  1. Hi, not related to your original inquiry but I read this today and thought you may be also interested. Enjoy if so! China revives Red Flag limo in display of ambition | National & World News | KATU.com - Portland News, Sports, Traffic Weather and Breaking News - Portland, Oregon
  2. Saw these two almost literally out my front door (not technically "parked"). One of my neighbors has a similar 356 but it was fun seeing these two cars that appeared to be traveling together.
  3. I saw both of these items today while antiquing but didn't buy either one. I am curious what each of them may have come from. The clock pics are not great but it is a Waltham with Roman Numerals and the winder on a rod extending from the 6 o'clock position. The mirror has two base mounts so I feel it will be an easy one for some of you guys. Click to fully enlarge. Thanks!
  4. I am not at all surprised by the courtesy shown by those who replied, thanks for continuing to share your stories. I do absolutely agree that there should always be permission requested and granted before anyone sits in a car that is not their own, or for that matter even opens a door. At the same show I mentioned initially, I pointed out a Silver Dawn to a friend who is not car savvy and this event was only his second show ever as an attendee, he's 40, yet he still reached up to touch the grill face before another friend, his very first car show, advised that he should never touch the cars. Some people intuitively "get it" while others just don't. That fingerprint haunted me yet I was not about to try and remove it, again, not being my car. I had another friend who is fond of wearing elaborate jewelry and he wore a large pendant to an informal show and as he leaned forward to read the trunk badge on an Austin Healey, yup, "CLUNK" the pendant did what gravity demanded and fell to the trunk lid. Fortunately (?) it was a very rough, survivor car that had peeling paint, primer, and so on so I felt thankful he didn't ruin a costly paint job, but still I consider it a big mistake because surely the owner embraces his patina. My friend looked around to apologize but the owner was not present. He has never worn jewelry to a show since. If I have anything in my hands at a show, even a water bottle, I make sure to put my hands behind my back when viewing an automobile simply to spare the owner the anxiety of wondering if I'm crushing against their car, they can clearly see it's not a threat. A simple courtesy I like to extend. I should add that the Peter Giddings crew who brought out the Alfa gave simple and brief instructions to those interesting in climbing aboard about where to place their feet, what to use as grab handles when entering/exiting, etc. By no means do I intend to convey our cars should be a free-for-all and the story about the family sitting in the car eating chicken simply confounds me, I couldn't imagine that kind of rudeness or disregard for someone's property. I believe some people may confuse "Auto Shows" with "Car Shows", the former being where sitting in cars is encouraged by manufacturers who bring their cars specifically to get you to consider them as a potential purchase. I can however understand the confusion to the uninitiated.
  5. I just saw this post over at Jalopnik that seems to have started a lively debate similar to what we have seen here a time or two discussing if should kids be allowed to sit in cars at shows, especially historic vehicles. I made a comment that I will repeat here so you don't have to dig through that site to find it: "I just witnessed something similar this weekend with a 1935 Alfa Romeo Tipo 8c35 that as far as I can find is valued at around $8.5-10 million. It was at the Portland Historic races and Peter Giddings, the owner, was present and encouraged his mechanic to let people sit in the car all day long. Check out the 3rd pic in this article. I complimented him with, "I think you just created a life time car nut!" when that kid was seated. Everyone had a wonderful time and I can't help but feel that if somebody was there screaming about "preserve this car" it would have ruined the vibe we were all enjoying. Kids climbing over the leather with their dirty little shoes doesn't seem to have hurt the resell on this one at all, then again neither does the fact that this car is actively raced regularly. Personally I have a 1962 W111 Coupe (the hardtop version of The Hangover car) and I don't give a **** who sits inside it, what they play with or what they get dirty. It's a work of art and my most treasured possession, but it's still just an object. Memories are even more valuable." I also relayed a story, here I believe, in the past about being at the Classics for Charity event in Beverly Hills, CA and seeing another of my dream cars, an Iso Grifo in stunning red, and noticing a father place his kids inside so they could pretend to steer the car. As I observed I realized he was the owner of the car and was simply allowing his kids to enjoy it just like he surely does. Not to stir up an old debate but with some recent posts about younger folks not being or feeling appreciated or even welcome at shows, and with the show season in full swing, I just wanted to offer a little encouragement to try to be more available with your automobiles IF that's something YOU are comfortable with. It's ultimately a highly personal decision but I'd love to see more cars like these being used to build the next generation of enthusiasts.
