  1. Hi Edgar and everyone, The method of setting the magneto to engage with the valve timing gear described by Edgar sounds a simple and useful one. However, I'm not sure I understand where the "gap of 3/8 inch between the armature and magneto case as seen when the magneto cover is removed" is. I have attached some pics of the Bosch DU4 I intend to use on my Hupmobile 20 and would really aprpreciate if someone could point out the gap Edgar is referring to. Any comments regarding the general condition of the magneto are welcome too! Regards to all, Andrew.
  2. Hi again, I pulled the magneto off my Hup and noticed that the drive sprocket was not "keyed" onto the magneto shaft. At first I thought this may be a problem but then I thought that maybe this would be one way of fine tuning the spark timing given that on these cars, the spark timing is fixed. Or would it normally have a key to stop the sprocket from slipping on the magneto shaft? I am strongly contemplating replacing this magneto (an unknown quantity) with one I know to be good and that has variable spark timing. Cheers, Andrew.
  3. Hi All, Probably a dumb question but after draining all the oil out of the crankcase, what is the best method to refill - pour the oil down the breathers? I must admit, I don't really understand he purpose of the drippers - if it is just to replenish leaks (as some have suggested on this forum), why not just add a bit extra in the crankcase? Cheers, Andrew.
  4. Thanks Karl - as a former Canberran, I'm liking the score at half time! (Got to be a bit careful tho as my wife is Kiwi...). Cheers, Andrew.
  5. Ken, Wow - this is exactly what I was after, thank you very much. I know of 2 torpedos here in Australia and they both have the brass caps (which I can get made in the town I live) but I agree the period ads do seem to show the aluminium ones. Again, thank you for taking the time to post the diagram - it has really helped me out. Regards, Andrew.
  6. Hi Everyone, My 1911 Hup Model 20 Torpedo is almost finished now but it has no hubcaps. From the many photos I have found of Model 20's, there seems to be a variety of hub caps. I was wondering if I could ask the folk hear to post detailed pics of their Model 20 hubcaps to assist me to make some drawings so I can get some fabricated. Thanks in advance for any assistance provided. Regards, Andrew.
  7. Thanks for the replies guys - I ended up pulling the studs out and that allowed the oil reservoir to clear the steering column OK. Karl, is that what you meant or does your reservoir tank come off easily with just undoing the nuts? Incidentally, why did Hupp decide to incorporate water passages to the water jacket in with the oil reservoir tank? Is it so that the warmth of the water keeps the oil runnier or just to make things needlessly complicated!!? Cheers, Andrew.
  8. Hi All, An easy query (I hope...). I need to remove the oil reservoir from my Hup 20 and, in order for it to clear the studs, it looks like I have to pull the steering column out first. My question is how do I remove the end of the column from the pinion? I can see it is keyed in the pinion - can I just tap it out? Or is there something else that has to be undone to allow the steering column to be removed? Thanks in advance for any assistance. Regards, Andrew Winter.
  9. Hi Karl - congrats on getting the engine back together and thanks heaps for posting the video. Now I know what mine is supposed to sound like when I get it going!!
  10. I certainly didn't mean to start any arguments about the relative merits of different carby's! On another matter, what type of lubricants to you guys run in your Hups? And how does the oiling system work? Prior to my first attempt to start the motor (since it was rebuilt - it was never started) what do I need to do. Thanks to all for you advice so far - what did people do before forums?? Have included a pic of my carby plus another shot of my car plus a picture from an original catalogue for those interested in the body style. Cheers, Andrew.
  11. Thanks for the replies David and Karl, I'm looking forward to getting this little car sorted. David, the car is fitted with a Tillotson carburetor (Model 75 - I think - it is hard to make out the stamping on the lid of the float chamber) which I guess is not original but I read on this forum that the original Breeze carbys are rarer than Model 20 Hups. So thanks anyway for the offer of the Breeze manual. Does anyone else run a Tillotson on their Model 20? Does CARS have a website? I tried to google it but with that name, I didn't have much luck! Karl - the first car I ever drove (when I was 10) was a Hup 20 torpedo! Regards to all, Andrew.
  12. Hello Hupmobile fans, I have just purchased a 1911 Hupmobile Model 20. It has all of the hard restoration work done and only needs a few items to finish it off. Things I need are: hubcaps x 4, linkage from throttle to oil dripper control, brake rods & clevis, fuel cap, upper diff plug. Has anyone got any of these parts that they would be prepared to sell? My car has a torpedo body which I believe is fairly rare - are there any other Model 20 torpedo owners out there? Have attached a pic. I am located in Northern NSW, Australia. Regards, Andrew.
