NEVER use WD-40 on any clock movement ! That product dries to a gum . It can only be removed with more WD-40 . Pay to have it overhauled by someone knowledgeable . Disassemble to clean properly . Polish the pivots and use good clock oil . Not 3 in one oil .

I love a mystery ! Remove the two coil springs and determine what is in the cylinder . Another coil spring or an air damper with a leather cup . It looks like a round head screw going into the end of the cylinder . Hoping to learn what you find .

Use a rivet gun and not an air hammer . There is a BIG difference in how they perform . I would recommend a 7X rivet gun . Lots of power to shoot the rivet quick . An undersize gun will not upset the rivet , just worry it to death . -

I have turned sockets down for clearance in the lathe . Grinding seems slow irregular effort . Best Wishes :)
