  1. Congrats on finding the issue, and thank you for posting what it took to fix it!
  2. Studebaker did introduce an 'automatic' transmission in the 1942 model year, but only a handful were installed and those that were installed were 'recalled' and replaced with 3-speed/overdrive transmissions. I believe Studebaker called this transmission Turbo-matic Drive. None are known to survive. Back in the 1980s Clell Ballard wrote a great article in Turning Wheels about the Turbo-matic Drive. Perhaps the owner of this '47 Commander heard his father talk about it having "automatic overdrive"??

  6. Thank you Scott for the effort you have put forth to preserve this 'little' piece of history! In addition, thank you for posting this informative thread with all the great pictures, it has been very enjoyable to read and to learn from.
  7. Bumping this back up. Quite a bit of prewar parts have been spoken for, and the spreadsheet has been updated to reflect this. Thank you to those who have purchased parts.
  8. A question related to the Forum Messaging system, specifically deleting message strings from your inbox. Here is the scenario: Two forum members are corresponding via the forum Messaging system. Several messages have been sent back and forth on one string of messages. Then, member #1 deletes that Message string from their inbox. If the other member (member #2) sends member #1 another response on that same string, will member #1 receive that message even though he has previously deleted the message string??
  9. Very nice work! I'm glad to see someone else still uses the lantern style lathe tool posts. I have an old Logan lathe that I use a lantern tool post on. Will have to look for a tool holder to hold a small boring bar, like shown in your pictures.
  10. As one famous newscaster always said........."and now, the rest of the story!" Looking forward so much to the rest of your story Stude Light.
  11. So......I've kinda lost track here. Is this the first Pontiac you had gotten, or the one you bought recently?
  12. Good deal Gary! Looking forward to more updates as you progress on this.
  13. Jeff, as a temporary fix in small areas where the cloth insulation is frayed or missing, I've found that the brush on 'liquid insulation tape' works very well: Liquid Insulation Tape link It does a good job of soaking into the old cloth insulation, and also a good job of covering bare wires. Bare areas will need a couple of applications. It also stops the fraying of the cloth. The type I use is the Plasti-Dip shown in the link, but I would expect all of the various manufacturers' products are pretty much the same.

  15. Tom, you can just make additional posts in the same thread, then all of this will be tied together in one easier to find thread instead of multiple threads.
  16. Thank you SC38dls and Albtrossca for your kind words!
  17. Folks, I've had an overwhelming response on these parts, so those who have sent emails please be patient. You will get an response within no more than three days of sending your email. Thanks!
  18. Thank you for the kind words George. Yes, it did take a while to do, for sure!
  19. Just a few late '20s Henry. If you are familiar with the part number series for the '20s, take a look at the list. It has the lowest numbers at the top.
  20. I have posted a list online of over 1600 NOS Studebaker parts for sale. Pretty much all of it is smaller parts, but still items that are needed to restore and maintain a Studebaker. There are a few small chrome & stainless trim parts, but most are mechanical and electrical items. Except for a few used items, these are all New Old Stock (NOS) parts. There are quite a bit of prewar parts, lots of postwar parts, plus some truck parts, even a small handful of 'Detroit' Packard parts. The list is sorted by Studebaker part numbers, so you will need to know the part numbers for the specific parts you are looking for. Here is a link to the list: http://partsforsale.studebakerskytop.com Please take a look, and bookmark the site so you can check back for parts you may need in the future. Thanks, Paul

  22. Looking forward to more posts on this great old car!
  23. Bumping to the top, discount if you buy all of these Mopar ignition parts.
  24. Fully agree, with few exceptions (rubber parts for one), "NOS is best". Next best in my mind, for mechanical parts, is NORS parts of the same era, made in USA stuff.
  25. The block is looking good! May I suggest, if you haven't already, use a pressure washer to clean the block, especially all the oil passageways, as well as the water jackets. Also, a rifle brush cleaning set is great for cleaning out the long oil galleries.
