  6. Early Off-Roaders Vintage SUVs Featuring 50 Years of the Ford Bronco and over 75 years of the Jeep May 21 – October 15, 2016 Sport Utility Vehicles today are often more Luxury than Sport or Utility. Plush heated leather seats, automatic four-wheel-drive and power everything are the norm and often outsell the bread-and-butter sedans offered. Most never go off the pavement. “It’s as faithful as a dog, as strong as a mule and agile as a goat.” – War correspondent Ernie Pyle describing the Jeep. Years ago, it was a completely different mindset. Our world famous Jeep and the British Land Rover were borne from necessity. A military needed a rugged, capable vehicle to get from Point A to Point B when no roads connected the two. Farmers, ranchers, hunters and guides were desperate for something to reach places not on the map. Just ask Marlin Perkins from “Wild Kingdom”! Off-road traction and keen mechanical survival skills were more important than doors, heaters, carpeting or other ‘creature comforts’. The AACA salutes these icons and the vehicles begat from them. Ford GP-No.1, a prototype for a light, rugged four-wheel-drive vehicle for reconnaissance and other military use, was delivered to the Army for tests Nov. 23, 1940. Built by Ford, Willys and Bantam, this rugged vehicle became the Jeep we all know today. The first generation Ford Bronco, introduced in 1966, had a twelve-year run with a huge cult following and later became infamous as O.J. led the LA police on the world’s slowest chase. Diminutive offerings from Asia such as the Suzuki Samurai emerged as the icons grew in size. All told, these early simplistic vehicles changed the way the world traveled to the far reaches of the globe. We’re looking for some great SUV’s to be a part of this exhibit, maybe you have one or know of someone who does. Early Off-Roader Wish List • Ford GPW (Museum owned) • Early Jeeps/ Bantams • Jeepster • Early Land Rovers • Suzuki Samurai/ Brute • Isuzu VehiCross • Ford Broncos ( all generations) • Bronco II • Lada Niva • Mercedes-Benz Unimog • Pinzgauer • Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 • Lamborghini LM002 • Early Subaru wagon • VW Thing To visit the website page: http://www.aacamuseum.org/early-off-roaders/ Contact us at 717-566-7100 or at info@AACAMuseum.org

  8. May 23 - October 12, 2015 Who is up for a summer Roadtrip! Remember the Wagon Queen Family Truckster from National Lampoon’s Vacation? How about Carol Brady’s Plymouth Satellite wagon from The Brady Bunch? Do you have fond memories as a kid of riding in the back of the Vista Cruiser with a picnic cooler on the way to a family outing? If you do, you’re not alone. We at the AACA Museum do, and are celebrating those days before minivans, SUVs and soccer moms, before GPS units replaced paper road maps and in-car entertainment systems replaced ‘spot the license plate’ games and such. Call them station wagons, suburbans, depot hacks, or shooting-breaks, the origin of these utility vehicles became prevalent in the teens and twenties, but became very popular in the Post War periods of the 1950s and 60s. As America developed into a two-car family, the station wagon became the workhorse, taking the kids to school and summer camp, hauling the dog to the vets and transporting groceries. Debuting in May 2015, “A Family Affair” will showcase both familiar and lesser known examples of station wagons and the impact they had on family life. The AACA Museum has compiled a ‘wish list’ of the following cars, and is eager to hear from individuals with such examples willing to loan their vehicles for display: • Volvo P1800ES/ PV544 or other • Citroen DS/Ami • Chevrolet Vega • Ford Pinto • AMC Pacer/Hornet/etc. • Ford County Squire • Chrysler Town & Country • 1984 Dodge Caravan/Plymouth Voyager • Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser • Chevrolet Corvair • Mercedes 300TD • Rolls-Royce/Bentley/Aston Martin Shooting Break • Fiat 128/131 etc. • Edsel • National Lampoon Family Vacation’s “Family Truckster” • Checker • Variety of Woodies • Volkswagen Squareback etc. • Dodge Aries/Plymouth Reliant • Custom Mustang/Corvette/Firebird/? conversion • Nash Rambler • Studebaker Wagonaire • SAAB 95 Check out our website for a list of confirmed vehicles for our Station Wagon exhibit: AACAMuseum.org/family-affair-station-wagons/
