  1. Selling a 1966 Buick 425 Nailhead Engine Core.  Block looks good, no visible cracks on the plugs or near the starter/bellhousing.  Is .030 over and will need to go .040, maybe .060.  Comes complete intake to oil pan, w/ good front cover, accessory drive brackets & ps pump core, good cyl head cores, rockers, valve covers, std/std crankshaft, connecting rods, etc.  I have a bunch more pics, but ran out of space on here to post.  Bores look rusty in pics, but are not bad, just light flash rust.  I already cleaned up some of them and have pics.  Message me and I can email them.  $2500obo and I can palletize and either drop off at Fastenal or you can have it picked up.  I have shipped a lot of engines, can help you set it up if you need me too.

  2. I have a set of 3 groove 401/425 pulleys and compressor bracket w/ head bolts.  I highly recommend swapping the front cover/front drive to the later 63-66 set-up.  It's going to simplify your life going forward as all the late 50's 364 stuff is nearly non-existent.  If you want to do the complete swap, I have pretty much everything.

  3. I had a custom shop buy a set of finned rocker trim from me for a 64. Looked ok, was a beige color and slammed on the ground. I don't think it would have looked as good if it had not been lowered. Color plays a big part in if looks ok or not, but overall I would not recommend it.

Thanks TelRiv, using just the primary throttle shaft from that 300 V8 LeSabre AFB was my intention. I was hesitant when the wrecking yard was firm on $100 (just for the shaft!) But, I was also thinking about a new Edelbrock Performer 1411 750 cfm with not only the old AFB top on it but also that Primary shaft. It's been a while, I think I have to grind the tip of those screws with a dye grinder. Okay to re-use those screws with thread locker?

    1. Would that AFB (4331S) primary shaft with the desired bell-crank fit in a new carb? 750 cfm a good match?
    2. Could anyone scan a page from the '65 shop manual showing the throttle linkage on our nailheads with that kickdown/variable switch? I have only 1963 & '64 Manuals.

Ray, TH-400s are not plentiful if you want the integral nailhead bell housing. Also, as mentioned here, there's simply not much room within the confines of the X-FrameFX (my handle LOL), ie: kinked speedo cable

    Thanks All,

    John B.

John, FYI, you need to port the intake to put a 750 on. I have done several, it's a huge improvement.  You do not need to swap the whole throttle shaft, you just need the end piece w/ the linkage attachment points which is just spot welded on. What do mean "swap the tops" ? If you mean you are trying to put the small afb top on a later afb/edelbrock bottom, that's not going to work. Just get a plastic $15 adapter ring and your stock cleaner will work.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback. I have some more questions:

Ed, have you installed your 2004R? Any problems or concerns if you have?

Dave, would like to hear the same from your buddy.

Rapon,  I didn’t consider Gear Vendors until your post. Could you post more on your experience with the unit, your likes and dislikes? Gear Vendor doesn’t post a copy of their operation manual so I’ve  nothing to go off of as to how it operates. Also how much modification did you have to do to get it to fit?  Did it make much of a difference in MPG for you?

A conversion to 2004R is looking to be somewhere in the $5k ball park what with getting one of the right rebuilders to set it up properly,  the correct convertor, adapter kits, linkage, etc. Gear Vendor’s unit is about the cost of a rebuilt 2004R. A rebuilt ST400 probably $1500 and all of the other stuff to swap from a Dynaflow gets the price close to $5k.

I’m looking to putting the best ‘upgrade’ in. TH400’s are a pretty tough unit and easy to rebuild. Seems to be a ton of them around. 2004R’s are getting hard to find and guys to rebuild them are thinning out too.

I was leaning towards the 2004R but a ST400 with a Gear Vendor might be a good fit with a 2.52 ratio as apposed to 2.16.

You don't "need" a Gear Vendors for what you want to do.  A 400 w/ a 3.07 or 3.23 rear gear will cruise at 80-90mph right about 3000-3300rpm. I have done many trips in my 64 Riv hammer down and have never really wanted overdrive. That being said, a 400 is a better trans than a 200, but if you have to have overdrive, the 200 is way better than a 400 with a GV.  JMO

Also, you are way overthinking the whole overall ratio issue.  #1 Nailheads have tons of low end torque and will pull off idle. #2 your overdrive final ratio is just cruising, your not accelerating in OD. If you had a stockish 350sbc or some other tiny motor, the overall ratio would be more critical, but given what you are trying to do, it's less complicated than you think.

  6. A friend of mine has 200r4 in his 65 Riv and works fantastic. The 700r4 is a garbage can of a transmission. Admittedly, the tech for them has gotten better and these days you can buy a decent 700, but it'll cost way more than it's worth.  If you are going to do a trans swap, it's either go 400 or go 200r4, everything else is not really worth it.
