  1. Y'all are quick to reply. Thank you!

If I can get a rebuild kit that's what I'll do. I will call The Carburetor Shop Tuesday and order from CarbKing if I can.

It does have the Vac fuel pump / tank. I did rebuild and recork that and it does suck as I hoped. Gravity feeds to the carb bowl.

Will also re-check the seal from plug to head. With the plugs fouling again and again does that indicate I am passing too much gas up from the carb?

  2. Hi All, I am working on a 1929 DeSoto flat 6. I am having an issue where there appears to be gas bubbling out from the spark plugs. The car will start and idle (rough) with good plugs.

I kept cleaning the plugs and it would run for a while then foul the plugs. Got new plugs (AutoZone) and the bubbling is a bit more exaggerated. I've rebuilt the carb several times and adjusted the float. After a failed start (because of fouled plugs) she does piss gas out the bottom of the carb. Most likely gas that is being sucked up, not burning, and falling back down. (I have noted the recycle system posted by carbking elsewhere). Have done a compression test and all cylinders are within range (60 - 70 pounds each, warm).

Here is the rub; the carb is a Zenith 7066C. No rebuild kits exist and as best we can tell it is a tractor carb. Been talking to Mike's Carbs about it. The rebuilds I have been doing consist of cutting new gaskets, washers and cleaning all pieces. Things like plunger are a best effort.

I know this is kind of an off the wall one, but these barn finds are full of ghosts of restorations past. Am I looking at buying a new carter bb1 carb or are there any other suggestions?

And if I am pushed to a new carb, does anyone know the exact one for the 1929 DeSotos?

Thanks all. This is the final piece before I drive her down the road again.

  3. These torque settings are just what I was looking for. Before I start, any tips and tricks for loosening the rusted nuts? I am going to soak in Mystery Oil and apply heat if necessary but man, if I break one of the stems...

  4. I have a 29 Desoto K and just went through the whole brake system. The above guide by Kaiser31 looks pretty spot on with the minor adjusters and major adjusters.  If you can, I would recommend you try and save the wheel cylinders and rebuild if possible. I bought all new and they are a step cylinder, one side being bored smaller than the other. All 4 of my wheels snap to a good stop but when I have the wheels off I do see that only one side of the shoe is actually moving. I have also rebuilt my trans brake with a replacement part from oldmopar (fka Andy Bernbaum) and it is tight as new.

I havent been on here in a while nor have I put time into my 29 until recently. I have successfully rebuilt my vacuum fuel pump, and the clum light switch. I am trying to make videos and post of my progress in case they can help anyone.

I am a certified hack but am learning.

  5. Something I have never said before: "I just had a great experience with Bernbaum autoparts". But it's true. oldmoparts.com is under new ownership and Chris the new owner is very good. A drastic difference from my past experiences and many of us who dealt with the previous owner.

I felt compelled to spread the word. If you dealt with Andy before give Chris another chance. You may be saying the same thing.

  6. Well, if memory serves that is an original serial number. Plenty of resources on BING to trace down details. There were about 80k put in production that year. IMHO, $3800 is a bit pricey.

  7. Wanted to post an update on my restoration. It is going fantastic. My son and I have posted some video to youtube of us driving her around. I want to do a DeSoto Diary for others who appreciate the restoration art. This is a great Father Son project. In fact I just got my son a 1973 Harley Davidson Golf cart for his own project.

What has made this unbelievably great is that a friend near me has acquired a 1930 Dodge and is hot rodding it. Fortunate for me as I got the headlights, bumpers, and more from him.

This truly is near daily driver status now. I can go to the shop. open the vaccuum pump and start her up and take her out. I am 1 tail light away from an inspection sticker.

  8. The cowl lights are missing but you can see remnants of the broken off cowl light brackets.

    Hi Marty,

Any idea where one can get replacement cowl light brackets? I have the drivers in tact but passenger side is all busted. I have 6 (yes 6) of the lights themselves.

  9. Personally, I think it would look nicer restored like this:

File:'29 DeSoto (Auto classique).JPG - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    Just my 2 cents worth.

    Rod

This begs the question on this photo of the restored "29". Is it a 29 or 30 in this picture? I thought the 29 had a rear mounted spare and wood spoke wheels.

I was just out driving my 29 today and it feels great. I bet with a little elbow grease and back pain this car would run, unmolested. At $3800 purchase hat eats into the restore budget.

  10. Hi All, does anyone have experience with a vintage glass brake fluid reservoir? Specifically I just got a "vis-a-brake" reservoir from the 1920's.

If so, how does it vent? It mounts to the fire wall and gravity feeds to the master cylinder.

  11. After Kaiser told me what the switches sell for and how challenging they can be to find I rolled up my sleeves and dove into the trunk that I got with the car. I found my CLUM switch but unfortunately all the connectors were removed. After a trip to the electronic supply house I ended up with this. Hoping it works.

    Before and after attached.

I also have an e-mail out to the castings shop, thank you for that lead.

And last night I got a glass Vis-a-brake brake fluid reservoir off an ebay auction.

Thanks again guys. Marty, I looked at your site. Great work! I will e-mail you about running boards.

  12. Serial Number KE-223-D

Found in range KW-000-P to KD-999-D

    Serial 82239 of 99999

    Year 1929

    Make DeSoto

    Model Code K

    Plant Detroit

    Engine 6 cylinder 174.9 cu.in. L-head

    Wheelbase 109 inches

    FedCo Number KE-223-D

Thank you. I will go out to the shop today to look for the trailing circle on the block. When you say Serial 82239 of 99999, what does that mean? It is not the 82,239 one manufactured, is it?

  13. Interesting. I didn't realize that plaque had the numbers so I was looking behind the dash. Now that I see it (and I attached a photo) I see the numbers are "scratched".

But after magnifying the picture it looks like KE223D. Does this mean I have a 1930 Model Year?

Given the engine number I would also assume that is not original.

  14. Hi All,

I appreciate this thread on the 29 DeSoto serial numbers as I am having a very tough time identifying mine.

I will attach photos of all the numbers but the block numbers are: 82029 followed by 40829 2 with an "H" underneath.

    The head has 0836

The Body Number 329-16260 Briggs MFG

    Battery Storage "Willard C542"

The car is in splendid shape and was barn stored since 1959. I do have a letter from Chrysler dated Nov 15, 1963 congratulating the previous owner on getting one of the first DeSotos.

    Any help is appreciated.

  15. Hi All,

First time poster. I have in my garage a tremendous barn find in great condition, never mind having sat buried for 53 years.:)

I am in need of some odds and ends.

    Brake fluid reservoir

Light switch body on end of steering column

    Windows cranks

    Door handles, inside

    Running boards

    Wood spoke lugs or wedges

Not too much but appreciate any leads.

    /Sean
