  1. Hi warren

sorry dont check in to this site often and just seen your post

ive never seen the hays chaindrive white until now, my 2nd chaindrive white (5 ton model) came from bernie long in bloomington ca in about 2009, it had a large winch on the back and apparently was used in building construction work to lift stuff up on building sites

as for my whites i havent started on any of the chaindrive models yet but i have been working on the little 3/4 ton 1915 white, at present looking into buying new wheel rims and their hardware from a company in the uk that reproduces these, and i will have all new wooden wheels remade here in nz, appreciate your interest

    cheers mike

  2. The new top casting for the gearstick selector has just come back from the foundry , they used the broken original as a patern after tidying it up,

small progress but just trying to have all the jigsaw pieces ready before starting on the trucks restoration.

    thanks for sharing the pictures

  5. Looking for clutch and brake pedals and the shaft they are set up on for a 1915 3/4 ton white truck,

    thanks mike

  6. Hi AL

yeh got a few things happening, hoping to get permission to dig up an early autocar truck that was buried on a farm about 10 odd yrs ago

dont know why someone would bury a truck that old but who knows? could be worth the effort ?

apart from that still working on finding a few bits and pieces for my Libertys

  7. Looking for an early packard truck engine used from around 1910 to about 1914 these engines were 2 jugs cast in pairs,  monobloc type with the valve springs exposed on one side, used in the chaindrive packard trucks of around 2 to 3 ton in size, if anyone knows of something let me know please

    rhanks mike

  8. A bit more progress, ive hot riveted the two best centers into the donor rims i was given, also i have now found 2 original wheels that are on a farm trailer about a 2 hr drive from here, the guy want’s  some good 20” x6” rims as a swap which i can do as ive got some old ford rims off a heavy truck that will make good trailer wheels, still lots to do but soon ill be able to move the truck, also done some small sheetmetal repairs to the hood sidepanels, and removed the crushed rear crossmember, hope this is of interest?

  9. Hi all just an update, i have managed to free up the engine,

ive decided if i cant find wheels ill make them, the 2 front ones were in pretty good shape so they have been blasted painted and tyres fitted

the 4 rears ive removed the centres and a good mate has given me some better 20” rims which im going to put my centres in, spent most of yesterday striping tyres and knocking out rivets, theres a few thin areas ill need to weld in some new steel but i should end up with a usable set of 4 rear rims, well thats the plan and then i can bring the truck home and get it under cover before winter sets in

    cheers mike

  10. Thought id try to get one of the other clutches apart, (a worse looking one!) and low and behold this time success

the thread looks a bit more on the fine side, you can see on the back of the the plate where the waters accumulated but luckily on this one the threaded areas stayed slightly oily still had to use a bit of heat,

now things are moving forward again, these white clutches are very well made and for a 30 h/p engine seem a little over engineered - in my opinion

  11. Well ive being trying to get the adjustable clutch plate out of the back piece of the flywheel with no luck

i tried a big propane torch to heat  it up, then next i had a big burn off of old pallets at my work so i put it in the fire, still no movement!

i have now decided to give it a 3 or 4 month molasses bath and see if that does anything? I have had some success with other rusty parts so we will see, still very frustrating to say the least, theres just not enough to hold onto to put any pressure on the plate!

  12. Had a bit of progress recently with the packard, ive tracked down the original engine which was sold to a museum some 20 plus years ago

unfortunately the engine has been striped of most its bolt on components like manifolds, valve covers, fan assembly, waterpump, etc but it is the original engine so im trying to purchase it, i do have a complete engine so thats one big part covered!

ive also i/d the packard truck as a model D 4 ton size, model D were only made for 1 year (1915-16) and had a 3 speed trans instead of a 4 speed used in the more common model E of the similar size 3 or 4 ton truck

another feature for the model D is the gearchange was mounted to the outside of the frame whereas model E’s had the gearstick behind the engine in the more conventional position, pictures of the engine below

i now need to find the correct 3 speed trans, im going to need a lot more luck to pull that off i reckon, but you never know? whats in peoples sheds?

  13. Dave Pictures of the nos muffler apart

it is pressed sections each with a rib inside and two baffles, simple but if you had to recreate these days it would cost you a fortune?

most of my english trucks mufflers built upto the early 20’s had cast ends with one or two rods going through a plain tube and a seperate baffle section inside that the rods passed through like this one

  14. Hi greg

yeh its a real shame for sure but that little white i got was shipped here by a south island farmer as all he wanted was the old marine engine, i only paid a grand for it, so to me its worth my time and effort to find the rest

over the years ive learnt to buy it when you see it with old truck stuff especially mechanical stuff, but the downside to this is my sheds are never big enough and i need more!

greg im still planning on getting that truck of you maybe later this year?

these white parts im sending to Virginia to go with my Liberty stuff end of your summer

ed ill send photos of the original muffler ends once i get my hands on it

i do have an old nos muffler similar i got a few years back, i will post a pic of that and the one that came with the 3 ton white chaindrive truck if that helps?

    mike

  15. Hi dave sorry mate im taking the muffler as i need one too even though its only good for a patern, but id be happy to have the endplates recast for you dave, send me a pm with your details and i will see what i can do,

it does seem a shame to cut the frame up but its all going towards helping me with mine and the pedals and clutch actuating shaft and engine mounts were sold to a good friend in chicago who has a white which when he bought it came with a ford model a engine in it, hes just bought a white engine and needed the pedals and clutch set up and engine mounts to put his white back to something more original? So this frame is helping to restore 2 white trucks

yeh ed going by the 3 pronged steering wheel it does look more early to mid teens ?, i was very lucky that this white frame was only a  1/2 hr drive from my mates place north of spokane and hes done all the legwork for me, im really happy to get all the bed hardware and rear fenders too

  16. Got some pictures of the frame i bought in spokane, its similar to mine but its slightly longer i reckon just looking at the section between the rear running board brkts and front rear spring hanger mounts,

its also got the curved dumb iron rearends of the frame like the front

not sure if mine was like that?  as whats there on mine looks original and is only 2” deep at the end of my frame,

another small bonus is i got rear fenders too and the bed on the back of this white has real neat side brackets and hardware on the tailgate

    all good to have

  17. Well im still battling with the clutch plate, i made up a lever in the form of a piece of heavy angle iron with two studs welded through to fit into the holes on the plate,  the plate has been soaking in diesel for a few weeks, still wouldnt budge, so i tried tapping all around with a small hammer and then tried heat again but to no avail !

back to soaking in diesel, if it doesnt come free in a couple more weeks i think i will put it in my molasses bath,

i think theres around 1/2” to 3/4” of thread around the outside edge of the plate and that sure is a lot of surface area for rust to hold onto??

i have 2 spare clutches but they are way rustier and look like they came out of the titanic!!!
ive added a few more ‘non progress’

    pictures of the clutch

one other bit of good news is ive found a set of wooden wheels on a white frame similar to mine, i actually have bought the whole frame which had no rad or engine, a good friend  is picking it up tommorow and is going to remove all the parts i want and crate them up, so i suppose its sort of progress?

    Cheers mike

  18. Ed the clutch release collar wound of to the left, just like a standard nut and bolt, i ended up using a punch to gently tap it around by the two holes on the side of the collar, once it had done a couple of revolutions it could  be wound of by hand,  but i did heat it up

i suspect the plate in the flywheel half is going to be a tough bugger to get out?? We will see
