Jim very generously offered to make the 90 minute drive to where the car actually is in rural Nebraska but I decided to pass on it because it's more of a project than I'm looking for. The seller said the lights work as do the wipers and fan for the heater. The horn and turn signals don't work and there are several wiper marks on the driver's side of the windshield too....

Welcome to the site. Since you asked us to let you know what we think my opinion is you need to remove one zero off your price. For $5k you can buy a car that runs and drives and doesn't need everything including the engine to be reassembled. This '61 Studebaker is for sale now on this site for $5k and it runs and drives. Good luck....

That would be cool. The seller's name is Dave and his number is 402-768-4000. My phone says that's in Hebron so is that closer or farther away from you? I spoke with him yesterday and he said he would get back to me after he checked out a few things to see if everything on the car works and if not what doesn't. I'm not much of a mechanic so if it needs a lot of work I'll pass on it. If you wanted to buy it I wouldn't have a problem with that. He's asking $5k OBO so he may take $4k for it. How far are you from Hebron?

He said it did have OD and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. How hard would that be to fix?

I spoke with the owner today. His father died in 1995 and it has been sitting indoors and it was untouched until 5 years ago. He said his father rebuilt the engine (no, I didn't ask for a receipt. LOL) and it has less than 500 miles on it. He removed and resealed the gas tank and ran new gas lines and said the gas gauge works. He's going to check on a few things like the heater, wipers, horn, lights, etc. and get back to me. He said it has no rust and it's a good 20 footer. He replaced the master cylinder but said the brakes need to be adjusted. The dash is cracked and the driver's side of the front seat is torn. Overall it seems like a decent car for the price since it's a red 2 door hardtop with the V8....

Part of the reason I decided against an XLR is that it needs over 7' of overhead clearance.
No offense but I would take Victoria's '57 retractable over your foreign job any day of the week. As for groceries, shouldn't the passenger seat and floorboard hold several bags of food?

That's a nice looking Handyman. I had one a few years ago with a 327 and 4 speed that was fun to drive but it had some body work that wasn't the greatest....

The Iconic Chevy Bel Air Is Actually A Dud
Here’s a controversial opinion; the iconic Chevy Bel Air is actually one of the worst cars ever made. We’re not talking about every Bel Air made, however, just the 1955-57 model. That’s three years worth of cars Chevy probably wishes didn’t exist!
The problem is there’s nothing original about the Bel Air. Chevrolet took the most generic 1950s car design they could and mass-produced it. Maybe because it had the Chevy logo people thought more highly about it then they should have? On the bright side, the car itself drove fine.

Unless you remove it immediately after shutting off the engine so DON'T DO THAT!

My dad got this pin a few years ago when he belonged to the AACA. Waukegan is the city north of Chicago where I was born and raised. Is it from a car show there where he got third place for one of his cars? Any idea how old it is? Thanks....

I called the 88 year old seller of the '37 Cord (see ad in "Cars For Sale" forum) back this afternoon because I had a few more questions about the car. My first one was did he have the receipt for the $20k engine rebuild that he told me about earlier this week and also the other receipt for the transmission work that he had done in Auburn, IN by a guy in the Cord club. He got upset and told me that his word is good and he's not dishonest and I politely explained that the receipts add to the value of the car so when I decided to sell it I would have proof of the rebuild. He said he looked for them 3-4 years ago and couldn't find them but said he would try again but he was still annoyed with me. He said none of the other callers asked about receipts and insinuated that I was rude by asking for them. I've done this in the past with other old cars and never had anyone get upset. I'm sure that some of you guys have asked for receipts from sellers before. Has anyone ever gotten upset with you for asking?

He texted me a few more pics today so I asked him about the rockers. He said they were replaced but that that was the only rust on the car. He forgot to mention that last night. He also said there was a small tear in the driver's seat which he covered with tape. (Is that going to stop the tear from getting bigger? I doubt it. Don't forget this is Kentucky.) I thought it was only a couple of inches long but I guess not. He also said there's a guy coming to look at it tonight and another guy will come this weekend if the first guy doesn't buy it which he never mentioned last night. So I'm going to pass on it. Thanks for the comments....

In the summer of 1998 when I lived in San Diego I bought a '65 Mustang D code (289-4V) with a 4 speed from a guy about 80 miles away in Orange County. Everything was fine until I was almost home when my left rear wheel and tire came flying off while I was cruising at 70 on the freeway. My first priority was getting the car safely to the shoulder which I did because I didn't even know what happened then. When I got out I looked out into the roadway and there was my tire rolling along in my general direction. (I was on I-805 South on the overpass above I-8 for you SD people.) It rolled onto the shoulder and stopped right behind my car so I thought that that was convenient. Since I didn't have a cell phone (or a jack) I walked about 1/4 mile to a call box and called AAA. While I was walking back to my car I saw a woman standing next to my car crying. When I reached her she shook her jacket and a lot of small pieces of glass came off of it and that's when she said that my tire had hit the windshield of her car. I looked down the road a ways and there was a car on the shoulder which was obviously hers. I apologized profusely and told her that I had just bought the car in Orange County and was driving it home for the first time. I told her that AAA was on the way and I would take care of it. When the guy arrived in his rollback I told him what happened. It turns out that all the lug nuts were loose inside the wheel cover and the holes in the wheel were about twice the normal size so we put on the spare with one lug nut off of each of the other 3 wheels. I then had the guy put her car on his wrecker and we took it to an auto glass place. They ordered a windshield which they said would be there in an hour so I paid for it and gave her the emergency $100 bill that I always carry in my wallet. She had stopped crying by now and was happy with how it worked out so I drove home about 50 mph but the excitement of the new car purchase had definitely worn off. The bottom of the quarter panel was pushed up pretty far from the wheel hitting it so I took it to Earl Scheib and they did a decent job fixing and painting it. Of course I called the seller and told him what happened but he had no interest in reimbursing me for what I spent so I told him to go have sex with himself. So my question to you guys is if you saw some idiot driving down the freeway with a wheel wobbling badly would you try to get his attention to tell him about it? Nobody did that for me but the good news was later that year in November I quit my job as a traffic officer at Lindbergh Field and said adios to California and moved to Louisville and married a woman who I had met in April 1998 on my first computer through a website for The Andy Griffith Show. We were both in our mid 40s at the time and it was the first marriage for each of us and we're still happily married so that's cool. END OF STORY!!!
