  1. The 16 valve sold for $4550 on Ebay. It was clase to my house but it was the wrong color. I am partial to carbernet. Thanks for asking about my electric car project. Something that was near and dear to my heart. Well a funny thing happened on the way to the opera. The state of Illinois is corrupt and can not pay its bills. The state decided to address the issue by not making payments to doctors and school districts. The district I worked for was owed 5 million dollars. They decided to RIF all teachers with less than 4 years of service in the district (non-tenured). The auto shop teacher and I both only had 3 years. We were both let go. This all happened two weeks before I was giong to buy $15,000 on batteries and motor controller. The project was just getting exciting. It did not matter that my Rocket Club completed in the National finals in Washington DC. It did not matter that the kids at the high school (with my financing) were building an electric car. I need not go on because being bitter is self-defeating. I removed all the things I built for the physics department and the auto shop before I left. The only thing I left was the frame of the Maserati that was going to be the electric car. No wheels, no windows, no lights, no mirrors, no interior, no locks, no steering wheel, no engine parts, no axles, and no vin #. I did leave the front windshield. It is a lebaron windshield and I had no place to store it. All the parts stripped from the car are in my garage and shed. I have a complete ginger interior except for the seats. The engine is gone. I have a manual transmission, cables, stick shift and console waiting for another time when I can restart the project. So if anyone has a TC without an engine looking for a home, I am all ears. Currently things are different but good. I am doing project engineering work for the Nestle USA making Laffy Taffy, Crunch, Snow Caps, Baby Ruth, and Butterfingers. I miss the kids, I miss the rocket club and electric car project, but I don’t miss grading papers. I also might just find a TC to drive and enjoy. I still enjoy reading this forum and hearing about fixes for this unique car.

  4. I will be up dating my electric car thread soon with details. I will also make details of the process to a plug in TC to anybody who wants them. I have secured a A520 manual transmission from a 89 Lancer and all the cables and shifter from a member of the SDAC-Chicago group. The electric motor will be a Warp-9. The motor mounting plate to match the A520 to the Warp-9 will run around $900. There are a couple of machine shops that make these. I will probably go with Thundersky Lithium iron phosphate. These batteries are 1/3 the cost of LithiumIon and considerably less volatile. I have also not found a home for the A413 automatic transmission that was removed if anyone is interested. (A413 is locate4d in a suburb just west of Chicago). Lar
  5. I have a spare A/C compressor from my electric TC conversion. I was told there was no freon in the system when it was removed. The engine turned over before the engine was removed. No gas was getting to the engine. No further work was done except removal of parts. I do not know what shipping would be. The compressor is also locked up at school until after the new year. Let me know if you are interested. You can remanufactured find A/C compressors on EBay for $103 shipping out of Texas. Lar
  6. The engine was promised to the autoshop for the labor envolved in removing the internal combustion engine and installing the electric motor. The attached picture is a fabricated motormounting bracket for a plymouth Neon that uses the same motor mounting holes. Most conversions make new brackets and and weld or bolt the mounting bracket in the location that seems the easiiest to construct. For more information got to EV Photo Album: Our Electric Cars on the Web This web site shows cars that have been converted to electric motors and cars in the process of being converted. One of the coolest is a drag racing Datsun called White Zombie. This car can go 0 to 60 in 2.9 seconds. John Wayland's 1972 Datsun 1200 White Zombie
  7. The basic concept to mate the electric motor with the manual transmission is to have a machine shop cut a metal plate with bolt holes to match the pattern on the transmission and the bolt pattern on the electric motor. Any reduction in weight will improve the distance the car can travel on a full charge. For this reason I am planning on removing the seats in favor of lighter seats.
