chloride. I would avoid that for decorative brass. Then there is the liquid type used in electronics, rosin is the ingredient, especially in the mounting surface mount parts on circuit boards. I would try this type first. Rosin can usually be washed off the part when you finish soldering. Hot water helps. Then there are the uncommon types used for brass, copper, stainless steel in HVAC work. Oatey, Harris and Superior are several brands. I offer these as suggestions, but without actual decorative brass experience, just plumbing, electronics and HVAC soldering.

Many legislators with common sense passed laws stating headlamps must be lit a half hour past sunset, and a half hour before sunrise, so to give drivers vision time to adjust to the changing light conditions still occurring after sunset and before sunrise, without being blinded by the light from oncoming headlamps.

That was the old rule in Virginia, it is now written as sunset to sunrise. And they say using your headlamps all the time is better.

If it was to allow eyes to adjust for changing conditions, then putting headlights on before sunset would be better, as the pupils are small then (in the sunshine), not expanded as they are when the sunlight goes away! 😉🚕🚒

I think police cars and firetrucks have way too bright of lights, as it is hard to even see the policeman waving you on or waving to stop you since all you can see are the lights. They should be taught to be lit themselves so other drivers can see them! Standing beyond the bright lights makes them impossible to see. 🚓🚒🚓

  10. No, the uninsulated hood vehicles did not have more paint problems than the insulated hood vehicles, and yes, same paint was used on all GM cars of the same plant. Ermine white was Ermine white, etc. ❄️

Yes, the hood insulation is for sound deadening. Same as roof insulation, etc, which is minimal on cheaper line cars.😉

it insulates engine heat from the hood surface. without it you could have some paint issues.

So the Biscaynes and Bel-Airs had hood paint problems? They had the same paint as Impalas and Cadillacs!😉

and I move my passenger mirror up until I no longer get headlight glare from cars behind me..

My truck does NOT have this feature, no electrics. And yes, it is a 2011 model. Buying used you get what is available .   😉    Just like my older cars do not have remote right side (nor most remote left side either) mirrors. Back in college I would tie a plastic bag (most were tan around here back then) around the left mirror for driving highways at night to cut down the glare. 🤣

Instructors made mistakes with that advice, using the "marker" lights only is for PARKING, not moving, when in motion, and lighting is required to be on, you should always turn on ALL lights (IE headlights and markers).

    Hey, we AGREE  on this!😁🚗🏎️🚕

They are PARKING lights, not marker lights, like on trucks. Cars are not marking anything.

  14. I can't believe the number of a$$#%^*& on here who purposely drive around with their high beams on! All civility is gone from your brains? You are the only important person on the road? And we wonder why "young people" feel so entitled these days. They learn for others showing how to do it.   Sure they may seem to be no brighter than the awful ones made today, does that mean you need to be mean?

As to the "no one flashes me so it must be OK", just how am I supposed to flash you when you are behind me on a two lane no passing road for miles?

I had a 1963 Rambler American that a drunk towboat cook drove into the Mississippi with only the trunk above water.

He gave me the car and I had it driving the next day. I drove it for 3 years without a problem.

Right! Back when cars were simple, no electronics except for the radio (or Autronic eye), getting submerged was just a clean all the water out of places it shouldn't be, refill all the fluids and drive on.

I worked at the Richmond Wastewater Treatment Plant and our electrical crew trucks included two new 1972 C20 pickups with ladder racks. There was a picture hanging in the hallway among other showing the water level from Agnes flood. The picture showed two truck ladder racks about 2" above the muddy James River water. They were sitting inside the Administration building garage at the time. Yep, those two C20s we had in the electrical crew. All the city did in late June of 72 was hose them out, drain the oil, fuel tank, tranny and diff, refill the fluids and hand them back! They were still going strong when Ieft in 1982.👍
