  1. Wanted: '23 Special 6 semi-finished piston(s). Machinist broke one. Will buy one or a set. -Jim connelley1@frontiernet.net
  2. Sorry, didn't take any pics of the front end of the engine during disassembly; and that was five or six years ago. My mistake. I do not know of the "service library". The mostly complete engine was out of a '23 EK. Don't know the origin of the other one. Seems very if not completely similar. The parts book, "Parts Catalog Series 23-24-25 Book 4" shows a picture on Plate No. 7 Models EK, EL Crank Shaft and Bearings. It is part no. 19802 which converts to Shaft Oil Throw ring. It is concave; made of lite steel like a large washer. No key way and fits over the larger diameter step in the crank shaft where the crank timing gear fits. I'm thinking, if it is necessary at all, that it must fit behind the crank timing gear between it and the block front main bearing cradle and cap. If so, then which way does the concave surface point. And, again there's no keyway slot in this piece. I'm afraid I have to admit that since I passed the big 70 my mind doesn't remember things like it used to. Should've taken more pics ! -Jim
  3. Hi all; I am assembling a Special 6 engine out of two. One a nearly complete engine needing o'haul and one parts only. The machine work has been done and I am started on the assembly process. However, I have one part that I don't know where to mount it. It was not in the nearly complete engine and was in the parts pile. It is a concave disk that looks like an oil slinger in the parts book. The hole in it matches the larger portion of the crankshaft just outside the front main where the crankshaft gear mounts. That gear has a key way, part of which notches into the tapered oil slinger before going thru the timing cover housing thru-which the balancer and belt pulley mounts on the front end of the crankshaft. Out of two engines I only have one of these. Since the parts book shows it I figure it is needed but can't figure out where to put it in the succession of parts that mount on the front of the crankshaft inside the timing cover. Any help would be appreciated. As this is a rather convoluted description, you can e-mail me direct at connelley1@frontiernet.net Thanks in advance.
  4. Am nearing completion of resto on '23 Special 6. However, do not have the cover casting or the impeller for the water pump. Would appreciate it if someone might part with one. Thanx connelley1@frontiernet.net
  5. Hi Hank22: Just checking in on the ASC forum and I find your list of parts needed. I have two '23's, one finished and one under re-construction. I have collected quite a few parts for this vintage of Stude and have some of what you are looking for. Specifically, a fan and bracket, enough inside and outside door handles, the upper throttle control lever and cover for steering wheel controls, intake manifold and one solid Budd wheel missing the lock ring. I live in northern Nevada so not too far of a trip. You may call me at, 775 778-9800 if interested.
  6. Does anyone know a source for replacement brushes for Wagner generators/starters like used on the 1923-4 Stude Special and Big 6's? Thanks, Jim Connelley; Spring Creek, NV
  7. Studeq: I am talking about the '23-4 engines. Thanks for the previous post with the spec sheet. It confirmed what I'd been told. So, I'm not sure what part isn't true but my thread is only relivant to the '23-24 engines and I am not satisfied that they did use the same block for both Big and Special in those years so their should be no problem boring it out from Special to Big specs. Right? Thanks again for your post of the Stude spec sheet. -Jim
  8. Thanks. I went to their website and saw the listing for Stude Special 6 pistons. It was the same as I had seen a year or so ago. When called, they say they don't stock them anymore but will make a forged set for me for $13-1500. A little too steep for my project. I have been told by a Stude guy that Studebaker only made one 6 cyl. block in those days and only the bore and head was the difference between the Big 6 and Special 6 models. I guess I need confirmation before I get the boring bar out. I have a set of Big 6 pistons and a Big 6 head of unknown origin. So, thanks again. And Happy Trails, Jim C.
  9. Thanks guys. I haven't checked Egge's out for about a year so I'll do that ASAP. Appreciate your experience, suggestions, and quick response. I should've done this a year or so ago but the project got mothballed due to by bride of 46 yrs. having some serious health issues.
  10. I have a '23 Special 6 whose block has been bored to 20 over. I have been over a year looking for oversized pistons for this engine. Egge no-longer makes them. However, I have another '23 that is a driver and the former owner stated that it was bored out and has Big 6 pistons in it. It also has the Big 6 head on it. Is that a viable option? It seems like a lot of boring. Will the block take that much and maintain it's integrity? I have an old set of Big 6 pistons that cleaned up pretty well and a couple of Big 6 heads that haven't been looked at by a shop, so who knows. Thanks for any input. JC
  11. Did you find any source for the '23 waterpump impeller? If so I am rebuilding a '23 Special 6 and it's impeller looks like someone started the engine with the waterpump frozen. Would like to know of a replacement source also. Thanks
  12. Needing the following parts for a '23 Special Six touring project; water pump, Speedometer with serviceable cable and sheath, old one was approx 58" long. Small hubcap with 2 9/16" thread size. (2) right side lug nuts. Thanks much
  13. Hello all: Does anyone know of a source for the soft metal channel that holds the glass in the windshield frame of at least the '23 Stude Spc. 6 Touring car. About 1/2 of what's in the car I'm rebuilding is usable and I would like to stay with original or a real close facimile. Thanks,
  14. Hi all: I am in the middle of restoring a '23 Special Six and the ignition/lite switch has one broken lever. I would be interested in a new lever. Please e-mail to: connelley1@frontiernet.net Thanks
  15. Need set (6) oversize pistons for a '23-4 Special Six. Preferrably .010 or .020 over. Tried Egge and altho they list cast piston sets they don't have any and can only supply forged pistons to order (Expensive!!). Anyother suppliers? Thanks for any help. E-mail me direct at connelley1@frontiernet.net
  16. I have two '23 Special 6 Studes, one with the bigger bore or Big 6 engine. I have collected a lot of extra parts and have a good (I think) transmission case, a couple of complete transmissions, and a bunch of trans guts. I could part with the case or one of the complete transmissions. E-mail me at: connelley1@frontiernet.net I am in northeastern Nevada. Hope this helps. -Jim
