Trying to find out the quantity of 10-W oil for the fluid drive coupler on a 52 saratoga. The coupler is isolated, no sump and no engine oil feed. Factory manual only lists oil quantity for a sump shared torque coupler for 10 1/2 quarts. No data for the fluid drive coupler only. 7 quarts fills it full but it needs a certain amount of slippage so that the carb unloader isn't always dumping and the slip allows for the best power output from the engine. Have been trying to get this info for years writing and calling all over the country. Not enough " old timers " left to remember the exact measurement.

There are two solenoids on the trans housing that controll shifting. You might try checking the solenoids for continuity. If they check out ok then try checking the wires to these solenoids for voltage. Also the fluid level is important as well. I have a 52 saratoga and have had experiences with these issues. Also there are switches on the carburetor that allow for shifting.

The factory manual calls for 10-W oil. Several trans shops said that either 10-W oil or auto trans fluid would work ok. The amount of oil is another thing. It depends on the system type. Manual says for a sump shared unit takes 10 1/2 quarts.
