  1. Danny, no timing hole cover, didn't know there was such a thing, how does it attach?
  2. The engine is in! The front end didn't budge, man those springs are tight!
  3. My wife and I laughed at the "oftener" too, nobody says that, al least nobody with any schooling On the other hand, we do use jeez Louise all the time I suppose #2 is correct for me since mine doesn't actually have the bath.
  4. Grant, Mike, Danny, anyone Does anyone know exactly which decal goes on the air cleaner for my car? I see a few sites with different ones, for some reason the last one seems correct, (and (edit) now I see Grant used the first one, so that must be correct) Also, should there be a decal on the oil cap?
  5. the steering wheel is worth something too if you have the ability, you'd make way more parting it out
  6. Anyone know what color the plug wires should be for this? Gold or black? Thanks!
  7. I am fairly certain the lettering in the stainless trim on a 1939 should be black, not sure if that helps at all. Not sure about the rest of the recessed area other than the letters. I am also interested in this information.
  8. here's part of mine unrestored, when they're done, I hope they'll look like yours Grant!
  9. after looking mine has been bored .30 anyway, oh well, we tried anyway
  10. I'd send it no problem if we can determine if it works. anybody out there know if they would fit?
  11. Would they be the same rings as I have on my 1939 248? I have all my old rings from my rebuild.
  12. The chrome strip comes off with a little help from a flat screwdriver. I see them on eBay from time to time. Here are a couple, though they are extremely overpriced. I know I've seen them in the $25-$50 range before: 1939 1940 Buick Trim Piece for Cowl between Hood & Door | eBay 1939 Buick Cowl Trim Strips; Pr.! | eBay I'm not sure about the door catch part.
  13. Thanks Ben! Mike, I have no idea. It did not run when I got it. Thanks for those tips! I was under the assumption it needed to be overhauled, but maybe not. Any other opinions/advice out there?
  14. We're down to the last 2 "big" items on the engine, the oil pump and the head. As far as the oil pump, I was hoping to get some input as to whether a kit like this: Oil pump repair kit Buick 248 1939 1940 1941 1942 | eBay for about $82 is good, or would it be worth the extra money to get a rebuilt one from somewhere like Bob's? By the time I ship the core and all, it's about $55 more for the rebuilt one vs. the kit.
  15. I'm keeping the 6V, that part of what makes older cars neat. 6V can be very reliable, your headlights won't be as bright, but I'm never going to be out driving mine at night anyway
  16. Thanks Danny and Ben! Matt, well, you can see we used uni-strut for the materials, which is incredibly strong. We weren't even going to put the braces on the bottom at first, but we had the welder out and had the material. That was probably a good idea. It seems to be holding up fine.
  17. Thanks! Any idea what goes in these 3 holes? It looks like a square headed plug was in the bottom one in a before pic, but the other 2 looked empty. Are they supposed to be?
  18. nice! My favorite color! I've been told the engines can last 100,000+ miles. I know mine had been rebuilt once before we had it done recently. Average mileage seems to be all over the place.
  19. I have seem a few different "photos" in different manuals with them hanging down, although, like Danny said, it wouldn't contact the camshaft that way. I think the bigger 39's with the big engine did point down? Bob told me that, like a lot of things, this pump is a one year wonder. I really love learning about this stuff as I move along.
  20. That's interesting, that pump must be very similar to an original because the rebuild kit for an original one from Bob's worked...??? I will keep that in mind. We did find that it has been changed at least once because we found an old part of one in the oil pan, the arm that rides on the cam was laying in there, must have broken off. Is the one on there a vintage replacement?
