I cannot find what I did with it, but I was given the tweaked formula for Claret Mist that the Best in Show 1964 was painted by the guy who was the tech advisor for the ROA.  Sorry but I cannot remember his name off hand. But he tweaked the original color enough to really make that car’s paint pop.  I don’t think the pictures for ROA meets go back far enough in the Riview to have a picture of that car.  In the sun, the car was brilliant.

I believe that was Carl Blackard’s car. He had his own paint and body shop and did some work for me. Nice guy and very knowledgeable. I miss him.

  2. Over the past 30 years or so, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed driving several high-end German cars including Audi, Porsche, and MB but always on a 3 year lease so I can deduct the business miles and give it back before it breaks. The two times I made a purchase after the lease, the car promptly broke and was extremely expensive to fix. Of all the “business cars” I leased, the one I missed the most was a Jaguar, and after all these years, now I have one again. Ford really did fix their quality issues.

I have a 69 Riv and we are working on the fuel system. First we are going to see if the tank is good enough. Probably is. The sending unit was missing and the oil pump is defunct. I think this thread answers the question of what fuel pump to purchase. However, where do you get a sending unit. From everything I have read, it seems like the recommendation is to rebuild the sending unit and that there does not exist an aftermarket sending unit for the 69 Riv? Surely something new works. I know that Rivnut has a great You Tube video on swapping out the gas tank on his 69 Riv (which is probably one of the most beautiful 2nd gen Rivs I've seen). It seems like the sending unit he used looked brand new. Any advise is greatly appreciated.

Yardley has some videos of his ‘69 on his website and he may be able to steer you in the right direction. He is active on the 68-69 Riviera Facebook page. Or just try to find a salvaged unit.

  4. I have not replaced my body mounts; just a body-on-frame refurbishment of an otherwise well-preserved original. No excessive gap that I can see, although the door does sag quite a bit. New bushings are on the list.

I requested documentation from the Sloan Museum regarding 1965 Rivieras.  The cost was only $6.50, and for this they sent the AMA specifications for the car, a press photo of a '64 (oops!), and a PDF of a multi-page computer printout called the "DAILY CAR REPORT".  I had specifically asked the nice young lady at the Sloan Museum for the last Daily Car Report for Riviera for 1965, as it would list in detail the production numbers for all regular production options for this year.

I've only started to decipher this 4 page printout, which lists every possible option code (some I've never heard of before) along with how many of each were produced. The Daily Car Reports were presumably generated each day during the model production run.  The printout I got is dated August 24, 1965 so would presumably include production numbers for the entire 1965 model run.

I assume this report includes all 1965 Rivieras because it lists total production at 34586, which is in accord with other published sources, including the ROA.  Of these 611 Rivieras were listed as produced for EXPORT.  Interesting, huh?   Note that Rivieras were only produced at Flint, MI, so the totals under the "FLINT 40" column include all Rivieras made that year.

Now to the anomaly. Under option code M17  A9 (Gran Sport, it says 3355 were produced. The ROA website states that 3,354 Gran Sports were made. Hemmings web site and many others state that 3354 Gran Sports were made, so if this is an error, admittedly a small one, then it has been propagated across various sources. Note that the production number for option L80  A8 (Super Wildcat engine only) is cited at 3808, which is in accord with other published sources.

So, which is the correct number of Gran Sports produced?  Was the Daily Car Report superseded by another updated report.  Or have I found the missing Gran Sport we've all been looking for?  😉

So, if these numbers are correct then one of the 454 dual quad cars was actually a Gran Sport instead (3808 - 3355 = 453).

Nice. Can you give us some details about the car?

Thanks Ed. It’s also highly optioned and subtlety modified (hot rod motor, shift kit, MSD, new style headlight motor, powder coated and chromed bits, etc.). Saved it from hurricane Sandy. Never rusty, never wrecked. 5 year restoration. Very strong runner.
