My grandfather was an avid collector of antiques and automobile memorabilia. He died several years ago, and I recently discovered three big boxes of hood ornaments in my parents basement. I went through them the other night and pulled out 5 or 6 of the more interesting ones. He made wooden bases for some of the ones in the best shape. I recognize most of them, but one is a complete mystery to me. It is a huge, heavy metal eagle (osprey? hawk?) that he has labeled "1919 Coey Flyer".