  6. I found this old Panhard ad image on Flickr, can anyone tell me if this Daimler Double Six-style low roof line is actually how this Panhard was produced or is this another case of artistic license to make the car seem sexier in print? If this is legit, it's one heck of a design. I love it.
  7. Hi, I am also interested in State vehicles and motorcades in general so I searched images and videos for probably 15-20 minutes looking for any photos or info on the UK-specific visits. Oddly I was not able to find a single image. I found many of the most recent leaders visiting Hawaii, Washington DC, Berlin, Seoul, Italy, etc., but nothing in England. If I come across anything more I will post.
  8. I use the newer Sta-bil Ethanol Treatment (Note: NOT the standard Fuel Stabilizer) which can be harder to find but for the reasons Dave mentioned. It prevents the water from separating out of the ethanol which can cause to poor starts or failure to start, even with relatively new fuel. Dave's comment about storing fuel is pertinent in the sense that we have no idea how much water is in a specific fuel stations underground tank, in the truck that delivered it, etc., all the open space within could collect water through condensation before the tank is filled and that water gets absorbed into the fuel then goes into your tank where it will separate again in short order, which is exactly what the Sta-bil Ethanol Treatment prevents. I only had occasional starting issues before and have noticed my car starts better since I have been using it, no issues since I introduced the product. As far as mixing the two, I would contact each manufacturer and ask. Not worth risking the two products gelling or otherwise gumming up your fuel system if they are not compatible. Most mechanics will tell you stories about the mixtures they've encountered ruining systems over the years.
  9. I have found that an ionizer works the best. I learned about this trick from a Crime Scene Cleaner crew we were filming for a documentary as they use it to get rid of... natural odors of decay. (Now THAT is a whole other story!) The enzyme cleaners and other products tend to need full contact so you can really never reach all the spaces. I don't know if you can rent an ionizer but the one I bought is part of an air purifier and used primarily for home use to clean the air of allergy causing pollen and dust and it is a miracle machine in every way for me. If you decide to use one in the home be aware that many people say ionizers are not healthy to run while living things are present (people, pets) so do some reading about that and make your decision, or simply use it when you aren't home or indoors. In the car it would be fine, just wait a short time, 15-minutes or so before driving if you will have the windows closed. For the record I have never had any issues but of course everyone is different. It will get smoke smells out of a room, mildew from clothing, so far I know nothing it can't correct as far as smells. I have the EdenPure G7. It works a bit differently than most ionizers as it does not collect particles (dust, odor molecules, etc.) on a plate but rather disperses the ions into the air and attaches to the molecules, causing them to become heavier than air and fall to the ground in microscopic clumps. There are cheaper brands and I am not saying this is better or worse than the others, just happens to be the one I own because it has so many other features like a UV bulb that also kills bacteria, viruses, and the like, the standard pollen filters, remote control and so on.
  10. Many (if not all?) modern Mercedes still do.
  11. This is sad and troubling news. Kijiji is basically ebay classifieds if I am correct? Similar to Craigslist? My buddies father had a Mustang listed on Craiglist in Southern California and two men came by to view the car saying they would think about it for a day or two. Apparently one unlocked the gate while they were there and came back the next day, while one of the sons was home, and took the car without anyone noticing. We were all just happy the son didn't hear them as he's the type to confront someone in this situation, which could have easily gone the way this event did. I hate to admit it, but I sold my last car through consignment process at a used car dealership simply because I didn't want to deal with so many unknown people at my home or even meeting out somewhere.
  12. My contribution for today. These were found on my last two walks.
  13. Wow, you're right. Seems like they would sell for more given the size, maybe if it was a metal kit the value would be higher? My suggestion would be to make it into the Tom Mix car that West featured a while back, build it up and donate it to the AACA museum if they would display it. Alternatively, maybe the owner of the car would buy it from you as well.
  14. Pomeroy, I just wanted to express appreciation for your posts! You're really making this a great thread, thanks!!!
  15. Baz Luhrmann's remake of The Great Gatsby has computer generated Duesenberg throughout the trailer. I'm sure they used a real or replica car for close-ups but the driving was clearly too much to ask for such an old and valuable vehicle. I just found this great link on Hemmings, it also shows the trailer for the film at the bottom for comparison. New “Great Gatsby” movie trailer gives us first look at his (anachro | Hemmings Blog
  16. Went for a 2-1/2 hour walk today around town and saw this fine assortment. A Morris Minor with a Mercedes-Benz R107 hidden behind (had to include something for Steve), VW Karmann Ghia, Mercedes-Benz W108, and a Mercury. The Mercury's been permanently parked into the facade of a local business.
