  1. Right I’ve now taken the torque converter off and found the front oil seal seems ok a little soft , but I do have a small amount of surface wear on the converter flange shaft. Can these be replaced or anyone know the tolerance on these? My mechanic says it’s ok but not perfect. I’m looking at a better seal too a Nitrile rubber seal any suggestions on this and the flange greatly appreciated ?
  2. Thanks for the response, I have been following it but just wanted clarification in simple terms, I find the manuals hard to follow at times!
  3. Hi everyone just need a bit of help from you gurus. I’ve a leak at the front end of my Dynaflow trans on my 1951 Super Sedanette and have the engine out and now facing torque converter. See picture . Assume I have to undo all 26 bolts to get it off then it looks like a retaining clip holds the TC in place to get to the leak at the front of trans? I’m a decent amateur but going deep in auto box is scary. Will the leak most likely be the front pump and if so easy to see remove seal once TC is out the way? 🤞
  4. Some good shoutouts here I’ll get into my disi and have a play with it. Let’s see if I can find the issue! 👍 fuel is clean a fresh Jon
  5. EMtree I have replaced the distributor vacuum and it moves ok on suction and timing ok. Jade year it did the same then cured itself but now after winter layup started running rough again seems worse when hotter? Us that a clue to something ? Valves are fine I expect no knocking
  6. Hi both thanks for your help. First one I replaced all spark plug leads , however vacuum is something to consider. How do I check the vacuum I guess some sort of pressure gauge ? I’m not too techie but pretty hands on with these old beasts
  7. Hi can anyone help with my 56c that has a 263 cu in that’s running rough under load ? It starts and runs on tick over but once under power will not pull and misfires, has happened after winter storage but started every couple of weeks during that time. I’ve stripped all electrics - points plugs coil distributor etc and cleaned the carb in case of sticky old fuel ? What else could it be?
  8. That's good advice, I've come to the conclusion to live with the leak for now and wait and see if it improves or not before I strip out the trans. Thanks guys good speaking with you all. If any of you are over in the UK taking advantage of our weak £, drop in and come see us. Paul Y
  9. Hi all, thanks for your tips etc, I was running the car quite regular when it started leaking at the front of the T converter, but I had left it a week or so when I was tinkering around with my '49 convertible. I don't park on any slopes, pretty flat round where I live. What would cause a sudden leak, a build up if pressure somehow, the last thing I would want is to replace the seal fir it to go again I'm not too keen on running the Buicks on the roads much at this time of year as they start to salt and grit with a bit of frost around, I usually take them off the road until March/ April, but I feel I'll get the '51 warmed up and see if the leak slows a little before I embark on a strip down. Thanks Buick Racer for the link I'll have a look, it's great to have other lovers of Buicks to chat too, current club level of BCA U.K. it seems is non existant. Maybe I should try and get something going if they are not doing anything? Thanks again chaps Paul 5 hrs ahead of eastern time
  10. Hi John, thanks, not feeling lucky with this oil leak at the mo! Scratching my head wondering if to take the plunge and try and rip out the tranny or pay big bucks (£££s) to get a garage to do it....want to have a go myself but now thinking of trying a stop leak just to see if it works. Just love the rear end of the fastback ......yep lucky my wife loves them too!
  11. Old T, Thanks for the advice, not ever tried these stop leaks products, I have always been worried they might cause other seals to play up or some other issue. Have you or anyone else used them successfully? Thanks Paul
  12. Hi Pete, Many thanks for your reply to my question, I do use Bob's Automobilia for most parts so will try to get the correct front kit from them, hopefully the right one! Do you mean strip the torque converter and replace all seals in that, sounds a bit scary I'm a good DIYer but always steered away from internals of transmissions etc... I appreciate your comments about the 56S and I know I'm lucky to own two beautiful models of Buick, just love the lines and style these car have, far better than any Brit cars of that era. The 56S was originally from Florida and is in good semi original state, the interior is now all beautiful with original cloth seats repaired, new headlining, the bodywork is rust free but has old layers of paint that looks ok, not original patina sadly, but a respray might make it right or just keep as is? Car guys like the 51S it seems more than my convertible '49 56s, but I just love 'em both. I was a member of BCA some years ago but being based in England it was costly on postage and of not much benefit to me over here. Maybe I should join again? Any more ore tech info on the torque converter appreciated.
  13. Hi all, I'm Paul living in Shropshire, England and have owned and loved my Buick 1949 56c for many years, and for the last few years added a '51 56S to my garage, but I now have an annoying leak right at the front of my torque converter cover on my ' 51 sedanette. I'm asking for your expertise / advice on a few technical details before I tackle the 'big' removal of the dynaflow transmission. 1. If the leak is only coming from the torque cover (The 24 bolts area) does that mean it's the main rubber seal on the cover only that's leaking? It's easy to spot dripping out there after a run and drops a couple of egg cups full of trans fluid. 2. If I take the whole dynaflow trans out complete with attached torque converter is it worth separating the torque converter from the trans to replace any other seals even though they seem good and has been rebuilt just a few years ago? I'll be replacing the rear torque ball seals etc and spline seal as a matter of course but is it best to leave others? Appreciate any advice before I start to pull back the rear axle etc to get to the dynaflow- my winter job.... best Paul
  14. Hi Shadytree, great pictures and really want that #1022 fulton now I've seen this one! Do you know if I purchased any standard fulton it would fit the roof curve and width, I know they do adjust about 6 ins or so? Then I'll get a bracket made up to fix around the aerial. I was a BCA member many years ago when I had my first Buick ( '49 Super conv) that was before www. thing really took off..... Joining again is a good idea. Anyone got a good solid Fulton visor please let me know.
  15. Hi many thanks for your response, I saw your thread from a couple of years ago. Do you know which visors are the correct for our year, the make and other cars that may be the same? I thought about the aerial mounting and would consider if I can get one fabricated. I thought it was quite rare as this is the last year for the fastback, I'll look to upload photos somehow when I can. Please help with the sunvisor make much appreciated.
