  1. I am looking for the all-knowing AACA judge who is the authority on Mercer particularly series 5. I am working on my axles and brake parts right now and would like advice as to which grease cups to use, the car was fitted with alemite 1/4 turn type fittings at some point but there are a variety of original grease and oil cups in the boxes that came with the car. The series 5 parts manual lists 5 different part numbers for grease cups but only shows photos of two of them. Thanks in advance for any help.
  2. I have a few rims that came with my Mercer that fit but do not belong, they are all rudge whitworth 80mm 124 spline lockring type wire wheels. 4 of them are matching 25 inch wheels and one is a 27" outer. I had a Model A Duesenberg front axle a while back that they fit but I don't think they went to that either. Mercers never used a 25" rim to my knoledge and I don't imagine anyone going to a larger wheel to make tires easier to find. I would also appreciate any leads on folks who might want to trade the 25" outer wheel and lockrings (and spokes) for a set of 23". I have no tires and would rather not buy tires for these just to turn around and buy more when I get the correct size for my car.
  3. hddennis, My 21 raceabout is sitting in pieces waiting for cleaning and paint. It would be very easy for me to get dimentions on virtually anything you need. If you are interested just drop me a PM. I just picked up my fenders last weekend so I think I have all the body pieces (and no need to worry about scratching the paint). TM
  4. Hi all, I recently bought a 1930ish model AA with intent to build it with a modern drivetrain, but then found a running (29-31 A) doodlebug for an un-resistable price that i thought I'd toss in to have a running but rusty AA. I started scrubbing the AA Cab to prep for it's donated engine but I was recently made aware that the AA would probably never be a streetable vehicle due to its SLOW top speed. I am looking for inputs as to which to do... Drop in engine and have a nearly complete AA dumptruck? swap bodies, re-lenghten frame, replace stock axle and have a nearly complete "A" closed cab pickup that needs a bed? Thanks in advance for your opinions/ inputs. (Either way I go I will be looking for a drivers door and a windshield if you know anyone in the CT area) TM
  5. 4HQ, I just picked up a 30/31 AA dump myself this past Friday. It is in considerably worse condition than your friend's but I am told by the local club that I got a good deal on it and they talked me out of modifying it in favor of restoring it. I am not in the market for another but would be very interested in the final price your friend gets for it to help determine the "value" of mine. I would also love to see more pictures of the truck to help inspire my restoration efforts.
  6. I have a contact who has a set of 4 buffalo wire wheels from a 29 cadillac, they are complete with everything from the wheel bearings to the lockrings. If they are correct for your project then PM me and I will give you the phone number.
  7. Asking those who knows: What is a reasonable price to pay for a "original unrestored" 1928 that has been taken apart but not put back together? What would be too much? I am looking into getting it soon so please help. Thanks, TM
  8. There is a IH metro van icecream truck on craigslist, look in Maine, autos for sale . Not mine, just saw it earlier this week.
  9. Looking good! nice work. Found you at : 1930's race car gains a new lease on life at Summit garage | NJ.com Got any more pictures from the way-back machine? I'm trying to find any pictures of Carl Smith's CC Smith-Mercer Special from the 1931 indy 500. I hear he raced it from 1928-1932. any leads would be appreciated.
  10. Got a pre-1924 duesy model a axle sitting in a box in my garage. What do you need to know. I have all linkages includung the arm that goes to the steering box. lemme know what you need to have measured.
  11. I got the old ones out finnaly, the right hand side looks like it was put on with a cold chissel and I ended up using a cold chisel to get the left hand one out due to a bit of buggered thread on the hub. I am going to be having some new ones cast locally. If anyone is interested in having a few made the foundry is charging $40 each to pour the metal I am planning on turning over the patterns in about a week or so. PM me if you would be interested in getting a few spares made for your cars. Unrelated question: I have 8 Rudge wheel nuts (round with "pin" holes, no ears) that need to be re-plated but 4 say "US PATS" on them and 4 do not, I presume this to mean 4 are older than their siblings. Which 4 are more correct to my 1921 Raceabout? I also have 3 or 4 that have thin pointed ears, any clues as to what vehicle they go to? (these are in very abused condition) I would also like any advice on where to go for plating work in the north-east.
  12. Nevermind, I found a local foundry that will be casting some blaks for machining for$40 per blank. Probably couldn't pry them out of acollectors hands for that price anyway.
  13. Frame is rough, rear axle has rot through on top, engine trany and radiator seem to be complete, brake linkages are all there. shock absorbers are off but available. Owner is looking for $700+ for frame for assembly and $300 per shock absorber. PM me if interested.
  14. I have decided to list the axle as being for sale, but it seems foolish to start a new thread for the same thing. Moderators: Is there a way to move this thread?
  15. Looking for Bronze piece that threads into the inside diameter of a set of front hubs. I am not certain of the interchangability between automotive brands on these items. The ones I am specifically after are for a 1921 mercer. Part number 10171 and 10172 (punched into the bronze after casting). Leads greatly appreciated. PM me
  16. Started cleaning up the oddball block this weekend decided to stop and take some before pictures. I know Hemp would have loved to see it and figured you all might enjoy as well. Not too much to see from the drivers side... The cool stuff is on the passenger side!! If anyone has a spare crank case, oil pan, connecting rods, 2 early style pistons they'd like to donate to the cause please PM me.
  17. Stude 8, Not quite what i needed but I am pretty sure I will be needing to have that one too. Right now i am dissassembling the front of my 21 raceabout for inspection/ restoration. To be more specific about the tool I am after...the part i am trying to remove is #10171 and 10172 on page 70 of the series 5 parts List. The machinists tell me not to use pipe to make a t handle socket (what i had planned) but to use plate metal of some sort as to better hold the 4 tabs of the bronze(?) piece. If you have plans for a known-to-work tool for this I would be very thankfull.
  18. My father tells me that the gentleman starting the maserati was my grandfather. He was one of the founding members of the SCCA and the official starter for the Watkins Glen races.
  19. does anyone have a wrench for the inner bearing seals? or designs for an "easy" to make replacement for the correct tool? Is there a trick to removing them? I have gone through several failed attempts at making a wrench for them.
  20. Thanks for the info! I have asked that question to the Montauk historic society, SCCA Historian, and several other sources with no luck! Where did you get the info from so quickly? Extra credit question: Who is the guy cranking up #53 in the photo?
  21. Back of the photo says "montauk point 7/6/40" I'd be happy with knowing who / what the #3 car is but wouldn't mind knowing all of them. ( id be extra happy if santa would drop them all off in my yard this year
  22. Fleek, thanks for the advice, i checked e-bay and craigslist and found that if I bought it and parted it out I could probably make a buck or two. I am considering it more closely now and will probably get it if I can sell some of my toys to pay for it. The wifey probably wouldn't let me have the $ for it from the account and I am still saving pennies for my project mercer.
  23. I have been trying to ID the convertable top that I removed from my grandfathers car. I found an oakland for sale and got into researching it and the photo's I have seen of the 27 oakland sport look to be very similar. I posted the pics in the what is it forum with no results. I'm hoping you can confirm or at least rule it out. My grandfather also built a trailer out of a 20's pontiac front axle (wood wheels) so I am thinking that this may have been from the same donor car.