  17. You would hate Driving Miss Daisy then! Every time she gets a new car, one of the ongoing plot points, you see the wear in close-ups.
  18. I just got an email today that PayPal verified is a new type of scam. Basically the email contained some language we have used in the past on eBay and even our user name, tho it was an older one we no longer use, but the subject line read, "John Doe has rejected your invoice." The email had a link to PayPal which was suspicious even tho it looked like a PayPal web address and the site looked like PayPal, but there was a box for me to put my password in, which I did not do of course. They used a real person's name and email address, I traced those as well and he is a real person at a well-known company but surely has no idea his info is being used. They probably scammed him in the past and got his info too. I notified PayPal and they confirmed this is a scam, and I then searched the phrase "has rejected your invoice paypal" on google and there are apparently quite a few people who have been taken this way. The scammers get your password when you enter it into the fake paypal site and since they already had your email address, they are able to log in to your account and wreak havoc by buying things they ship elsewhere or changing your account info so your deposits go to them, or any number of things. The scam email even explained that you should always open a new window to enter PayPal, never follow links, which is the correct and safe thing to do even if the link starts with https://paypal... like the real site, but they rely on people being lazy and just clicking the link they provided. Unheard of! I know there was a lot of hoopla on a thread I contributed to about not naming people or companies, but perhaps a general scam thread is useful? Regardless, be warned and be safe! Also, not necessarily a scam but something to watch out for when selling on eBay is if you offer Local Pickup as a delivery option, we have had people select that who are actually having it shipped to them hoping we would not notice they removed the shipping charges. You can avoid this by either removing the local pickup option or making sure the payment you receive includes the shipping cost as well. [h=1][/h]
  19. This might be my favorite post of the year so far. Thanks, that was a fun and informative read. I have to agree with you on everything, all the same reasons you also never let a film crew use your house! I've worked on the production side and can confirm regular and sometimes extensive damage to cars and private homes because they are considered "props" or "locations." If the production is repainting your house or buying you furniture that you can keep then it's a judgment call but my family had a 71' Challenger we pulled from a film shoot because it was overheating. It wasn't worth the risk. The production is insured ideally but even then you're the one left picking up the pieces. Wise words and well said!!!
  20. This could turn into one of those happy accidents. The link you gave explains, "We are starting a fund to replace the hood ornament" and without this one being stolen, they would likely have never know it wasn't original. Maybe somebody will donate one and make it a quick and painless process.
  21. Sorry to hear this, but for others the tactic of an emergency sale or quick need puts us under pressure and causes us to not always take the precautions we might otherwise. Car scams aren't just online either, when I lived in LA I was out on the street cleaning my interior when a couple of guys in a work truck stopped and asked if I needed the small dent in the hood of my car fixed (a modern car, not a collectible) as they were out doing mobile Paintless Dent Removal for a client and happened to notice my car had the dent. I had actually just called a few places the week before about PDR work so this seemed like a convenient coincidence, so I asked a few questions and they seemed to know the right answers. We agreed on a price, fair but not so low that it sounded fishy and they said they would be finished in an hour. I went inside and when I came back out I noticed the dent area was covered in thick car wax and I asked why, they gave some crazy story about how you need to use this special polish to "set the dent" and if I tried to wipe it off before it dried in another hour I would ruin the work. They asked to be paid, so I said, "sure, let me go get the money" and I went inside, hooked my sweet but intimidating Pit Bull to her leash and came back out. I also brought a rag and wiped the wax off and the dent was exactly the same as it always was so I offered them three options; to leave immediately without any payment, wait for the police to arrive, or deal directly with the dog. They wisely chose to leave.
  22. You're quite welcome. Interestingly I just noticed on the very last picture, if you click to enlarge the full-car patent design, you can see the headlight doors were originally intended to be mounted on the highest portion of the fender and slightly inboard on each side, I think the final placement for production is much better.
  23. Did you ever find what you needed? I just noticed your search and here are patent drawings that may help if you didn't locate spares. Industrial Artifacts Review - Patents - automotive - HC Snow - Cord headlights 1938
  24. They still make and sell these things, here's a Consumer Reports article about some similar products. https://www.consumerreports.org/cro/2012/01/gas-saving-devices-tested/index.htm
