  1. Thanks. I thought I would have heard of it before if it were something from the factory so must be an add on badge. Anyway if it was a badge refering to engine size surely there would have been badges on the front fenders.

  4. I saw a nicely restored sixties Mustang (maybe a '66) today and noticed it had a small metal plaque on the rear that said "408 Stoker" or "408 Stroker" (couldn't quite make it out). It looked like something original that came on the car but I wonder if it was just stuck on by the owner. Sorry I didn't get a photo. Any info on that?

  6. I saw this in a parking lot in Cali, Colombia today. I asked the owner (who was of course wearing a red shirt) what year it was. I thought he said it was a '54 but that doesn't seem right to me. Maybe he said '64 and I mis heard?
  7. Very interesting Checker, thank you. I wish I'd snapped a shot of the interior especially of any gearshift levers. I've always been puzzled by the front hubs.

  9. Yeah I wondered about the badging in English. It could even have been something stuck on by the importer to make it look "cool". There are actually a lot of Chinese trucks around but I think they're more recent. I wonder about Brazil.

Dave I came accross this from Carros Classicos which shows some before and after photos of some of his collection: || CarrosyClasicos.com || jscheib I haven't come accross any reference to kits so far but one source indicates that the very first car assembled in Colombia was a Studabaker constructed in May 1951 by a company called "Dugand Hermanos y Cía. Ltda" in Barranquilla and that they imported the oven from the US to cook the paint. That turned out to be a short term operation for lack of funding. Next was a Jeep CJ5 assembled by Leonidas Lara e Hijos which later became CCA which today builds Mazda and Ford pick ups. The biggest operation however was Colmotores established in 1956 which would build Austin big trucks and jeeps. The first truck left the plant in February, 1962. Colmotores is the largest car and truck assembler in Colombia today and many regard it as the first since the others were very small, halting efforts that quickly failed.

  12. Found this car in the village of Trujillo, Colombia. Can anyone tell me about it? It looks like it was registered in Cali. Same plates are on a car for it's life time.
  13. I owned a '65 Saab so I'm quite familiar with that "free wheel" feature. Fortunately you could lock it out for the steep downhill runs.
  14. In the 1950s it was a common trade practice for Colombia to exchange coffee for automotive products from countries in the Soviet Union. This practice often proved disastrous for Colombians who received vehicles for which there was no follow up service or spare parts, this due to unscrupulous importers who made a fast buck (or peso) and were gone. Most have disappeared altogether but I still see a fair number of old Zastavas, Oltcits, Dacias, Tavria, Skodas and Ladas as well as Aro, Carpati, GAZ and Uaz SUVs. Many of that latter are still in use as public transportation in the many mountainous regions with poor roads. Here is a list (not including big trucks) of vehicles brought in from behind “The Iron Curtain” in the fifties, sixties, seventies, eighties and nineties: Aro from Rumania, a 4x4 with 2400cc 4cyl motor arrived 1975 Carpati Rumanian version of Soviet GAZ 4x4 with 2200cc motor arrived late '60s Dacia automobiles based on Renault products, various models including a pickup version in 1973 GAZ the 4x4 Soviet Jeep with technical development by Ford sold from '65 to '69 Lada cars (Fiat) and a still popular small 4x4 with full time 4 wheel drive the Lada Niva first sold 1978 Oltcit Rumanian, licensed to build discontinued Citroen models sold 1993 to 1995 Polonez brought in as diplomat vehicles Polsky Polish version of Fiat 125 assembled in Colombia first sold in 1973 Skoda first in 1961 (a currently available automotive line) were Czechoslovak now under Volkswagen Tavria Ukrainian and used drum breaks all around even in the 90s Uaz 4x4 SUVs still serving as public transportation, Soviet sister brand to GAZ first sold 1972 Volga Soviet, came in by diplomatic channels Warzawa Polish, sold in '66 and '68 Wartburg East German imported in 1962 3cyl motor of DKW design?
