  1. Car will easily drive 8o - 85 MPH and more all day long
  2. Took the 560SL to our monthly Ct. Cafe Racers lunch in Southport Ct. yesterday. 50 miles roundtrip. Car ran great. Picked up Automotive Hall of Famer Judy Stropus for the drive there and back in Ridgefield Ct. Top down both ways. A little cool on the way there, but warm and spectacular on the ride home, all back roads of course. Hit 23,000 miles on the drive back home. Lots of compliments for the car. Always a fun time with a great bunch of friends and cars.
  3. Thanks. Will look it up and ask. Transmission, all couplings and rear end, etc checked and replaced what was needed. The car had his total attention for 3 full days of work. Great Mercedes mechanic.
  4. Some photos of having the car gone through at a well known Mercedes shop for its first go through since purchasing the car. Mechanic was very impressed. Said it is definitly a all original 22,000 mile car. There is not one score mark or anything on the camshaft when he took the valve covers off to put new gaskets in. Thanks Steve Mack for the tips. The upper tensioner and guides were fine. Steering box was also good. bushing rubbers were torn, but OK. Replaced them anyway. Found some mouse residue, some in intake and evidence of some chewing on hoses, all cleaned up and replaced. Fluids all changed, camshaft oilers, fuel lines done, etc. . Brakes are good and original so no need for anything now. Car runs great. $900 in parts. Labor cost was reasonable for a mercedes tech.
  5. Steve, Thanks for the tips. They are all now on my list for Tuesday.
  6. Thanks! Car is going for it's first full service in Ossining NY Tuesday, will be going through everything. The Upper Timing Chain Guides and Tensioners are on the top of the list. I look forward to whatever info you can send. Hope you had a wonderful Vacation.
  7. He was a good man and he is missed. It was an honor to be a friend and a fellow Madison Avenue Sports Car Driving and Chowder Society member. He is missed and I mention him and others who are no longer with us in a little toast I give at Sardi's every Christmas meeting. Happy Birthday in heaven, Austie!
  8. Thanks Steve_Mack_Ct for the advice. These cars are new to me. Have some friends in the MBCA and one who collects a lot of these. I am a member of the MBCA and the Westchester/Ct MBCA Section. Do you know Ann Fagan? PM sent.
  9. Bought this beauty about 9 days ago. Towed it home from Delaware August 5th. All original except tires, hoses? and belts? 1988 560 SL with 22,633 miles when it got to my home. Very, Very clean. Not perfect, but no car is. Looking forward to using it with my wife for AACA and other tours, and nice top up or down (Hardtop or not) weather drives. Hope to start showing it in HPOF next year. A few photos attached.
  10. Will drop by this week on our trip to the Lancaster area. Looking forward to seeing my grandsons reaction.
  11. Got home from the GSCA Nationals in Bowling Green Kentucky Monday. Had a great big smile on my face when I saw Crankshaft #6 waiting for me and the latest AACA Magazine also. Looking forward to that, then Linkage magazine came yesterday. When it rains it pours! 😎
  12. My son in Law works in a top tier upholstery shop for his cousin in Tuckahoe, NY, about 25 miles north of NYC. (Westchester County). Learned the trade from his Old school German Craftsman Uncle who just recently passed away who used to own the shop. He is meticulous and his work with convertible tops and upholstery is 2nd to none. They do lots of work for high end car dealers and lots of car show guys domestic and foreign. The are usually very reasonably priced. They are real car guys. The name of the place is Automotive Upholstery & Convertible Top. 914-961-4242
  13. Top photo speaks for itself. 2nd photo was from the 2022 AACA Grand National Meet in Virginia Beach where it won its Senior Grand National Award.
  14. Exactly what I was thinking and we are less than halfway through the thread. Thank you all for the education on these cars and looking forward to reading the rest of this thread. Brings me back to seeing some really old cars getting restored back in the day when I was very young, I didn't really get it appreciate and fully understand what I was seeing in person. Live and learn. Was too preoccupied later with post and some pre war sports cars, Racing cars and modern for the day muscle. Really thanks again. So much to learn with so little time to try to digest fully. I can now see how this would/could take a lifetime. All the many automotive books I have still do not compare to what I learn in this forum. This may sound silly, but I love this forum and AACA.
  15. My Edition1 GTs next to the Gullwing from your photo last year at Caffeine and Carburetors in New Canaan Ct. Great car and owner. Mechanically done with original paint, interior, etc
  16. Congrats Ed. The owners looked pleased. Best in Class. Well deserved. She cleaned up nicely. 😎
  17. That is a 1980 Buick Century. 3.6 litre 231 V6. Three speed manual Trans. Make no mistake that car is exactly where it should be. Owned by Nicola Bulgari and it is from his "NB Center for American Automotive Heritage". Wonderful Museum and owner. A must go to place if you appreciate American Automotive history. I forgot and put in my application too late for the Buick class.
  18. Driving a Model T is on my bucket list. Need to find the time to do so. I know a museum that will remain nameless that offers that opportunity. 😎
  19. Thanks for the tour, Ed. A very special collection from what you have shown. Walt G. As a 24 year old when I was first invited to be a Madison Avenue Sports Car Driving and Chowder Society Not only Vice President back in the day, I cherished my time spent with "Austie" I am this year a 40 year Chowder member. He and his cars were amazing and his knowledge and memory was everything I read about in my vintage automobile books and more, but in person. He was a truly exceptional inimitable man. He is sorely missed. At the Chowder Christmas party this year I had the honor to gave a little speech from the podium to celebrate my 40 years and to toast him and of course Luigi, Vincent Sardi, and named/included many of the many other great people for the newbies and more that were members over these past 40 years who are no longer with us. Excuse me, Ed as I rambled a little off topic just now. Back to the the original post after a few CC's of course.
  20. Wow some great and beautiful cars in this thread. Thanks for showing them.
