  2. I know nothing of your particular car , but standard flathead timing is best achieved by using vacuum gauge.
goal is to achieve maximum vacuum.

start at where you at timing wise. Adjust your air screw at idle to get maximum vacuum. Then advance the distributor to achieve even more vacuum ( if possible) then go back to the carb and tweak the air screw to see if you can more vacuum. Keep repeating this until maximum vacuum is obtained at idle.
then retard the distributor to get one column less of vacuum and lock your distributor.
if your getting between 18 to 21 of vacuum your engine and carb are in good in shape.
after that if your not happy check plugs and leads.
for compression you should only be concerned with even compression at this point. If not even do a “ leak down test “ and this will tell you if its rings, valves cam timing ect.
    good luck.

  3. Boy oh boy , seeing first pic with the 504. Does that bring back memories.
my dad was big on French cars. Had them all and lots of them. He convinced my grandma to buy a new 504 in 78-79 or so.
luxury to the 9th degree inside the cabin but, what a dog to drive. It’s by far the most gutless thing I’ve ever driven.
GREAT PHOTO’s and thank you for sharing.
PS, didn’t see any R17 Gordini’s in your pics. I got my first speeding ticket at 16yrs old in one of those. Amazingly fast car for the era.
thanks again. Good memories of dads French car phase.