  8. :)These parts are availble from an early 89 2.2 tubo TC to anyone who wants them. Pay shipping and and what ever donation you think is fair to the Morton East High School Electric Car Project and the parts are yours. Our shop space is limited:mad: . What ever is not claimed by Monday Dec 7th will be sold to the junkyard for scrap weight or thrown out. gas tank (fuel pump not working) radiator (from early 89 TC) exhaust system (catalytic convertor) A/C compressor (there was no way to test the compressor because there was no freon in the system when compressor was removed) A/C condenser Oil cooler Exhaust Heat sheilds We are still looking fo a 523 transmission. This blog mentioned that a 90-92 Dodge Shadows with 5spds that would be perfect donors. More pictures and project status will be added to the previous Electric TC Conversion thread Take Care Lar
  9. Let me explain some details of the Electric TC project. More pictures and posts will be added as the project progresses. This project will be worked on by Morton East High School physics and Advanced Auto Shop Students. Part One – Find a Donor Car and Transmission The donor TC will need to be modified from an automatic transmission to a manual transmission (the engine does not need to work or even be in the car). As we all know manual TC's are expensive, few and far between. Hemi has told me about his experience swapping out an automatic for a manual. The electric car would be even a simpler to make this swap because the electric motor controller would take the place of the clutch. The clutch pedal will not have to installed, just the manual transmission. Part one of the project has been completed with much thanks and credit due to the help Hemi Andersen gave me. I emailed him out of the blue this summer a long email describing the electric TC project. I asked him if he thought I was crazy or not. He told me I was not crazy and it sounded like a great project. Donor car located and donor transmission still needs to be located. Part Two - De-Ice the TC My physic students with auto shop students will de-ice the car (remove the Internal Combustion Engine) Basically -- Remove engine, radiator, exhaust, and replace with electric motor controller, 9” electric motor, and 144 (or more) volts worth of batteries. As parts are removed they will be disposed of as scrap or be made available to be reused depending on their condition. I will list parts as they become available PART 2 IS COMPLETED We currently have the engine and automatic transmission removed. The gas tank, radiator and gas lines have been removed. Let me know if anyone is interested in purchasing the gas tank or radiator from an early 89 TC. The TC did not have the wood grained plastic pieces. The auto shop gets the 2.2 turbo engine. The gas pump does not work. The engine would turn before removal but there was no fuel to ignite. The Auto shop Teacher Dale Banfi and I are going to a local transmission shop to see if they can help us locate a 523 transmission. I am also put a listing on the local craigslist (no response yet). This blog ,The Antique Automobile Club of America, TC blog mentioned that a 90-92 Dodge Shadows with 5spds that would be perfect donors. CAR STATUS The engine turned over but no ignition. The fuel pump was not delivering gas to the engine. I was only missing one rear tail light. I have already purchased on ebay. The front lights are all there. I will need to get the TC America plastic covers. All the cars electrical works. Lights go on, windows go up and down, 6 way seats operate in all directions The driver’s side window switch has been with another similar switch that does not quite fit but operates the windows. The switch has an extra on/off switch that cuts power to the back windows so kids don't play with the windows I was told there was a mixture of fluids in the turbo portion of the radiator. The engine portion of the radiator had rather decent looking green antifreeze. The interior is a bit ratty, and the seats leather has hardened. I think I am going to put in racing seats to decrease weight. The seats and their motors will become surplus. The speedometers leather cover is dried up and pulling back. This will need to be redone and the broken speedometer gear will need to be replaced. A mouse ate a one inch hole through the ragtop. I was planning on using that back rack for batteries. There is a local guy that wants to buy the mechanism to use it on a 60’s Corvette that he modifies for a hard top to a ragtop. He already has a TC and said the mechanical aspect of the TC ragtop is perfect for his project. Our tentative time line is to finish the car by Easter time 2010. Part Three - Electric conversion / Rebuild as Electric car Batteries will be located in a few locations, the engine compartment, the spare tire compartment, the rag top storage area and the trunk. All these locations will need to have their volumes documented and analyzed for the best distribution of weight. Insulated battery boxes will need to be built and mounted in the car. (the rag top storage area will be able to be used to sore batteries since we will not have a rag top. The donor car currently does not have a rag top) I am in a local electric car club The Fox Valley Electric Auto Association FVEAA - Fox Valley Electric Auto Association - FVEAA Home I am currently helping a member (actually he is teaching me) convert his 2001 Beetle to electric. His Beetle is now on the road with only a few cosmetic and options