Imagine this....... It's a beautiful warm, sunny Summer day. You pick up your TC from a storage garage Drop the top, hop in, and fire it up. You're cruising down the freeway pushing 70 and life is good! Then, you feel something on the top of your feet Glancing down, it's black and heavy. You figure it's the lower dash cover, it's come loose, and it has dropped onto the top of your shoes. But wait, this thing is MOVING! it's Not a dash cover IT'S A FRICKING SNAKE!! WITH AN ATTITUDE!!!!!! ( insert emotional content here) A four foot long black snake !!! So you are driving 70 mph down the highway trying to keep from freaking out while a snake is fighting you trying to crawl up your leg and get into your shorts (insert sexual innuendo here). Trying to keep driving in a straight line, while looking for the nearest exit, all the while this hitchhiker has crawled under your drivers seat and is slithering all over your interior, trying not to have a heart attack.. Finally hit the next exit and pull off, and pull into the next parking lot where it is safe to stop and get out of the car, a McDonalds which is packed. Jump out of the car, and scream "Anyone want a snake?" Surprisingly, no one answers, but get a lot of stares. Open the doors, and Mr Snake makes his appearance in the Drivers footwell. (see photos) He is not content to leave by exiting over the rocker panels, he instead chooses to crawl into the fender well ( see other photo). A small crowd has now formed, and they spot Mr Snake now hiding under the car on the asphalt.. I hop in, start the car up, and back it up a length. But no one has seen snakey leave yet. So. I pull to another spot, and look all over for him in, ( especially the interior) under, and throughout the car, with no results. My wife arrives and follows me home, hoping to see if he falls off and drops on the roadway, No Sighting. We get home, and again I do a thorough exam, with no success. Could he still be in the car? Or, up inside the engine/chassis area somewhere? Or is it a better idea that he took off when he was under the car and we did not see him? What do you guys think?

So, what going on with this engine? inquiring minds want to know.........

Well, i can say " You were DAMN LUCKY! I had an alignment shop decades ago 'forget" to tighten several bolts on my front end after an alignment, and when I picked it up and was driving it home that night the whole frigging front end dropped out, causing the truck to roll completely over! I wasn't hurt, but after i crawled out where the windshield used to be and examined the wreckage it was obvious the most of the components were dangling or just plain not hooked up! Talk about incompetent workers!!

I have done this repair twice, and unless you are experienced in working with clocks or precision instruments you should seriously consider giving it to a specialist. it can be very trying to get back together.. it can be done by the gear suppliers too, I believe

That is LOW compression! I think you have the timing belt off a few teeth, Hemi, what do you think???

Have you checked this? if the plug fires, it will be enough to fire the timing light. And show where the mark is. Or isn't. I have used a cheapie neon light to perform this task. And, it worked. As far as compression goes, engine just has to be cranked for a reading. Try it, you might be surprised..

Have you checked it for adequate compression? Ok, you got spark, you got fuel ( start fluid) that's good... What about checking with a timing light to see if timing is correct, if it flashes in no 1 when you are trying to start? also, the correct placement of the plug wires?

Will it fire with starting fluid?

I have owned and sold several from $3-5500--I live on the East coast Most 8 valve models have gone for $3-4500 I sold A 79k mile one in VGC for 3200 A 16k mile like new pristine burgundy one went for 4200 Another with 56k miles in great shape only brought $3500 A rare 16 valve garage kept pristine model w/69k sold for only $5500 -should have brought over $10,000 I purchased my current 16v model in like new showroom condition with only 25k miles for $5500 Does the odometer REALLY have 34 k miles? they are known for locking up and not registering true miles. See if the tripmeter works-if it wont come off 0000 there is a problem. Especially look at the brakes-do they operate perfectly with no problems? If not spend BIG MONEY (1,000's ) on getting them fixed. Are the seats and other leather areas soft and in good shape with no stretching or splits and cracks? Again, big money to fix. These are the major things to look at, and others on this thread will be happy to add to them. If you go on Ebay there are two similar completed sales with a bit higher mileage for $1875 & 2850, which is what most have been bringing. Based on what you have represented, with an 8v engine I would value the car at $45-5500, and that is if nothing at all needs attention. A 16v may be a bit more. i think the seller is unaware of the current selling prices and what the car is really worth.

Would you believe..... That just about EVERY TC I have owned has had this same problem? And, I have owned many Ever had a caliper lock up when you were driving? Not a good feeling Cheap insurance to replace them all for another 34 years of reliability!!

You say you replaced those parts, but did you use OEM parts from a dealer? Yes, i know that they are much more expensive than some auto parts stores, but the quality is far superior . A new part may be bad right out of the box. has happened to me many times with aftermarket parts. Nothing beats oem. Period. FYI-my wife works warranty claims for a major heavy truck mfgr, and she tells me that parts from Mexico have a 50% failure rate-right out of the box from the manufacturer. HALF of the new parts are defective! What does that tell you????

Part A Have you ever considered sitting in the car the next time it rains to see where water is coming from? Get a few cold (or hot) ones, turn on the radio and have a relaxing time while patiently waiting for drops or small streams to appear on the carpets or perhaps under the dash or down a piece of trim. A layer of paper towels can be a great tell-tale indicator. A wonderful way to relax AND find a leak. Part B If your carpets are wet there's a great chance that the padding underneath is soaked and moldy, rotted or worse. One TC i owned had a strange funk in the cabin, which was soggy passenger side padding, that also really messed up some of the electrical wiring under the flooring. Plus helped the rust to accelerate . Remove the kick-panel molding and reach under to see. If its wet, prepare to remove the seats to get to it all, not a big job, but it will allow you pull out padding to dry, AND possible see where the water could be coming from. if you've got the time and desire, remove the seats and all of the carpeting and padding to really find out where the water is coming from. I have been chasing water leaks for nearly half a century, and they can be a real challenge.

Engine? There are no pics of the engine, maybe you mean the poor condition of the paint, ?

I agree with Hemi..I have enough trouble driving at my age I don't need the added distraction of additional noise !
