  1. Your goal is simply to see if the gauge works? I would set a battery on my work bench. Two "jumpers, with alligator clips if available, wire with bare ends if not. ANYTHING to create a draw. Motor, fan [motor], head lamp, or other lamp with enough "draw" to read. Connect a jumper to each battery post. Connect either one to one post on the gauge. Connect one jumper to the other post on the gauge, connect the other end of THIS jumper to the head lamp. Connect the jumper from the other battery post to the other terminal on the Lamp [ motor],. Gauge will show either a draw or charge, Switch leads at the battery to check for opposite reading. I THINK. As old-tank says, check back. Ben
  2. Probably! Too danged old and fat to change?πŸ˜†. Ben
  3. Sure was!! Did not even realize I was doing so!😁 Ben
  4. In 70 years of driving, I have never torqued a wheel lug! Wow, look at ALL those times I was in danger.πŸ˜‰ Ben
  5. πŸ˜„. No, no. That WOULD have been something. I was inspired by the picture Crusty Trucker posted. We were crowed, though. The last such, I was 15 and Carl, the 7th was an infant. Smaller ones on somebody's lap! Ben
  6. I agree, Bob. Not as many "converted" as you. Actually, only one. 12+ years and 25,000+miles. BUT everything I have owned as a "daily" since the ' 71 Buick wagon in 1980 has been ELECTRONIC. Never a problem. Not sure if 1971 came electronic but the one I owned had electronic when I bought it. Ben
  7. Well, IF nothing missing and YOU installed it right, it must be RIGHT! Right?😁 Ben
  8. Do you have a genuine Oldsmobile Shop Manual? If it is like the 1950 Buick shop manual, instructions for measuring height, front and back, are included. Ben
  9. I resemble that remark!😁 Some folks just need more "trunk". If we, Mom, Dad and seven at the time, went on a trip, the trunk was FULL. Looking back, I am sure they wished for extra sometimes. Mullins trailers, anyone? Ben
  10. Lou, that is exorbitant in my opinion. Can you do it yourself? What year? Kanter has complete kits for $2500. Another $1000-$1500 IF machine shop work is needed, depending on where you are. What indicates you may be needing a rebuild? Ben
  11. I expect those "studs" are locating pins, with a snug [ machined ?] fit. Ben
  12. Inside, what I described is a basic! The engine will run near perfect . NOW, tweaking time. First. a disclaimer. I KNOW, OR REMEMBER, LITTLE ABOUT THOSE ENGINES. The distributor rotates different on different engines. For instance, on straight eight Buicks it rotates counter clockwise. SO , turning the distributor CLOCKWIES advances the time. After adjusting for maximum vacuum, try advancing the timing slightly! Moving the distributor housing maybe 1/8th inch. Lock it down and go for a drive. Better? Worse? Only YOU can tell. If better and no "pinging" when accelerating, you have gained. If pinging, a sound that sound not unlike a woodpecker, reverse the last adjustment slightly. Drive again. Make these adjustments until you are satisfied. Or just plain say to heck with it , that is good. You are not going to hurt the engine with adjustments. If the timing is to fast, causing pinging, which is the spark firing too soon, long term, damage may/will occur. If pinging does happen, come of the throttle. It goes away. Ben
  13. Assuming no vacuum leaks, timing with vacuum is a snap. Connect the vacuum gauge to an intake manifold source. Twist the distributor until the most vacuum is found. This will be close. Probably for what you are using it for it will be great. Ben
  14. Shouldn't make a difference since it is on the bottom, I believe. The top is where the alignment adjustments are done. Ben