to complete. The current batteries available are lead acid and will add about 900 pounds to the vehicle. The next generation batteries, nickel metal hydride, Fireflys, or lithium ion will be lighter and be able to store more energy. Currently these batteries are very expensive and not available to the public. (Toyota Prius uses nickel metal hydride batteries. lace>Toyotalace> will only sell batteries to a Prius owner if they are replacing damaged or failed batteries) You might be asking, why do I want to do this to a TC? Well, for a couple of reasons. One, the Chrysler TC is a cool car. It has style. The members in the The Fox Valley Electric Auto Association have a number of electric vehicles, mostly pick up trucks and economy model cars. There is one member that has an electric Porsche 944 very cool. The TC is even cooler. It would draw attention by itself and then the electric drive system could show off what could be done. Secondly, as a teacher I am always looking for things to hook my kids interests. I showed my kids the movie "Who killed the Electric Car?" last spring and they started to ask about building / converting a car. My rocket club members asked when are we going to start. Not if but when. So I started looking into the electric car project, joined the FVEAA, and started searching the internet for donor cars. A good donor car has a manual transmission, front wheel drive, is not to heavy (2700 -3100 pounds before De-Icing), not to expensive (most cars with a blown engine are inexpensive), and minimal rust. The TC has the right weight characteristics and the manual transmission can be added. Also the TC is way cooler than the typical electric car, a Ford Escort, Dodge Neon or a Saturn. 10. Does anyone have any suggestions for alternate seats. The seats do not have to be 6 way adjustable. I am looking for an alterntive that would give more head room and would weigh less. The leather on my current seats are hard and all cracked. All the motors in the seat work but I would like to sit lower in my TC.

  13. The car is a 1989 Chrysler Maserati TC that does not run. It is located in Los Angles. It will be ready to ship October 3rd or 10th. I will find out this week. Final destination is the High School I work at in Cicero Illinois. I am a High School Physics teacher in a school just west of Chicago. My students and I are going to modify a Chrysler TC by Maserati to an electric car. If you want to know more about the project you can read the forum listed below. http://forums.aaca.org/ubbthreads.php/topics/526616/High_School_Project#Post526616 Contact me if you are interested in transporting the car or know any good transporters. I have listed it on Uship.com and only had a couple if questions. Uship says shipping two cars but the one to chicago is the only one being shipped. http://www.uship.com/shipment/Chrysler-TC-by-Maserati-2-cars-to-ship/179327337/ Thanks, Lar Larry Houle
  14. The attached three photos show the electric bug before completion. The interior is missing and the location of battery storage can be seen under the back seat and in the hatch back area. Both areas had the floor cut out to install insulated battery boxes. The engine compartment before all the wires are have been tucked away. Two red batteries can be seen and below them you can se part of the same color red electric motor that powers the front wheel drive bug. The red balloons were added to each rear spring for added support. I reloaded the pictures. The pictures were to big on my first attempt. I will email the photos full size to any one that wants them. Just message me your email address

  16. Hi David, I am interested in in the convertible roof and interior parts for a high school project am working on if the parts are still available. My posting "High School Project" breifly describes the project. I am a High School Physics teacher working on organizing an electric car conversion. I have located a TC with a blown engine that was soon to be headed to the crusher. It will be shipped from the LA area to the midwest in a couple of weeks. This TC is a Burgendy with ginger interior but missing the convertible top. Your posting lists a few parts the project car is missing, door panels and cloth roof and if I am lucky also the parts you call miscellaneous interior parts will be parts I could use. Thanks Lar
  17. I talked to the owner on the phone. He has owned the car for a month. The interior is rough, He told me that the speedometer is broken, the tach bounces around, drivers side power widows do not work and the widow on the rag top is missing, but the rag top is in good condition otherwise. The price seems reasonable, ( Ebay currently has a triple black TC with a blown engine for $1005) What other areas of the car sholud I ask him about before I fly out there to see the car? Are all these issues fixable or are any of these items deal breakers. Lar
  18. I am looking for a Chrysler TC with a manual trasmission for a high school physics / auto shop project. I am a physics teacher in a high school in Cicero Illinois, just outside of Chicago. The engine does not need to be in working condition. Does anybody have any leads? Could a TC with an automatic transmission be converted to a manual transmission? I saw an automatic Chrysler TC with a blown engine listed on the internet at an inexpensive price. Is swapping an automatic for a manual a difficult job? Thanks, Larry Houle Morton East High School Physics Teacher lhoule@east.jsmorton.org
