    1928 S-Type Buhne Tourer

    Engine: #68674   Komm: #39901 Reg: BYM244>9-449

    History

#35920 was delivered to Louis Delling/ Prince Hohenzollern in Dresden and he commissioned Glaser for coachwork in 1928. Its unclear what happened to the car but British dealer Bunty Scott-Moncrieff found it in 1935 and sold her to Peter F. Whalley in 1938. The car passed through various hands in the post war market for as low as 395 pounds. The car eventually sold to a Walter Stocklin in Maryland in 1954 and shortly afterwards to Leo Pavelle of the Pavelle film developing process fame before finally passing to Ed Jurist in 1970. John Riegel of the du Pont and Riegel fortunes found the car there in 1970 and bought her. After several decades of ownership DL George restored the S-Type while retaining its originality and finally in 2017 the family offered the car at Gooding Pebble Beach where they refused $5 million for it. Soon after the car returned to DL George and was refurbished in Black and in August 2021 will be a star at Bonhams Quail Lodge sale, estimated at $3 - 4 million. image.png.2e0a51ab16cbe5347c6ce26c4c52c45f.pngimage.png.dc65e0c33dc8556d95cafb86b65356f7.png

There has been some controversy if this great S was bodied by Buhne, Berlin or Gläser in Dresden, who did many fantastic Horch bodies. Has this been cleared up for the next auction?

    King of Afghanistan.

on a side note I’m looking for any proof that Jack Warner came within 10 miles of “his” car.

Where is the Afghanistan car today? You got a photo or S/N?

You mean the JW story is a myth?

Sold by H&H in 2006 for $414,600.   Attractive car but non Sindelfingen body with RHD is not going to bring lots of money.

Btw,  the car is a convertible victoria,  not sure how RM feels they can call it a roadster.  How many seats do we see in the overhead shot?

I think there are at least 2 500K cars by Windovers which are quite close in styling. One used to be in an Austrian car museum many years ago. Not sure if its the one that is sold. I agree its an attractive body, but obviously most want Sindelfingen body or a "big name" coachbuilder.

  4. Here are some great photos of a Longtail 540K Special Roadster in its final design with the covered spare. Probably built in 1938, the photos were apparently taken in Bucharest, Romania just before WW2. Anybody know the S/N and if the car has survived?

  5. This is a photo of a 540K Spezial Coupe, but it's RHD, so I guess this is NOT 130944, the car owned by Gen Lyons for many years?!

This seems like a picturesque '70ies resto job bright red with white wheels. Anyone know more? Is this a rarely seen 3rd car of this body style?

  6. OK, this is most likely the same car then. The description seems to be German also. This was one of the very few remaining Kompressor Mercedes in Germany during the early post war years. The car is still on display today in the museum (see my 2nd pic above).

  7. Real car. Late 20ies 710 SS type with Sindelfingen factory tourer body. Its not a one-off body, I think there are probably a handful of them still existing today. Here's the car displayed in the Deutsches Museum, Munich since the 1950ies.
